Discussion Quit complaining

sorry this is a quick rant because it is genuinely so hard to watch this subreddit lose their genuine shit over two losses, yes we lost the last two games, yes it sucks, yes the rockets bodied us, but the rockets are a top five finals contender with multiple proven superstars i don’t get why everyone thinks everything is over when this team is young and still clearly trying to find and identity post Trae, it isn’t easy but we can’t expect this team to win every single night but I have good faith that we will get to the playoffs. Thanks for coming to my ted talk

Unfortunately can’t make it anymore so selling my pair of tickets for the game. Section 116 Row J, the two aisle seats. Photo is from same section last season. Season tickets so you should be able to enter the arena a little early too. Lmk if interested.

Have them listed on Ticketmaster but will sell for less to someone on here. Looking for $250 for the pair

Discussion Kingston doesn’t know how good he already is

He’s absolutely burning NBA players to the spot, and he CAN finish the play, take the jumper, draw the foul. He doesn’t have to be super efficient at this stage, he needs the reps. It’s why he’s out there.

I think he’s genuinely trying not to step on any toes and get his vets the ball. I respect the approach from a personality perspective, it’s good to have a PG who cares.

But watching him burn the Rockets damn near every time he touched the ball, only to dump it off to a flat-footed Landale who can’t explode in those situations, or Dort (if I recall correctly) isn’t really helping. 2nd unit doesn’t have the interior play finishers the 1st unit has, naturally.

He’s gotta take it himself and live with the results. I don’t want him blindly chucking and driving but he’s literally RIGHT at the basket, and the broadcast mentioned several times how they wish he would just take it up. It’s plain to see.

Overall, he’s 19. Game 4 of his career. But I hope someone is in his ear telling him to punch it on the help defense.

Anyone else enjoying the Pistons as a backup team? Seeing JC swatting shots and Red Velvet knocking 'em down is pretty cool. Hoping we don't meet them in the playoffs.

Post-game Takeaways from the Rockets series

Disappointing loss - disappointing because we looked pretty damn good for two and a half quarters. Dort, Kong, Landale, Kingston, and even Jalen in the first half all bad their best game of the season so far, and legit that might've been the best defensive game I've seen from Jalen in his career. Defensive identity *is* infectious. Even CJ was doing his part... I do wonder if something's going on with his minutes though. If it's a deliberate decision to prioritise long term development, I don't hate it... necessarily. He shoulda played more in this game though.

Dyson, NAW and Wiggins have been three of our four best players so far this season, and we lost because none of them showed up.

That, and toughness. It really just comes down to toughness... this Rockets team is legit *and* tough, and we need to match that for the full 48 to reach a ceiling as high as theirs. It's entirely possible.

It was nice to hear Sengun say we're one of the best teams in the league too. He's huge and looks like he's taken a leap. Jalen needs to follow suit now and I like what I've seen so far.

NOW ON THE SUBJECT OF TRAE YOUNG PASSING NATE MCMILLAN FOR ALL TIME ASSISTS, okay I shouldn't have called that guy a pussy but he was being such a weirdo calling me a weirdo and he wasn't the only one, Trae Young is the DEFINITIVE star of this Hawks era until Jalen or whoever takes it further than he did and he was on the team barely nine months ago. Nate McMillan was a bad coach and they may have had beef, to which I say fair enough if you remember him not calling a timeout on multiple 20+ point Miami Heat runs in the playoffs. I'm a weirdo because I was scrolling and saw Trae passed him for an all time stat? Nah. Y'all are weirdos for thinking that's weird, and I shouldn't have to lower myself to that level of stupidity.

Peace and ATL, hoe.

Caw caw!

Game Thread Why Jalen Why

Like damn why is this guy acting like so casual all of the time. Can you please stop slowly dribbling around the top of the key looking to shoulder barge someone and actually just take the ball straight to the front of the rim? Or actually do any kind of move to shake a defender and create space to drive?

This game has fizzled away because our star/leader is indecisive. We keep giving it to him and then he just kind of wanders around half the time and then throws the ball away. Go get fouled jumping UP towards the rim at minimum bro i dont get it when he acts like this

Question Any places that give Hawks discounts for Nov 7?

