I have two major issues with Onsi moves, and it's more of a rant, but maybe I'm just not seeing it
- Trading Risacher
When you’re not a contender, Risacher is exactly the type of player you should be getting, not trading away. I’m not saying he was guaranteed to become a star, but he was a young player with upside who could potentially develop into a useful piece.
How do I know we’re not a contender? We didn’t give up peanuts for Jaylen Brown, and Onsi himself has talked about accumulating assets and how we’re not one player away.
And what did we get in return? A one-year rental on an expiring contract. How valuable was that extra expiring money? We have plenty of flexibilty next summer.
Last offseason, we were told that all that cap space was important because it would give us flexibility. Then we basically signed no one of significance. Maybe we just struck out trying to get Kessler?
At some point, you have to actually trade for great players. KAT or Jokic isn't going to hit free agency and simply choose Atlanta. Those teams will trade players and agents know and direct players where to get traded to.
And Risacher's contract could still have been used in a trade for a real player too, it's not like his deal was 'untradeable'.
I also struggle to see how Dyson and Dort fit together long-term, especially if we're talking about extending Dort at $20 million-plus per year. That's a lot of money for players who should not be playing together. Risacher could play with Dyson. Only other thing I can think is maybe Onsi REALLY believed in Wiggins and wanted to give more PT to him.
- I don't disagree with trading Trae Young, but the timing and return were disappointing.
I can understand the decision to move on from Trae. What I don't understand is why we waited so long and ended up with this return.
The front office knew WAY before the rest of us that they weren't going to offer Trae a four-year, $200 million extension. We didn't know that. They did. So why weren't they exploring the market a year or two earlier?
Could Houston have been interested? Portland? Maybe Milwaukee? I don't know what those teams were willing to offer but the timing for us was definitely not good.
Instead, we ended up with the Kispert contract, which brings me back to Risacher. Maybe that's part of why Risacher was moved in the first place?. If cap flexibility is supposedly so important, why not attach a second-round pick to the Trae deal to avoid taking Kispert back?
So main things:
- I genuinely thought Risacher could develop into a useful player, and I don't understand trading away young upside when we're still building.
- We still need a legitimate 1B offensive engine next to Jalen Johnson. We need someone who can consistently create offense against playoff defenses, and I don't see a player like that become available. KAT isn't going to make us an instant contender.
- If we're really never going to pay the tax, it's going to be impossible to build a contender. We can get KAT at $50M AAV but we'll still be missing a player or two to win title.
I mostly love what Onsi is doing, but I want to see what I'm missing here.
