Discussion Can’t Afford a Home. Can’t Afford a Baby. Can’t Afford Life. This Is 30.

I felt this article SO much. I know the obvious answer to fix these issues NYT is high-lighting is "to get a high paying job" and to "find a lower rent apartment." My apartment is on the very low end of rental prices (very grateful for this) but I truly cannot find a better paying job to save my life. I have 10+ years of experience and I've been skilling up, know how to use AI (feels like a necessary evil for hiring right now), getting new certifications, opening my search, connecting with friends, strangers, friends of friends but it's hard out there when corporations rather pay someone with no skills a fraction of the rate.

I can't even imagine bringing a kid into this. If my partner and I had a kid tomorrow we'd be financially destroyed. I've known for years that our generations purchasing power relative to our salaries is nowhere close to the same as older generations, but I just feel such heavy depression and sadness from it now.

Anyone else feeling the sharp contrast against earlier generations super deeply right now?

Discussion My Gen Alpha kids think my entire childhood was illegal

1.9k Upvotes

I'm 37 kids in discussion are 10 and almost 8. Over the weekend we were talking about influencers and their antics. My 10 yo showed me a video of two guys trying to eat an ice cream cone in 3 bites and tells me she thinks this is why girls live longer. I laughed because all I could think of is what her reaction is going to be when I tell her about Jackass. When I explained it to them they were shocked! They kept saying how dangerous it is to act that way knowing kids are watching. I explained adults didn't care about our safety or mental wellbeing back then like they do now. They were complaining about Halloween specials for kids and how they aren't scary enough so I found Are you Afraid of the Dark and offered to put it on for them. They swore it wouldn't be scary because it's made for kids. I played a random episode and within 10 mins they were begging for me to turn it off. My 8 yo loves folklore and cryptids(he has a stuffed mothman he carries everywhere) he has just discovered creepypastas and was telling me about them and now it's crazy that stuff like that is on the Internet and asked if we had anything scary when I was a kid. I told him yes, we had rotten.com and vaguely told him what was on it. He looked at me shocked and asked me how we were on the dark web and we didn't get arrested.

I have now found it incredibly entertaining to tell my kids what the early 2000s was like because its horrifying to them yet they are equally jealous that they don't get any of the crazy stuff we had because their parents know better.

What's more "lore" I can tell them to freak them out about being a millennial child/teen.

Discussion Growing up gay in the 90's

Not sure how many of you can relate, but you were basically seen as a witch back then, and though I have lots of love for the late 90's. If you were a gay dude, it was a scary time. I remember selling my pokemon cards for money to call the youth line from a payphone almost every other day. Though most lgbt people can relate to the good parts of the 90's. I feel we all had a more difficult experience. I remember watching talk shows that demonized people like me. Jerry Springer and Ricky Lake to name a few. To this day Im still afraid to be my self.

I’ve seen the movie with Gary Oldman about a million times and I also read the book Nancy Spungens’s mother had wrote titled “And I Don’t Want to Live This Life”. I was really into this whole ordeal, and I honestly think Nancy was killed by someone else. They also had money that had been taken after she was stabbed. It was reported that Sid had had so much stuff in his system at the time, that it would have made him borderline comatose. And I fully believe Sid’s mother was the one who gave him the stuff he ultimately OD’d with.

I’m not really into the actual Sex Pistols music, but the real life relationship between Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen was so interesting to me 👀

Are wall calendars going to be a thing of the past? Does anyone here still use them, or does everyone just use their phones? Besides my mom, I don't know anyone else who still uses them, apart from offices and such.

Serious Do you carry any serious guilt from childhood? (I’ll have my experience in the body text)

Do you carry any serious guilt from childhood?

I still think about this time in elementary school when my school bus still quite full of riders pulled up next to a garbage truck in my neighborhood.

All the kids crowded to the windows on the same side as the truck and began to jeer and sneer at the garbage men. Kids were holding their noses, sticking their tongues out, screaming, mocking their smell and their uniforms.

I can’t forget getting a good look at the face of one of the men. He looked like the cowboy from The Big Lebowski. He was stoic and just took it all with a stiff upper lip. I don’t how soon after that happened that I felt guilty of making fun of a hardworking person, but I know to this day I still think about it.

Seltzer water really fell off, but it was everywhere in the 2010s. I never stopped. Still drinking several cans of Polar a day.

Serious 3 years since Matthew Perry died

Post image
• Upvotes

It’s been 3 years since we lost Matthew Perry, and it still hurts knowing that the man who made millions of people laugh is no longer with us.

For so many of us, Matthew wasn’t just an actor. He was Chandler Bing, the sarcastic, awkward, lovable friend who could turn even the most ordinary moment into something hilarious. His jokes, his expressions, his perfectly timed comebacks, and that unforgettable smile made Friends feel like home.

But behind all those laughs was a real person who faced his own struggles, and that makes his legacy even more meaningful. He gave us countless moments of happiness through his work, and even years from now, new generations will discover Chandler Bing and laugh just as hard as we did.

Rewatching Friends will never feel quite the same knowing Matthew is gone, but every time Chandler makes us laugh, a little piece of Matthew lives on.

Nostalgia Is it just me or is pop culture not the same anymore?

I know we're still living in it, but I have trouble thinking about what actually defines this period outside of social media. When thinking of previous decades it seems like each had a unique style. I can picture the colors, interior, fads and youth subcultures that were associated with those times; the last true one imo was the "emo" / "scene" look. You could put on a playlist set to as late as 2009 then already know all the songs compared to today.

Is it there's too much entertainment now, or am I struggling to keep up with what's new?
