[Discussion] Suggestions for locations for friend's surprise birthday

• Upvotes

It's the birthday of one of my friends, and she's had a really rough few weeks of it. There were 5 or 10 of us planning take her out to bar crawl/catch live music tonight (something she's excited about already, including making new friends through friends of friends), and over the past day or so, everyone has bailed except myself and one other friend. Two questions:

  1. Best bars/live music spots (not looking for a whole concert) to crawl in DC tonight? We know what Google says, and we did some Reddit digging, but it's hard to know the current vibe at some of these.

  2. Any ideas on how to gather more people to surprise her? She's never had a surprise party before (although we know she loves them bc she's happily helped plan them for others), and we were really hoping to get maybe 5-10 people to surprise her at the first spot. We've asked maybe 20 people so far and everyone's said no or flaked :(

Thanks everyone!! <3

[Event] Jingle Ball tickets

Do ticket prices go down closer to the event or is this something that I can expect will sell out? Buying tickets for my niece who wants to go with her friend, but I know nothing about this concert and the tickets on StubHub are sitting at 120-200 right now. Thanks! Basically should I wait or bite the bullet for $110 a pop tickets for her and her friend

[Discussion] blind 26-year-old potentially moving to DC

Hi.

I, 26 and blind, currently live in very rural Alabama and am trying to escape my not good, to say the least, home situation. I know that DC has solid public transit and I have career hopes of getting some kind of entry-level job to start with. Once stable, I plan to go for law school, and then eventually congress.

The place where I've lived my entire life doesn't have any good jobs, much less ones that would hire a blind guy because employers see us as liabilities or problems to be managed.

My plan is to find entry-level jobs, apply under schedule-A, and finally move.

Thoughts?

DC is one of the few places across the country that I can live independently without worrying about having to rely on someone else's car or timeframe. Rural America is depressing if you can't drive yourself.

Thanks for reading my rambling LOL.

[Rant] subletting from my aunt in NW and she’s trying to raise my rent by $500 w/ no notice?? doesn't DC have rent control?

im 18f and moved here from atlanta a few months ago with my kids for my nursing program. we had a voucher in ATL and i didn't realize transferring it to DC would take forever, so i was lowkey panicking trying to find a place before classes started.

my aunt offered to let me sublet her 3bd in woodley park (really nice building with a pool, gym, 24hr concierge) for $2,000/mo. she literally been living with her man at his place full-time for over a year anyway so her apartment was just sitting empty. she has a DCHA voucher that covers the actual rent on the unit (like $5,200), so our agreement was id just zelle her $2,000 on the 1st to help us both out.

yesterday she texts me out of nowhere saying starting next month i need to send $2,500 instead because "everything is going up."

like what is going up?? DCHA pays the rent so her bills here didn't even change, the $2k i give her is already pure profit for an apartment she doesn't even sleep in.

i googled DC tenant laws and isn't a 25% rent hike completely illegal here? especially with less than 30 days notice and nothing in writing? when i told her she can't legally raise my rent by $500 like that, she started tripping and threatened to have the front desk turn off my key fobs.

since they been getting mail here and have 4 months of zelle receipts labeled "rent," don't i legally have tenant rights now? can i report this to OTA to freeze my rent at $2,000 without getting the building's leasing office involved? i cannot afford $2,500 on top of childcare - my childcare not approve by dc and my school fee is so damn high and i just need to stay here till i finish my program..

[Discussion] Heard a show on WAMU at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday October 27th and I can't figure out what it was.

The show was about sleep which I obviously need at this point. But it's driving me crazy that I can't figure out how to see their schedule or find their email address for that matter. I've got some wonderful directions on how to get to their offices but no email addresses, and apparently no detailed schedule.

[Discussion] Sit or stand on the Metro?

Curious if people have a strong preference for sitting or standing on the Metro. I usually prefer standing because the seats never look particularly clean, and I can’t get past the thought of my clothes picking up whatever’s on them.

[Discussion] "Nikola" musical canceled at Arena Stage?

I went to the Arena Stage website today so I could message my friend about seeing Nikola together this autumn. It had completely disappeared from the website! I LOVE Arena Stage so I'm so disappointed about this. It seems very unlike them to just cancel a play and not even acknowledge the cancellation on the website.

[Rant] Please offer your seat to pregnant people on the metro

I am 6 months along and am very visibly pregnant, and every single day that I’ve commuted to work on the metro since my pregnancy has become obvious, I have stood in a crowded car while everyone seated stares at their phone. A few people have even looked up, registered my big belly, and then quickly looked back at their phones.

While I will survive my commute at this stage of pregnancy without sitting down, being pregnant is uncomfortable and it would be so nice if an able bodied person, especially one sitting in a seat reserved for people with disabilities, offered me their seat.

There will come a point when I’m further along in my pregnancy and am less able to stand for long periods, and at that point I’ll have to ask people to let me sit down. It would be so nice if people could just have an ounce of situational awareness so that we can all avoid me having to ask you to move. And for what it’s worth, you’ll look like a hero and put all the other metro riders to shame if you offer a pregnant lady your seat.