I have family that will be here from another country and we want to take them to their first basketball game but $140+ for 4 tickets would be tough for me. I didn't know of any cool secrets (like old Publix discounted tickets or the free zoo tickets at the library) that might be out there rather than just buying on Ticketmaster or Stubhub.

Discussion Complain more!

sorry this is a quick rant because it is genuinely so annoying how chill this subreddit is after TWO STRAIGHT LOSSES. Like we should be burning down the town square this is absolutely unacceptable. Honestly it’s so frustrating how few of y’all seem to be genuinely infuriated about the current state of the team. Like we suck. And it infuriates me. The entire fanbase should be complaining so much more after these piss poor losses. TWO IN A ROW! That is absolutely unacceptable. This subreddit honestly just feels way too chill after two straight losses.

Pre-game [Pregame thread] Hawks on the road to face the demon Rockets tonight at 8:30

If I could point to low point co the Trae/ DJM era, I would probably start when DJM smacke the ball off of Jabari smiths head and then we lost the game. Then they got clowned by Jalen green.

Don’t let the final score fool you last game, that was bad hoops. But life is about bouncing back from adversity so let’s see if they come out with better offense and GRAB REBOUNDS. OO is starting to get on fraud watch if he keeps missing.

I believe. Let’s go Hox

Discussion Okongwu’s Early Season Slump & our woes at the 5.

Coming into this season, anyone who remotely pays attention to the Atlanta Hawks knew our Center rotation was the biggest concern. We did nothing to address the position in the off-season, and don‘t seem to have many feasible options for in-season upgrades at this point.

Okongwu has never been an NBA sized center but has repeatedly earned his minutes by making up for it with some great outside shooting.

Thats what makes his slump to start this season off so painful and particularly damaging for us.

Through 4 games, Okongwu (a career 57% FG/ 35% 3PT shooter) is averaging only 9 PPG on 41% FG and and 17.5% 3PT.

He’s also only taken 7 FTA this entire season.

Two of our 4 games so far this season he’s made 0 3PA and taken 0 FTA.

Last year we could count on Okongwu to give us 15 PPG and a stellar 37% from 3.

He looks completely invisible out there to start the season.

Do you guys think this is a slump? Do you think it’s fit issue with Jalen Johnson & Dyson Daniels packing the paint so much?

Onyeka has always helped make up for some of his defensive shortcomings by being a valuable and versatile player on the offensive end of the floor, but without that we look like we’re seriously struggling.

Our defensive woes have us in the bottom 5 as far fouls go, and most of these seem to come from late contests at the rim. So many fouls makes it hard for us to get out in transition on offense which is where this team shines. Our perimeter defense has been good, but passes inside are killing us.

It doesn’t help that Okongwu’s only viable backup in Jock Landale was once again injured against the Orlando Magic to start the season and has been shooting 42% from the floor and 9% from 3.

The offensive & defensive woes of our 5s is killing us heavily so far this season and unless they bounce back in a big way, this team either needs to make some emergency move or face a seriously disappointing outcome.

Trade Talk Early season guys who will be on the block

It's early, but here's some players that will be on the trading block.

Bam - Heat $50M, what will the Hawks give up? McCollum, Okongwu, Kispert and this year's draft pick works. Not sure if it's 'enough'. I'm sure more teams will be suitors for him and price will be higher. I would keep Dyson, Jalen, and NAW obviously but open to packages other than that crew. Bam already has a big money extension locked in.

KAT - Knicks $57M, will probably want extension close to $50 AAV. McCollum, OO, and Kispert can work here, I would not offer a pick in this case. KAT will need extension.

AD - Wizards $58M, will want AT LEAST $50 AAV, personally I would not touch this one given injury history.

Paolo - Magic, just think he'll be on the block but not a fit on the Hawks at all.

Anyone else intriguing? Is Bam good enough to put all those chips on the table? Would we contend with Bam (or even with KAT)?

I'm guessing Bam trade would need 'all our picks and swaps' type of offer which I would not do.

I think we will still need a perimeter creator which I hope is Flemings but that will take 1-2 years to see if it's the case.

