I recently went on my first ever safari in South Africa and am having a hard time deciding which pictures I should print out to hang on the wall. Thank you! Hoping to just pick 2-3 images as printing is kind of expensive.

Discussion How do you get past the “beginner look”?

Thumbnail

Hi all,

I’ve been into wildlife for years, but I only recently got into wildlife photography (mostly birds here in the UK). I can see I’m improving, but I’m struggling with the constant feeling of never being satisfied with my photos.

In the field, I often feel like I’ve captured something great. But once I get home and review/edit, the images feel underwhelming. Not bad, but very “beginner”, and I can’t quite figure out what’s missing.

I’m shooting with an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III paired with the Olympus M.Zuiko 100-400mm f/5-6.3 IS, and I edit in Darktable. I know this setup is capable of producing much stronger results, which highlight the issue with my technique and processing rather than the gear itself.

I’d really appreciate some honest feedback. I’m especially trying to understand:

  • What separates a “good beginner shot” from a more polished / impactful one?
  • Is this more of a shooting problem (light, positioning, timing) or an editing problem?
  • Are there specific habits or skills I should focus on to improve faster?
  • When you were at this stage, what helped you level up?

I’ve attach a few of my best shots for context.

I’m not looking for validation, I genuinely want to understand what I’m missing and how to improve.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Lens recommendation for Canon R8

Post image
666 Upvotes

As the title suggests I am interested in a wildlife lens. Yes. I know R8 is not the standard camera for wildlife pics. I know battery will need to be replaced regularly. Camera is substantially smaller than lenses. I also use it for travel and it fits great in my backpack. It is amazing in low light. Most of my shots are typically sunrise or sunset so would like f/4 or better. I think that means RF 100-500 is out. Most of my shots are large animals at long distance. A few ducks or birds in flight.

I am looking at

Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sports — f/4 --- I know earlier models had focusing issues with RF, but with the ability for a software update it has gotten better. This is the direction I am leaning.

Canon EF 200-400 f/4 IS USM 1.4x - intriguing option. At the top of my budget but can be found in the $4k range.

Canon EF 400 f/2.8 IS II --- this is hard to find in the budget. But excellent lighting

I am weary of the Gen 1 telephotos. Since they are not serviceable and hard to find parts. Is this a real concern I should continue?

I think the EF 500 f/4 ii will be hard to find in the price range.

What are your recommendations?

Picture is of a Fox at 10 yards with my R8 and EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS

These are some of my wildlife photos that I've taken over the past few years. Lately I've been thinking that they look unnatural and somewhat "fake". I'm not sure why though. What do you think?

Discussion What do you think about this shot?

If there’s one thing I really struggle with, it’s evaluating my photographs OBJECTIVELY. Yes, I know, art is very subjective, but we can all agree that there are common characteristics that make a photograph appreciable.

To edit a single photo I often spend quite a bit of time, not so much for the process itself but rather because I find myself fixating on details and fixing things that are probably imperceptible. I often alternate between moments where I like the photo and moments where I can’t stand it, especially the heavily edited ones, like this one.

Discussion Imposter syndromes hitting hard

Life's been hitting hard lately. Had a nasty accident at work recently that put me out of commission for a while. My wife also recently left a badly managed corporate job (finally.) So I've been feeling the pressure to try and make some extra cash on the side.

I used to make dice trays, but being down a hand makes that impossible atm. I figured I should go through my photo library again and see what might be worth getting some prints of. Problem is, my brains telling me none of it's worth a damn. I know that it's imposture syndrome mixed with stress and perfectionism, so I'm just trying to remind myself that I do okay work.

Speaking of perfectionism, I've not been out with my camera for a long time as I struggle immensely with getting sharp images. I have a canon r6 with the sigma 150-600 contemporary, and there's some kind of miscommunication with the focusing system. I know I've seen others talk about pulsing with this lens, but what I'm experiencing is that no matter what I do, I only get one *kinda* sharp image out of HUNDREDS of shots.

The shot of the snowy owl on top of a power pole was taken with my parents 7d mkii and it worked perfectly. I'm considering taking some money I got from selling some tools recently and buying a used 7d mkii to solve my sharpness issues for now. Get myself out again and try to enjoy it. Then hopefully save enough to switch systems. I'm so sick of Canons locked down lens lineup.

If anyone's got suggestions on systems throw them out there for me. Also I know this is a ramble and is probably scattered. I'm in a lot of pain right now and meds have been rough, so I'm really trying to distract myself. Anyway, if you read all that thank you. Stay safe out there y'all.

Discussion Let's talk gear! Reviews, questions, etc.

