REQUEST r/whatsthisrock is Recruiting New Mods!!!

Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!

Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.

We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.

To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Queue-Clearers: Your primary job will be opening the Mod Queue, reviewing reported comments, and removing non-ID responses or banning spammers cleanly and efficiently.
  • Thoroughness: We need people who actually know our rules (and Reddit Mod Code of Conduct) and enforce them uniformly without getting dragged into emotional arguments with users in modmail.
  • Consistency: You don't need to spend all day on Reddit, but we need active eyes consistently contributing to monitoring the sub.

Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

Thanks for your help keeping our subreddit clean and running smoothly. Rock on!

REQUEST Lake Michigan Rock ID Help

Found this rock on Lake Michigan beach. The host rock appears to be quartz. I feel the reddish areas look more like jasper. I’m very curious about what looks to me like white microbanding and the weird shapes pattern. Is this a fossil soup that has agatized? Appreciate any help in explaining if it’s an agate and why patterns are so odd.

Obtained at a yard sale years ago, no information given. NWI/USA. Large and heavy, white/gray flakes on hand when handled. Initially i thought the red/brown was just dirt/matrix, but those parts have a defined structure and are shiny like a crystal.

These pics are dry, have not gotten it wet. Overhead indoor light, plus phone flash on some pics.

Thanks!

Google images keeps telling me it’s a fossil but not so sure. I just figured it was some type of agate in chert possibly. Already took a dremel to it to smooth it out so I don’t have before pics but the agatized part was already as dramatic before I worked on it. Found on Long Island New York.

REQUEST Green spotted rock found in my aquarium

Found while emptying my aquarium. It could be aquarium gravel but a lot of the mix was collected on an island on Lake Nipissing in North Bay, Ontario. The green looks so out of place but it only seems to be on the surface. It isn't paint or anything, I think?

REQUEST Very lightweight black glassy rock with translucent honey-yellow pieces

I found this rock in my attic, but I don't know where it originally came from. Probably Slovenia.

It's about the size of a fist and surprisingly lightweight, almost like a piece of wood. It has black, glassy-looking areas and translucent yellowish or honey-colored pieces. The rock is quite crumbly, and the white areas visible in the photos are just freshly broken surfaces. Some of the smaller fragments are slightly translucent.

It's an erratic from NY. I think it's granite, but I'm curious if it's a rock type ive never heard of.

It's metallic (metal detector).

This is a black flaky metallic-looking mineralo alongside green garnet (as is hopefully visible in some of the photos) and a white mineral that looks like calcite. Attached is a photo of the streak on the bottom of a ceramic mug. The metallic mineral is extremely delicate and brittle, and will break into shiny, thin sheets at the slightest touch. It has some small rust-colored dots on it as well.

IDENTIFIED Well this was not a geode

Hey yall this is my first Reddit. I’m looking for either a geologist/archeologist that could potentially help me and my dad with some identification before we take this in for any further analysis. My grandfather passed away and left us a stack of “geodes”. We recently opened up this rock and it was almost like it was filled with dry clay material? The innards were very pigmented. We are located in NH but not sure where he collected this from.

REQUEST What is this hot pink rock?

I found this in 2004 at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, though I don’t recall exactly where on base.

A friend who collects rocks had me do some basic testing on it because she wasn’t sure either- she even suspected it was painted or dyed (like aquarium rocks). We scratched it on glass and it scratched the glass with zero damage or change in color to the rock. We then scratched it over a steel file and it scratched the steel file without any damage or color change to the rock. We scratched it on some porcelain and it didn’t seem to leave any streaks/powder. It is not magnetic.

I’m suspecting this could be “Mozarkite” but am not sure… I know it comes in pink but I can’t find a single example of this exact color… or even anything similar. The shades of pink all seem more of the typical pale pinks.

The texture is smooth. It does have some very fine glittery-ness to it (for want of a better term) when under a bright light. The back is white- I wrote on it and blocked out a name for the picture. Back in 2004 I used a pink permanent marker and wrote “X’s MO Rock…” 22 years later and the word “Rock” kinda faded to look more like “Back.” Not sure if that matters.

Any ideas? Is this just an uncommon shade of pink “Mozarkite?” I appreciate any info!

REQUEST Help with mineral/rock Id please!

Found in norcal, on the coast but not on the beach. I was hiking my friends property looking for mushrooms and he happens to have a creek running through his land, very shallow and narrow but still I decided to poke around for anything neat. This is a tip fracture of a much larger stone that was able to get some pieces of. The crystal veins continue throughout the stone and some are quite thick (0.5in). The stone its self seems to be of varying hardness, some of the darker parts polish well, whereas the yellow has hard parts but also very soft crumbly pockets. The creek had lots of jasper agate and chert as well. This was literally less than 1000ft from the beach in the forest, nowhere near the eel river or vanduzen where ive found plenty of rad jaspagate and other stuff, nothing quite like this tho. I would love help id on this please 🙏

Very smooth, lightly pitted, lightweight and found on a beach in RI on the east coast. Is it just a cool rock or something more?

The black mineral comes across as being too brittle to be biotite, and is not flexible whatsoever. There are some rust-colored spots on it.

Bought this rock for a new aquarium setup but had some animal losses after introducing it.

I purchased it in a aquarium store and thought it would be safe for use underwater but now im not so sure anymore.

Could this be a piece of Amazonit? If so it could release lead into my tank which would explain the sudden loss of snails and shrimp.

Thank you!
