Is that a reissue? What do you mean you found it? Like you just bought it?

great find! I love that they included that photo of Kurt. 💔

never realized just how disturbed Daniel was until I read this on wikipedia:

In 1990, Johnston played at a music festival in Austin, Texas. On the way back to West Virginia on a private two-seater plane piloted by his father Bill, Johnston had a manic psychotic episode; believing he was Casper the Friendly Ghost, Johnston removed the key from the plane's ignition and threw it outside. His father, a former U.S. Air Force pilot, managed to successfully crash-land the plane, even though "there was nothing down there but trees". Although the plane was destroyed, Johnston and his father emerged with only minor injuries. As a result of this episode, Johnston was involuntarily committed to a mental hospital.

Check out the documentary, "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" if you want to learn more. Its a great movie but pretty sad

You didn’t guess he was insane just by listening to his music?

Daniel Johnston was such a treasure, I just ordered his compilation album after rediscovering my love for him through Richard Linklater films.

I think I first heard about him through the Kurt connection, but it surprised me to learn that Daniel and Linklater had met over five years prior, Daniel even cameos in some of Linklater’s early work. Kathy McCarty’s cover of Living Life in the end credits of Before Sunrise got me right back into Daniel.

You’re right, the music puts a lump in my throat - it’s very human, and exquisitely beautiful in its own way. Can’t wait to get my copy - enjoy yours!

I have the tribute CD double album - it’s great!

I wish that mural still stood on the building he originally painted it on in Austin. The wall still stands but everything around it is long gone. Still cool to see the tribute mural chilling there though.

One of my favorites, a song I wrote about Johnston references "Hey Joe" specifically. Don't have any Johnston vinyl but have this one on tape.

8

u/amccune Jul 09 '26

CD - maybe not. Handwritten cassette? Yeah. That was his main method of distribution at first.
