This is our monthly pinned space where we loosen the rules a little. Normally, /r/AskLosAngeles is strictly for questions about the Los Angeles area - but here, we make room for more community-oriented stuff.
Such as:
If you've got thoughts about how this subreddit is moderated, or ideas for future pinned threads, drop them here too.
Please see our rules, there are some recent changes. Notably, these rules have been added:
Specify Your Location
No cost to live comfortably questions
Dating posts go to r/LADating
Making friends posts go to r/LAsocial
Generative AI Slop and Spam
Some of these rules are relaxed in this specific "Open Discussion" post so feel free to break rules here if you'd like.
As always: Don't be a jerk.
Have at it, Angelenos.

AskLA is meant to be a place to ask and answer questions about the Los Angeles area. Due to the upcoming primary and general elections, this subreddit has been a frequent place to ask questions of a political nature and while these are legitimate questions about the area, the intention of the posters making these questions have been either to astroturf particular candidates or to sway opinions this close to the poll dates.
As a result, I'd like to discourage standalone threads that are political in nature and would welcome these discussions to be initiated in the monthly pinned "Open Discussion" thread.
This community also relies on user reports so you can report political posts under rule #2, "Posts must be questions about Los Angeles.
Thank you for being a community that moderates itself with the lightest touch.

Anyone know of any affordable boxing, martial arts, or self-defense classes in the DTLA area or somewhere nearby that’s accessible by public transportation?
I’ve been putting this off for a while because of my pride, but the area I live in can get sketchy, and I’d like to learn how to defend myself and be better prepared. I’m a beginner, so any recommendations for affordable places would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi, I was MTP on Sunday and stopped by a booth with rings and didn’t pull the trigger the but regret it. I know he said he had an instagram but i don’t take any pictures so if anyone knows of the vendor who sells handmade silver/gold rings, necklaces etc like the one below in the front area before the food court id love to get his info.
It was a white man with australian or jk accent and an all white booth?

I'll be in LA next week and have a travelling issue: I want to get to forest lawn memorial park in West Griffith Park and will be taking a bus to W. Alameda and Bob Hope SB. Then y can talk south on Bob Hope, past Johnny Carson Park, under the Ventura freeway, but then all the mapping tools I have used show Bob hope dr stopping right before the los Angeles river! Forest lawn is right on the other side of that river, but how do you get across the river?! Is the only way to do that (w/o swimming:) is walking over to W. Olive and crossing over/under Ventura then doubling back on riverside dr to Forest hills? Thanks!

I'm spending this Halloween in LA with my girlfriend for the first time, and as two people who don't drink and party, I'm a little unsure of what to do or where to go.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a fun date on Halloween in LA? We've already ruled out going to the West Hollywood Carnaval.

I feel like this isn’t the right subreddit to post, but I was wondering about how the social life is at the University of La Verne? Is there like parties? How is the vibe in this school? Anything that explains how it is socially is appreciated!

Felt like an amazing place to live and I loved it here. Now it feels like every year gets worse and life is a pale shadow of the good times. Is it just my nostalgia or have things changed?

I’m making ghormeh sabzi tomorrow and asking if there are good Persian markets to get the herbs in WeHo/BH area?
I’ve never made it before but a friend from Iran would make it and I loved it. Got the beef stew meat already.
Thanks!
Edit: I’ve been to the Persian store in SM but would prefer not to drive that far.

We’re located on the border of HLP / Eagle Rock. We just adopted a 3 month old small puppy. When we lived elsewhere and our older dog was a puppy there was a great training/daycare option that took puppies only (small numbers) let the puppies play and also did training. Very different than big drop off for the day places. Is there anything like that in LA or Pasadena? We’d be willing to drive a bit. Thank you in advance!

Need to repeat a lipid panel and my doctor's office has managed to turn it into a whole thing.
They said they sent the order. Quest couldn't find it. Called the office again, they said they'd resend it. Still nothing.
I already know which test I need so I ordered the lipid panel myself through Goodlabs. Just want to get it done and send the results back to my doctor.
Now I'm trying to pick a Quest location that isn't gonna waste half my morning.
I'm in Culver City. Palms, Mar Vista or Santa Monica are all fine.
Anyone have a location they actually like? Mainly looking for somewhere that sticks reasonably close to appointment times and doesn't have a nightmare parking situation.
I can deal with the needle. It's the logistics that are killing me.

