Outside of these mega-threads, we generally do not allow political posts on the main subreddit because they have often declined into unhinged discussions and mud slinging. We do allow general discussions of politics in this thread so long as you remain civil and don't attack someone just for having a different opinion. The moment we see things start to derail, we will step in.
Got something upsetting or overwhelming that you just need to shout out to the world? Want to have a political debate over current events? You can post those thoughts here. There are many real problems that plague the Millennial generation and we want to allow a space for it here while still keeping the angry and divisive posts quarantined to a more concentrated thread rather than taking up the entire front page.

I felt this article SO much. I know the obvious answer to fix these issues NYT is high-lighting is "to get a high paying job" and to "find a lower rent apartment." My apartment is on the very low end of rental prices (very grateful for this) but I truly cannot find a better paying job to save my life. I have 10+ years of experience and I've been skilling up, know how to use AI (feels like a necessary evil for hiring right now), getting new certifications, opening my search, connecting with friends, strangers, friends of friends but it's hard out there when corporations rather pay someone with no skills a fraction of the rate.
I can't even imagine bringing a kid into this. If my partner and I had a kid tomorrow we'd be financially destroyed. I've known for years that our generations purchasing power relative to our salaries is nowhere close to the same as older generations, but I just feel such heavy depression and sadness from it now.
Anyone else feeling the sharp contrast against earlier generations super deeply right now?

I'm 37 kids in discussion are 10 and almost 8. Over the weekend we were talking about influencers and their antics. My 10 yo showed me a video of two guys trying to eat an ice cream cone in 3 bites and tells me she thinks this is why girls live longer. I laughed because all I could think of is what her reaction is going to be when I tell her about Jackass. When I explained it to them they were shocked! They kept saying how dangerous it is to act that way knowing kids are watching. I explained adults didn't care about our safety or mental wellbeing back then like they do now. They were complaining about Halloween specials for kids and how they aren't scary enough so I found Are you Afraid of the Dark and offered to put it on for them. They swore it wouldn't be scary because it's made for kids. I played a random episode and within 10 mins they were begging for me to turn it off. My 8 yo loves folklore and cryptids(he has a stuffed mothman he carries everywhere) he has just discovered creepypastas and was telling me about them and now it's crazy that stuff like that is on the Internet and asked if we had anything scary when I was a kid. I told him yes, we had rotten.com and vaguely told him what was on it. He looked at me shocked and asked me how we were on the dark web and we didn't get arrested.
I have now found it incredibly entertaining to tell my kids what the early 2000s was like because its horrifying to them yet they are equally jealous that they don't get any of the crazy stuff we had because their parents know better.
What's more "lore" I can tell them to freak them out about being a millennial child/teen.

Spent so many road trips listening to this. What a blast from the past. Totally forgot this existed.

Less than half the frosting. This used to be packed full and we'd all use our fingers to clean the rest out 😢
Edit: spelling

It feels like the world has moved on, but I think about her all of the time. I will never purchase another Neutrogena product for the rest of my life

Not sure how many of you can relate, but you were basically seen as a witch back then, and though I have lots of love for the late 90's. If you were a gay dude, it was a scary time. I remember selling my pokemon cards for money to call the youth line from a payphone almost every other day. Though most lgbt people can relate to the good parts of the 90's. I feel we all had a more difficult experience. I remember watching talk shows that demonized people like me. Jerry Springer and Ricky Lake to name a few. To this day Im still afraid to be my self.

All the shit about avocado toast, getting fired at work, and getting participation trophies.
Good times.

This felt extremely nostalgic, a bit cringe, and just made me feel old.

You'd be mid 20s for WW1, late 20s for the Spanish flu pandemic, 39 for the 1929 stock market crash, with the great depression in your 40s, WW2 in your early 50s. And if you made it through all that, you might have lived to see the moon landing.

Seltzer water really fell off, but it was everywhere in the 2010s. I never stopped. Still drinking several cans of Polar a day.

I’ve seen the movie with Gary Oldman about a million times and I also read the book Nancy Spungens’s mother had wrote titled “And I Don’t Want to Live This Life”. I was really into this whole ordeal, and I honestly think Nancy was killed by someone else. They also had money that had been taken after she was stabbed. It was reported that Sid had had so much stuff in his system at the time, that it would have made him borderline comatose. And I fully believe Sid’s mother was the one who gave him the stuff he ultimately OD’d with.
I’m not really into the actual Sex Pistols music, but the real life relationship between Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen was so interesting to me 👀

Are wall calendars going to be a thing of the past? Does anyone here still use them, or does everyone just use their phones? Besides my mom, I don't know anyone else who still uses them, apart from offices and such.

I swear the summer air smelled better back in the 90s as a teenager.
