Marijuana and dogs

A recent post involved a yorkie that it was suspected had ingested marijuana. My intent isn’t to judge; I just noted a bit of misinformation in the comments.

Canines have a lot more cannabinoid receptors than humans. Even a small amount…flower, edibles, even smoke/vape…can be toxic, especially for small pups.

If you have any suspicion that your pet has been exposed to/ingested any, please treat it as an emergency. Take them to a vet immediately for supportive care. Do not simply hope it’ll “wear off”; don’t consider it amusing. If a vet is completely unavailable, call a pet poison control hotline.

Symptoms can include staggering/loss of coordination, overall trembling and/or head bobbing, salivating, vomiting, loss of bladder/bowel control, stupor or hyperactivity, appearing “high”. It can take a while to kick in; again, if you even think your pet has gotten into any, act quickly, don’t wait for effects to appear.

Be very honest with the vet, even if it’s not legal in your area; all they care about is helping your pet.

Ofc caution should be taken to avoid them accessing it; especially edibles, which can be very appealing.

There’s my little “lecture” for the day :)

Do you guys think she could be a Yorkie? We got her from the shelter and they said she was a Shih Tzu, but I don’t see that at all!

Luca Update! ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

Post image

We just got back from Luca’s nephrology appointment, and the news is encouraging! ❤️ He’s been classified as Stage 1 kidney disease, but his labs look great and his blood pressure is stable. For now, his only treatment is a renal diet.

Thankfully, we caught it early and started his renal food right away. We’ll continue monitoring his labs and follow up in 3–6 months.

While his long-term prognosis depends on how things progress, he’s doing really well right now. With early intervention and continued care, we’re hopeful Luca can enjoy many more happy, healthy years. ❤️🐾

Thank you for all the prayers and good vibes!

We love our brave, little Luca. 💙💙💙

This corner of our neighborhood has become another digging spot for the Tuffster. This time it's ground up leaves and he just loves it. Also look at the all black wooly bear I saw yesterday at the park. As always have a great day and a happy TUFFY TUESDAY!

Advice for nightly awakenings

Post image
56 Upvotes

I recently adopted a 7 year old stray Pearl. I make sure to walk her for 15 minutes before bed. She pees but doesn’t always poop. I let her run free in the uncarpeted areas, but she wakes me up at 3 AM to pee. She also gets excited when she see me in the morning and pees. If I sleep with her on the couch she is fine, but I don’t want to have to sleep on the couch with her and I am afraid she is going to get excited and pee if I allow her in my room and then I am going to have to clean and shampoo the carpet. I am considering putting pee pads all over the apartment, I have done the kitchen so far. Would appreciate any advice on how to make sure we both get some sleep. Pic of Pearl sleeping on me when I took a nap.

Visited Smoky's Memorial ❤️

Took a trip to the midwest with my wife and Kimba. We decided to stop at Smoky's memorial on the way back.

Her flowers had been replaced the same day and one of the caretakers was sitting next to her.

I felt so overwhelmed with emotions seeing her in person. Just knowing that one of the sweetest and bravest dogs was laid to rest here and even in her afterlife is still being taken cared for.

I am so glad that we took Kimba and were able to let him see her in person. If it wasnt for this sub, I would have never found out about her!

Hope you all are having a great week 🫶🏽

Bonus pic of taking Kimba to see the Bean in chicago.

Wagging tails and questions

Post image
74 Upvotes

My girl has been warming up nicely. She used her voice for the first time to get my attention over the weekend and that was amazing.

We’re seeing much less nervousness and more tail wagging and play time with little brother as well. My girl has come a long way in the 3 weeks she’s been home.

Questions:
#1 I noticed she has stitches on her arm in the bath this week. I knew from her paperwork that she was cut by the groomer when she was first found as a stray in May.
Will these stitches come out on their own? Our vet did not mention them at her last checkup and I just noticed them.