Welcome, /r/wildlifephotography readers!

Equipment is an undeniably important part of wildlife photography, but I've noticed that questions about gear often end up buried by all of the excellent photos that get posted here.

So, I've created this pinned thread as a chance to discuss hardware. There are two main uses that I anticipate, listed in no particular order:

Equipment reviews - What do you shoot with? Do you love it, hate it, or fall somewhere in between? If you want to share your experiences, create a comment and let everyone know what you think. We suggest (but don't require) including photos as well as the prices of your equipment.

Questions Whether you're first starting and are looking to buy a beginner's setup, or just want to know which pro-level lens is best, getting others' opinions can prove valuable. For the best results, include details about what sort of wildlife interests you, as well as your budget.

Feel free to create different top-level comments for each question or review. That helps discussion stay organized.

Discussion Are megapixels the main factor in wildlife?

So I have two camera's, the Canon R7 (32.5mp crop) and a canon R6mkii (24mp full frame) and I've noticed the cheaper R7 does way better for wildlife then my r6 which is almost double in price. I've been looking at upgrades for my R7 and it seems like having a better megapixel count is better thr sensor quality??? Maybe I just have the best model of R7 ever created, lol. but please let me know if you guys noticed similar things.

Discussion Why are people so lazy?

Post image

Watched two teenagers toss trash off the ground at this gator, where it went from trash that could've been cleaned up to trash that will now break down in the pond and inevitably create more micro plastics within an already fragile ecosystem.

Not only that, but the gator immediately swam right up to the dock afterwards, which tells me that it's accustomed to people throwing food at it. So now this behavior has been enabled and could've(and likely will in the future) result in harm to the gator.

This behavior from people is terribly common and extremely disappointing.

Unfortunately I was too far away from the idiot kids to do anything about it, as they were gone when I arrived to the spot.

Discussion Compact Wildlife Camera System

Just got back from an 8 day canoe trip where I did not bring my camera. It sucked but I just couldn’t justify 15-20lbs of gear on a trip where I was doing portages every day let alone trying to keep it all dry but accessible. Is there a camera system that is compact enough to adventure with (without being a PITA), rugged ish, and takes better pictures than an iPhone? I was thinking there has to be some point and shoots that don’t suck. Current camera is a Canon 5D4.

Discussion DESERT wildlife - safari in the Kalahari

To put this into perspective: I have been going to Africa for about 25 years and have been on safari in abour 20 national parks / game reserves across six African countries.

But I can honestly say that the Kalahari hits different! With such a low density and variety of animals, there is no feeling of overwhelm as can happen in other places. On the contrary, you start slowing down, spending a long time at each sighting and honing your skills in finding the small little critters in the absence of big game. And that's when it happens: you fall in love with slow travel and with the hidden beauties of the savanna.

Well, that's at least how it was for me.

Enjoy the pics, I hope you like them! Oh, and I do of course have another , like, 700 million pictures. Check out my profile for more posts :)

Discussion Question about wildlife an birding gear

Post image
102 Upvotes

Hello,

I am an amature photographer and desperately trying to get in wildlife. Now I have a very specific problem.

When I shoot wildlife, I like to use a tripod with a ball head and this creates two issues.

1 - I constantly have to unlock and lock the ball

2 - While I hold it with the ball unlocked I may get some small shakes that ruin the sharpness

My question is:

Is there somesort of a head I can plug on my tipod (Manfrotto Element) that will keep the system in balance without lock an unlock it and also have some sort of a shutter trigger on (preferably by cable to avoid batteries). To shoot while I hold firm?

Or is there any other system widely used from wildlife photographers that i am not aware of it?

I have Sony A6700 shooting with 200-600 Sony or 100-400 Sigma and with a Manfrotto Element tripod

Hi! I started birding in March 2026 and have been really enjoying it so far. I use Lightroom to edit my photos to my liking, but I’d love to improve and feel even more proud of the results.
I’d really appreciate any feedback or constructive criticism, especially on post-processing, composition, or anything else you think I could be doing differently.
Thank you!

Discussion What's the best place for wildlife photography you've ever been to?

Love traveling and researching about places that would offer a chance for some great wildlife photography so I would love to know about this community's favourite places, especially if they are more unknown.

I hadn't travelled nearly as much as many, but decently well, and I would say Bukit Lawang, Sumatra, Indonesia was truly amazing. Finding orangutans, black gibbons, macaques, hornbills, monitor lizards and so on was just pure bliss.

Also one maybe less known location, or maybe doesn't seem that exotic, was Brazos Bend State Park. Finally getting to see alligator as a person from Europe was great but there is so much wildlife there.
