Hey everyone! I need some honest feedback regarding fic because I've been building this dystopian Omegaverse world for over a year, and at this point, I think I'm getting in my own way.
I chose Omegaverse because I want to challenge its traditional gender roles and power dynamics rather than reinforce them. My world combines French Revolution-inspired class conflict, Chinese dynasty-inspired aristocracy, warring colonies and wolf packs, and zombie-like creatures called ferals.
The ruling elite claim to be divinely chosen purebloods and maintain a patriarchal system built around controlled reproduction. Meanwhile, male Omegas are treated as inferior, unscented Alphas are considered defective and prone to ferality, and anyone who doesn't fit society's expectations is either exploited or cast out.
The mythology revolves around Ala, Zala, and a sacred White Quarry that both humans and wolves were forbidden to harm. Both sides eventually break the pact out of greed, but the ruling class rewrites history to blame Zala and justify its oppression of Omegas.
My main story follows two characters: an unscented Alpha who infiltrates a colony disguised as an Omega healer to spy on a feared Alpha commander, and the commander himself, who is secretly a male Omega hiding from his own patriarchal family. Meanwhile, the elite are concealing a horrifying secret: one of their own has finally succumbed to ferality, potentially exposing the truth behind their supposed pureblood immunity.
I want to explore their relationship, hidden identities, political conspiracies, and how two people who defy their assigned roles navigate a world built to punish them. The lore is meant to support the story, not become the story itself.
Here's my problem: I've never written a full novel before, and I don't read as much as I'd like to. Most of these ideas come from my own imagination, but I've rewritten my first chapter SIX TIMES and still can't figure out where to begin. Every time I write, the plot gets bigger and more complicated until I freeze.
So, what would you find most interesting in a story like this? The character dynamics, the gender-role subversion, the political intrigue, or the mystery behind the ferals and the mythology?
And for those who've experienced this kind of writing paralysis, how did you finally get out of your own head and start writing?
I'm not looking for validation. I genuinely want to learn how to turn all these ideas into an actual story without drowning in my own worldbuilding. Any advice is appreciated! :'))
