I loved this book, the main character was hilarious. I feel like this fits in with weird girl lit. I need to see more people talk about it! Super short read too. It discusses deeper topics and made me think about the privileges I have as an able-bodied person as well. I highly recommend.

Just finished A Good Person. Picked these up at the library, wondering which to read next? Going into them pretty blind!

I can’t put this down. I’ll finish tonight. Talk about a woman who has gone feral. I hate the brother-in-law. Any other takes?

I know they don’t have much in common, but I love Rachel Harrison, Elena Ferrante and Joyce Carol Oates. Could go back to their novels again and again.

Who are your favourite authors?

💬 Hot Take What rating on Goodreads do the books you like tend to have?

If I see a slightly dark, strange book and it is about 3.6 or 3.75 on Goodreads I just know I’m gonna eat it up.

I tend to find myself really disliking some of the most recently published books that are rated more highly, but something in the high 3 stars range is usually going to be good.

What’s weird is some of the books I list below, I gave 3 stars to when I rated them. But I still found them enjoyable to read? (Some of these are weird girl lit some of these are not). I find that a LOT of weird girl lit falls within this range.

Examples (from my most recently read)
-In the Woods by Tana French (3.78)
-The Lamb by Lucy Rose (3.73)
-incidents Around the House (3.54)
-The Lies we Conjure by Sarah Henning (3.63)
-The Astrology House by Carinn Jade (3.47)
-The Last to Leave the Room by Caitlin Starling (3.53)

I know it’s not weird girl lit, but I feel like I’ve seen it mentioned on this sub a few times. I’m really struggling with it and can’t decide if I should DNF or push through.

❓Question Need book rec’s

Hi! I’m a weird gal and I need good book rec’s for someone who doesn’t love reading but wants to get better at it. I read Lena Dunham’s memoir this summer and loved it. It was weird and great. I haven’t read anything since. Please give me rec’s for a beginner trying to become better at reading!

I have 20+ hours of travel ahead of me and would love any weird girl recs for books with Indian or South Asian characters and/or settings! I’ll specifically be in South India :)

🔥 Recommendation A book you think more people should read:

Mine has to be Dora: A Headcase by Lidia Yuknavitch.

Backstory if anyone cares: when I was 19, I was introduced to Chuck Palahniuk's work and became quickly obsessed. I wanted to read what he was reading, which is how I found Clowngirl by Monica Drake, and also how I heard about Dora. I searched high and low for this book for over a decade. I suppose I could have just ordered it on Amazon or looked harder online, but I was determined to find it organically. When I was 30, I found a used copy of it at the bookstore down the street from my house. I had just moved from Colorado to the Seattle area, so it made the find all the more fitting (book is set in Seattle if that was not obvious...). Anyway, it's been a couple of years, and I still think about this book all the time. Will definitely go back for a re-read at some point. Epitome of weird girl lit. Love the mc.

Your turn!! What's a book you want to shout about from the rooftops?

I'm kind of obsessed with Joyce Carol Oates. I've been reading her since last year, I've read 15 of her books so far. I'm excited but also scared to read this one, I've heard it's very good, but very disturbing. Has anyone read this one? No spoilers please.

I didn't think I'd get it in time to read it before book club. Last week there were two holds ahead of me, I don't know why they dropped it but I'm so glad they did. Honestly, I'm not even sure whether this will be my cup of tea, but who knows! Either way, I'm excited to hear what everyone thinks ✨

🔥 Recommendation ‘A Good Person’ similar rec?

I’m typically a thriller/horror reader only but finished this book in one day! I loved the combination of funny/modern problems and being inside this girls brain with fleshed out characters but also the mystery aspect and how fast of a read it was! Total page turner. I’m addicted and need more. Please give me some books that are similar in style

Has anyone else read this yet? I felt like I had my foot on the gas the whole time. Needed to know what happened but so afraid for Tess and her little abomination.

So tender, so gripping, the stakes were insanely high. Can’t stop thinking about it. It’s haunting me. Would love to know your thoughts!!

📚 Discussion Books similar to the movie “Pearl”

Hi guys!

I don’t know if this is the right sub for this but I am looking for a book similar to the movie Pearl with Mia Goth. I love how she takes things to the extreme and how unpredictable she is. I love how we see the relationship with her parents and how trapped she feels by her surroundings. I love how “weird” she is and I would love to read something similar. Thank you <3

📚 Discussion “My Year of Rest and Relaxation” by Ottessa Moshfegh… I need more recommendations

Ok this book is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I enjoyed this book. I read this book a couple of months ago and I keep on thinking back on it-
I will say.. the book can get a bit boring at times? Again, it’s been a while since I’ve read it but I just remember it was a whole lot of the same repetitive actions. “Sleep”, wake up, sleep, wake up… on and on.
Still enjoyed reading 📖

I really like media that has an unhinged female character. Fleabag is a great example.

Books/shows/ movies- literally anything. Can someone give me some recommendations?

Wrapping up October with a weird girl thriller. This is one I’ve wanted to read since its debut but I had too many larger books I wanted to push through first in my TBR. To reach my reading goals during a slump, I save the little bites for when my brain needs a refresh.

I’m going to wrap this in a day and then attempt a horror to round out the month properly. It’s already so perfectly spooky!