#2 She is wholly uninterested in food most days. Some days she will eat and others she won’t. She will go a day or two without eating and only having a drink once or twice. She always has access to water and we feed our other pup twice a day. We offer her food both times and she will sometimes only eat once a day or not at all. Never in the mornings and sometimes in the evenings.

We are still feeding what her foster mom suggested (Heritage farms kibble + wet food and a bit of Dr Marty’s freeze dried raw) and she gobbles it up when she chooses to but it’s very inconsistent and never daily. She has eaten when I’ve hand fed her sometimes as well.

She did have heart worm treatment in July and August before she came home.

She’s still 7 lbs which is about 0.5 lbs more than when she was found in May. Her energy has been up as she is feeling more comfortable here so our vet was not really concerned with her feeding habits right now. I do track her feeds and potty time just to stay informed of her health.

After typing all that I guess I’m really interested to see if anyone had has the same experience with their adopted former stray dog.

You all have been so kind and I thank you all for answering my questions.

Please send good vibes for this little guy tomorrow…🙏❤️‍🩹🐾

I wanted to share a little update on my sweet Luca and ask for some positive thoughts as we head into his first nephrology appointment tomorrow.

Luca was diagnosed with congenital kidney dysplasia in September at just 15 months old. It was heartbreaking news, especially knowing what it could mean for his future.

Since then, we’ve transitioned him to a prescription renal diet and started Azodyl. We recently repeated his bloodwork and urinalysis, and I’m so relieved to share that his kidney values are now stable and within normal range! ❤️ It’s given us some much-needed hope.

Tomorrow, we’re hoping to learn more about his kidney function, prognosis, and what we can do to give him the longest, healthiest life possible.

I know normal labs don’t mean his kidneys are normal, but I’m holding on to every bit of good news.

Please send some good vibes Luca’s way! He’s still just a baby, and I’m hoping we have many wonderful years ahead of us. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

Anyone else having trouble finding sitters for their baby??

Thumbnail gallery
647 Upvotes

I can’t use most sitters bc they’re watching other dogs too, and one rough moment with a big dog could really hurt Pooky. Group walks are out too. So I end up paying more for a solo sitter which gets expensive or scrambling to find someone I know.

Honestly classifying all dogs as just “dogs” doesn’t make sense 😅

Yorkie parents, what do you do when you go out or travel??

She woke up this morning not herself. She ate breakfast and got in my lap to watch Young Sheldon like we always do but she couldn't calm down. Shifting positions every minute and had a constant whine. The vet said it could be a few things. Her cataracts are thicker and she may have lost her sight entirely. She also has dementia so it could be neurological. She also lost 5oz in 4 months.

Also, her last surgically repaired knee failed a while ago. She never really had a problem until yesterday. Walking outside seems difficult. I don't think she recognized us.

We took her home with trazadone. The purpose wasn't to extend her life any longer. I'm hoping once the anxiety is gone she'll recognize us and can enjoy some chicken and chocolate and know we're with her as she leaves.

Last night couldn't be the last time we snuggled because I didn't know it would be the last time. If I knew that ,I would have stayed awake. I should have known something was up. At night she stretches up to my shoulder and I just rub her and tell her she's my best friend and we kiss back and forth and she didn't do that last night.

Getting older isn't fun like you'd think it was with less responsibilities. Maybe a little more money in your pocket but no one tells you that you get to a certain age and everyone and everything that you love just dies.

When she got dementia I was always scared I would accidentally wait too long and she would feel alone and scared. I'm so scared that might have happened. Instead of a minute too early, I might have been a minute too late.

I'm losing my best friend tomorrow. We're not going to see her after tomorrow. I'm afraid if there is something after here, that she'll be scared without us. I'm afraid if there is nothing after this, I'll never see her again. I can't not ever see her again?

She was here. She was so loved. I just want that in the universe one more time.

Thanks for listening.

Class of 2026

Post image

Harper graduated puppy kindergarten! She had so much fun in the classes we are moving on to the next class, which teaches life skills (obedience and commands).

She gained so much confidence in six weeks and made a ton of friends.

She learned a lot and even finally learned 'down' the last week of class. 😁