(And before anyone says they don’t want to offend a non-pregnant person who might just look pregnant by offering their seat, I promise you: 1) that ain’t me! I look very pregnant, and 2) you don’t have to explicitly reference pregnancy as the reason for your kind gesture.)

[Discussion] Ira J

I know there are a lot of mixed feelings on tiktok about Ira J, but I was curious what the general consensus on here is.
If you’re unaware, Ira J is a man with around 160,000 followers on tiktok, and he frequently posts videos of himself filming random strangers on the street (usually around 14th St and Dupont) and narrating their lives. Part of me finds it amusing, but the other part of me is uncomfortable for the people who have no idea they’re being filmed and broadcasted to almost 200k people.
I’ve actually met Ira in person a couple times out and about when I recognized him and he’s very nice, but I’m still not sure how to feel about the whole filming strangers aspect, even if it’s done in a silly way.
Thoughts? Would love to hear more opinions than just tiktok comments!

I was canvassing for new areas and stumbled across some older stuff again I got a cool bottle, a crucifix, and a lot of other cool stuff not posted. I'm most interested in the crucifix however, being the location where it was found, it would make sense that this crucifix is historical which was found coincided with other elements of historical evidence, including shells and fragments of old glassware pottery etc. Anyways I kinda made it into a necklace now so myeah. Cool stuff i look forward to looking more around there I think theres probably more crucifix's to be found.

Heads-up: possible ICE activity near 5432 Connecticut Ave NW

Posting to warn neighbors: October 27, 2026, I encountered people at 5432 Connecticut Ave NW wearing vests labeled “U.S. Marshals.” The vests looked fake.

I approached them and asked what they were doing there. They identified themselves as marshals, said they were looking for a sex offender, and then left.

A few of us witnesses are concerned this may have been ICE activity. I’m sharing what I personally witnessed so neighbors are aware. Photos of the vehicles are attached.

Stay safe everyone!

[Discussion] Any good doctors in the DMV who will take the time to solve a complex case of sleep apnea and insomnia?

I've been to 36 appointments in the last 3.5 months to treat various aspects of this issue, which includes moderate sleep apnea and losing an hour of sleep on average in the last seven months. This includes ENTs, sleep specialists, psychiatrists, and an endocrinologist. Doctors do not read anything I send them and keep telling me things like "You're stressed" and other generic advice because I'm young, fit, and in law school, so they disbelieve something is seriously wrong with me.

On that note, do any doctors in the DMV actually take substantial time to understand a complex case like mine? I'm tired of shuttling between specialists who are basically incompetent, especially given that I am so tired all the time. I would greatly prefer in-person to telehealth, and I'd like a doctor who actually answers follow-up questions and emails.

[Discussion] Eye Doctor Recs for MedStar Family Choice Enrollees

Coming to the sub because the listed doctors on the MedStar Family Choice and ZocDoc are super limited! Any suggestions, especially for eye doctors in NW are appreciated.

My second question is would it be worth it to get supplemental vision insurance through VSP Vision Care during open enrollment?! Between my very poor vision and previous concerns about developing keratoconus, MedStar’s benefits may not be enough lol.

[Fun!] Turnstile DC Wheatpaste Posters in NW

If you're like me and you weren't able to get a Turnstile DC poster from the store before they sold out, and we're hoping to find one of the ones they use for street promotion, I found some! There are a bunch along Georgia avenue at the Georgia thrift shop off Quackenbos and by the defunct Tomoka coffee shop.

[Rant] DC 311

DC 311 is just about the most useless government service I've ever encountered, and I was a bureaucrat for 25+ years. The routinely close tickets without resolving them or even reading them. I ordered a trash can, paid for it, referenced the payment in the ticket and waited a month just to have someone close it for non-payment. It's just ridiculous.

[Work] Calvert County Commute

Hi,

I recently received a job offer for a position in the Lusby area. I’m pretty unfamiliar with Calvert County or southern MD in general tbh. I have a good amount of friends and family in DC and would really like to live in that area, but I understand that commute would be terrible. Unfortunately the position is in office five days a week.

Does anybody have any recommendations closeish to DC to live in? Maybe Upper Marlboro or eastward even toward Alexandria? I’m in my 20s and not looking to settle down or buy a home. I also understand that the Southeast side of the Anacostia River (both DC and Maryland) isn’t necessarily the best neighborhood.

[Rant] DMV learner permit knowledge test online - just don’t do it

I am one of DC’s adults who can’t drive. To start my learner’s permit process, I selected the DMV’s virtual option for taking the written test needed to get the permit. Wow, sounds convenient!

This system is administered by some terrible outsourced virtual proctoring company where a person watches you the whole time (I get why). The real problem was that the actual test website didn’t load at all in two separate sessions\* I signed up and paid for, and the clueless virtual proctors can’t help solve that issue.

Just save yourself the headache and the $50 fee and go to the DMV to take it in person. Maybe I’ll see you there.