ETA:
Completed! Once it became a clear biblical interpretation I couldn’t put it down. Just enough details to pull a vision to mind and have your blood run cold. Enjoyed the surface level symbolism; as someone who has merely sampled religions and read much of the bible, I was able to follow along without too much eye rolling.

📚 Discussion Hated Lapvona but im still curious about ottessa moshfegh

to also be fair i did read lapvona last year (not really read, got about halfway through before realising it took me 10 days to read that much), me and that person have different preferences but as i think about it i still kind of stand by what upset me. but what upset me might not be indicative of the rest of her stuff?

(next paragraph is a needless rant)

I did not like the omniscience* at all, i feel like it just ruined my flow so often and left me not curious about anything happening in the book, i also felt like the prose went against rhythm, but i can see that some of her other work is in first person and i feel like that would work better for what ive seen of her writing? I also just felt like it was boring when everyone was a horrible person, which is weird because i usually like that but they way she did it annoyed me, again i think it was about the omniscience*. And again with the prose i didnt really get to feel disgusted when everything was just told in such a matter of fact way with no further elaboration, people said this book would be smelly but i found myself not really giving into the scenery when everyone was beign too horrible in dull ways. for a quick bit of comparison, i really enjoyed perfume, which is sort of similar with these ridiculous awful characters and this stinky world and sort of aimless plot with a semi-omniscience* structure but i feel like the prose really enriched that world and brought it to life.

I feel like most of my gripes with Lapvona translate to me not thinking the prose fit the setting and disliking the way the omniscience* perspective was handled

but im kind of just sick of seething when i have to see her name, funnily enough i dont want to be a hater with an unpopular opinion, i want to at least see her name and go "oh well i didnt like lapvona but X was fun!". which of her books would you consider to be her strongest and the least like lapvona? or should i just choose peace, give up, and read one of the hundreds of other books im already interested in?

📚 Discussion IRA LEVIN IS A MAN?

I read Rosemary's Baby in middle school and was thinking of getting the book again to read since my father also wanted to revisit an Ira Levin book, The Stepford Wives as it is one of his favourite books. My dad was the one to tell me Ira Levin was a man and I was shocked because this whole time I though he was a she. Rosemary's baby and The Stepford wives are like feminist literature and that is probably why I thought so. Not saying men can't write feminist literature but it was a surprise.

I am a huge fan of Paradise Logic and Big Swiss so this book is right up my alley. To think I was not going to read it initially because I thought it was too serious based off the title and cover alone… 😭

Hope this convinces you a little bit to read it. It’s very real lmao

📚 Discussion Flat Earth, by Anika Jade Levy

Has anyone else read this one? Because I am dying to talk about it, primarily the fact that I hated it and it made me want to throw my Kindle out of a window. It's literally just 208 pages of reactionary, alt-right nonsense in which a 26 year old woman sleeps with older men who make her feel bad, for no other reason than hey, did you know that women secretly like to be made to feel bad by men? Degrade me, daddy! Also, all women actually like doing housework, or more accurately they like knowing that they should be doing the housework and then not doing it, so that men can make them feel bad for not doing it, because degradation is where it's at, baby. Oh, and all of this right-wing, fascist stuff is definitely satire, wink wink, nudge nudge, don't look at it too closely; it's satire!

I swear, the pitching process for this book must have looked like this:

Anika: I have a cool book idea. It's basically Paradise Lost by Sophie Kemp, who is a close personal friend, but without any of the satire or nuance. Also, it's set in New York, which is in many ways the centre of the universe. Can I have a lot of money?

Publisher: Well, what's it about?

Anika: Oh, you know! Stuff! Things! A woman tortured by ennui moving through the centre of the universe - by which I mean the art galleries of Brooklyn - and wearing expensive dresses and thinking reactionary things about patriarchy and how women secretly like it! Sometimes, I'll throw in a line that suggests that this whole complicit-in-patriarchy thing is a product of patriarchy itself, but I won't actually explore that for longer than about half a sentence, and then it'll just be 10 pages of the tortured young woman sleeping with an old man and thinking about how bad it makes her feel, but refusing to make a single decision in her one, precious life, because to do so would be to acknowledge the potential for change, or something. Sometimes, I go on right-wing rants about Catholicism and Calvinism, and most characters have fascist sympathies. The characters who don't have fascist sympathies are awful in myriad other ways that suggest they might be nicer if only they were a bit more fascist. Oh, and in case I didn't mention it before, I'm blonde and thin and I'm affiliated with the Dimes Square crew, which means that I am basically the Voice Of A Generation, so y'know, think about that for a moment before deciding.

Publisher: Sounds fascinating. Here's $100,000.

📚 Discussion Help with my next read

Hi guys,
I am looking for my next book. Just to give you an idea of what I am looking for, I’ve read these books and absolutely loved them: Big Swiss, Boy Parts and My Year of Rest and Relaxation. I’m not exactly sure why I loved these books, but they all have something in common. For example, unreliable narrator, unlikable female protagonist, attractive, toxic, drugs, underlying mental health issues, etc.

Thanks :)

Anyone else that developed a CNC fetish due to reading this series at a impressionable age? I read it at 11 in 1998 and I’m pretty sure it imprinted.

I’m not conflicted about it, just curious if it could have been the catalyst.