Post-game HAWKS LOSE

The Hawks struggle in the second half along with a large lack of paint defense and rebounding. This was a rough one… onto the next one. Go Hawks! Here are my thoughts, let me know yours!

Discussion Its the coaching. Period

I don't know if a team that doesn't target Reed Shepard but we consistently go against the best defensive players.

TWO YEARS, still can't get defensive rebounds. That's with multiple changes and OO or Jock Landale. Jalen Johnson consistently pulls 9+ rebounds down.

If GSW, Cavs, etc can get rebounds, why can't we?

We have an offensive Veteran's coach to work with Trae Young coaching a young Defensive team. Snyder hasn't won a single thing.

Snyder almost ruined ZR and now he's flourishing. ZR is 21 and only getting better. Never pick the coach over the players.

We lack toughness because we are going against coaches that instill the toughness in the players. Even Steve Kerr began the first two hours of EVERY practice on defense.

If we had Ime Udoka, we would be 4-0. We need a good coach!

Discussion Onsi Mistakes?

I have two major issues with Onsi moves, and it's more of a rant, but maybe I'm just not seeing it

  1. Trading Risacher

When you’re not a contender, Risacher is exactly the type of player you should be getting, not trading away. I’m not saying he was guaranteed to become a star, but he was a young player with upside who could potentially develop into a useful piece.

How do I know we’re not a contender? We didn’t give up peanuts for Jaylen Brown, and Onsi himself has talked about accumulating assets and how we’re not one player away.

And what did we get in return? A one-year rental on an expiring contract. How valuable was that extra expiring money? We have plenty of flexibilty next summer.

Last offseason, we were told that all that cap space was important because it would give us flexibility. Then we basically signed no one of significance. Maybe we just struck out trying to get Kessler?

At some point, you have to actually trade for great players. KAT or Jokic isn't going to hit free agency and simply choose Atlanta. Those teams will trade players and agents know and direct players where to get traded to.

And Risacher's contract could still have been used in a trade for a real player too, it's not like his deal was 'untradeable'.

I also struggle to see how Dyson and Dort fit together long-term, especially if we're talking about extending Dort at $20 million-plus per year. That's a lot of money for players who should not be playing together. Risacher could play with Dyson. Only other thing I can think is maybe Onsi REALLY believed in Wiggins and wanted to give more PT to him.

  1. I don't disagree with trading Trae Young, but the timing and return were disappointing.

I can understand the decision to move on from Trae. What I don't understand is why we waited so long and ended up with this return.

The front office knew WAY before the rest of us that they weren't going to offer Trae a four-year, $200 million extension. We didn't know that. They did. So why weren't they exploring the market a year or two earlier?

Could Houston have been interested? Portland? Maybe Milwaukee? I don't know what those teams were willing to offer but the timing for us was definitely not good.

Instead, we ended up with the Kispert contract, which brings me back to Risacher. Maybe that's part of why Risacher was moved in the first place?. If cap flexibility is supposedly so important, why not attach a second-round pick to the Trae deal to avoid taking Kispert back?

So main things:

  1. I genuinely thought Risacher could develop into a useful player, and I don't understand trading away young upside when we're still building.
  2. We still need a legitimate 1B offensive engine next to Jalen Johnson. We need someone who can consistently create offense against playoff defenses, and I don't see a player like that become available. KAT isn't going to make us an instant contender.
  3. If we're really never going to pay the tax, it's going to be impossible to build a contender. We can get KAT at $50M AAV but we'll still be missing a player or two to win title.

I mostly love what Onsi is doing, but I want to see what I'm missing here.

Discussion Cursed franchise

I’ve only been a hawks fan for 10ish years now, loved the Teague milsap horford era but only started really watching with the dark days of Deandre bembry and mike muscala. To this day, I feel like we have always been atrocious in the 3rd quarter. Case in point tonight, we’re playing okay offense and solid defense on a good Houston team on the road, up 6 at half, and genuinely forget how to hoop 3rd quarter. Lazy passes getting picked off at half court, not closing baseline on cuts, letting them keep switching CJ onto the big Goon. Idk ball enough to say Quinn is the problem, and I really feel like he isn’t bc even with McMillan and Lloyd Pierce we blow in the 3rd. At least we don’t play Houston again this year ❤️‍🩹