I am 28F and I've lived in Brentwood for 1.5 years and my lease is ending and I am changing jobs, my new job is 2x a week in-person at the office in Koreatown. I like Brentwood for its convenience (walking distance to CVS, multiple grocery stores, coffee shops etc) but certainly wish it had more character and the places you can go for food etc weren't all private equity backed chains.
This leads me to my next question, what other neighborhoods am I potentially overlooking or should consider moving to? I have spent time mainly on the West Side, and I like the Montana/ Santa Monica area for it closeness to the beach and there is a lot to do. But I would love to check out other neighborhoods before making my decision on where to move. I want to be able to walk around my neighborhood and close ish to resturants/bars/fun stuff/ - any insight would be really helpful!

Genuine question.
This morning 405 northbound had active street sweeping going on closing a lane creating congestion
Yesterday afternoon 91 heading east, same thing street sweeping closing down a lane creating congestion
I’ve lived in various states where any and all highway work was conducted late nights early mornings.
I’ve seen it done here in LA area as well but street sweeping seems to be done in the middle of the day?
Help me understand, genuinely curious

Hello! I'm planning to attend a concert at Intuit Dome: does anyone know where exactly GA ticket holders are allowed to line up for the early wristband distribution? I don't want to arrive at the wrong location since I'm not familiar with the venue. Thanks in advance!

Hi,
My husband and I are getting some portraits taken this week at the Griffith Observatory. We’ll be dressed up for our photos (I’ll be in a formal dress and my husband in a shirt and tie), so we want to make a date night out of it!
Does anyone have any nice restaurant suggestions that are somewhat within the vicinity of the Observatory? We don’t want to completely break the bank, but we’re not exactly needing budget options either. We’re open to just about any type of cuisine, except I don’t care for sushi.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Wondering if anyone has experience with getting an automatic gate installed in their driveway. Received two quotes so far, each at 10-11k, which seems insane for a simple metal or vinyl gate. Anyone have a recommendation?

I am hoping to hire a local artist to paint or draw something as a Christmas gift. I've never hired anyone for something like this and know almost nothing about art myself, so not totally sure how to go about finding someone.
Anybody got recs for specific artists or how I should go about finding one? Thanks!

Brother and I are going out to the area for a couple days. Primary purpose is to do some shopping in West Hollywood (fragrance shopping) on the first day. Second day we want to drive up to Malibu (reservation at Nobu in the afternoon). Where would be a good place to stay that’s drivable to both of those areas? Originally though Santa Monica but read some threads and now we’re not too sure. TIA

I know groups of school kids often ride together to and from school, but it feels a little different than a standalone trip that isn't frequented by other kids during before or after school hours.
If it's a familiar route, less than 30 minutes, and involves zero to one transfer, what age would you be comfortable letting a child begin to ride the bus alone?
Also, does anyone know if there are legal guidelines for what is allowed or encouraged?

I dropped it in a ballot box in my neighborhood. In years past, I’ve gotten a text within a few days saying that it was being processed.
I know that I voted very early. Does anyone have a sense of when ballot boxes are being emptied for the first time this year?
Obviously I’m concerned considering the enormous stakes, and want to make sure my vote is counted. State web sites don’t seem to have any information on the timing of ballot pick-ups.
Anyone have a sense of what the norm is this year?
Edit: thanks to the comment telling me to check text spam filters. I didn’t know that was a thing, and the response saying my vote had been counted was in there. I appreciate all of you!

Happy Monday everyone. What neighborhood would you dream of living in?
I am not talking about winning a lottery and buying a beachfront Malibu mansion. More down-to-earth, regular folks' life. Where would you move to settle?
I spoke to one of my buddies today, and he told me that Larchmont Village is one of his dream spots for "European living", where you know your barista, your shopkeeper, your baker, etc.
My best friend's mom lives south of 62nd/La Tijera in Old Ladera. Close to everything and still affordable.
I loved Rivera Village when I was visiting.
And I love - no, even LOVE Lakewood. Not on everyone's list. But quite, safe, good schools, and close to LBC.

I’m feeling pretty desperate and could really use practical advice. For people who recently landed a tech job in Los Angeles, what actually worked for you—networking, recruiters, specific job boards, meetups, referrals, or something else? Any leads or suggestions would mean a lot.

Heading to the Fairplex for the Winternationals in February. Looking for a place to stay for 4 nights before the race starts. We have been to Santa Barbara and the Sunset strip. What can you recommend? Thank you in advance and have a wonderful evening.
