What would you like to have on your Typhon? Open for any suggestions..
For the past month i have been hacking my Typhon. So far I have done the following:
The stock Typhon stops at A0 (about 27.5 Hz). This change lets the oscillators go about 5 semitones lower, to E0 (about 20.6 Hz). About 20 Hz is roughly the bottom of human hearing, and the analog circuit can't go much lower anyway. On the synth it measured within 2 cents of a true E0. It's useful for very deep sub-bass.
Did you know there are 6 waveshapers hidden in the code that were never exposed? Neither did I...
- 6 – Soft Clip: gentle, warm saturation
- 7 – Cubic: smooth overdrive
- 8 – Tri-Fold: folds the wave back, adds bright harmonics
- 9 – Multifold: folds several times, harsher
- 10 – Sine Fold: rounder, more "musical" folding
- 11 – Sine Wrap: wraps the wave around, metallic
Added 3 FX1 effects:
- Ring mod (12): multiplies your sound by a second tone at the pitch of the note you play. It gives bell-like, metallic, sci-fi tones (Blade Runner inspired)
- Comb filter (13): mixes in a very short delayed copy of the sound, which gives it a resonant pitch. The result sounds hollow, plucked or tube-like, and it's tuned to the note.
- BASS filter (14): a steep low-pass filter (24 dB/octave) that cuts the bright highs and keeps the low end. The GAIN knob sets the cutoff, from about 60 Hz up to about 1,200 Hz. It was built to match a deep-house bass reference.
FX2 is the second effect slot, where the chorus-type effects are. STRINGS is a new type that copies the "ensemble" effect of 1970s string machines. It makes several slightly detuned, moving copies of the sound, so one voice sounds wide and lush, like a string section. It's wider than the stock Ensemble. 5. SysEx clamp fix
SysEx is how presets are sent to and from a computer, for example by the presets tool or the web editor. The stock code assumed FX1 types only went up to a small number. Any higher type got silently reset to 0 when a preset was exported or imported, so a preset using Sine Fold or Ring mod would lose that setting on backup. The fix removes that limit, and types 5–14 now survive backup and restore.
Built a web preset manager that:
has an Editor: change any part of a preset
- Every parameter: oscillators, filter, envelopes, the three modulators, FX1–FX3, and the routing for mod wheel, velocity, aftertouch, key-track and CC2.
- The 32 sequencer steps: note, octave, gate (including rest and tie), and velocity.
- It knows the new effect types from the modified firmware too (the hidden waveshapers, ring mod, comb, BASS, STRINGS).
Hear your changes
- Live CC (on by default): when you move a control in the browser, the app sends that change to the synth straight away, so you hear it while you turn the knob. Press Select on synth first, so that you edit the preset you're hearing.
Play / Stop
- Browser sequencer: the computer plays the preset's steps as MIDI notes and follows the Typhon's step rules.
- Typhon source: the computer sends start, clock and stop, and the synth's own sequencer plays. This needs SYNC set to EXTERNAL and PLAY armed on the synth.
- You can also play notes on your laptop keyboard.

So let me start off saying I already own a Moog grandmother and a sub phatty, a korg microkorg and volca fm, and a Roland vt-4 for hardware.
For soft synths I have komplete 12, so all the NI stuff, plug Pigments and Vital (and dexed).
I have the a49 and maschine mk3 for controllers.
So I’m looking for an analog hardware synth that I can use for pads, anything else that I can play chords with, weird stuff etc. I was leaning towards the TEO-5 after watching a bunch of YouTube videos on it, but I’m not sure if all the love is bought and paid for. Just wanted to see if people here think I’m headed in the right direction. I figured I don’t really need FM or wave table since I have that covered with plugins, but maybe that’s not the case and I should be aiming for something more versatile like the novation peak? Or maybe there is something else I am overlooking?
I’d say the music I am trying to make is most like deadmau5 but I also like NIN/nine inch noise, square pusher, aphex twin, savant, BT, Wolfgang gartner, feed me.
Also as a follow up question, it seems like most of these synths have polyphonic aftertouch which I’ve never had access to before. It seems like something I should get into, but I’ll either need to get the full version of the synth or get the desktop version and a new midi controller. Just wondering what people’s thoughts are on using the TEO-5 or anything else people recommend also as a midi controller for maschine or ableton vs a dedicated midi controller with aftertouch.
I am also thinking about getting some eurorack stuff to go with the grandmother. I think that’s a lower priority but I wouldn’t mind some shout outs for essential modules
(Edit) someone asked about budget, I think my max budget is around novation peak level, but it’s hard to justify that kind of expense when this is still a hobby and I have other also expensive hobbies, so I’m kinda hoping to keep it around $1500 or less

I grew up on his music and he's the reason I have a room full of synths that I don't have the time to make full use of, but can still have a good noodle from time to time.
Been 40 years since I first saw him gig and I've missed a load of the recent ones, but after all this time I'm finally going to meet him.
What should I even say to him?
Anyone else going to this tour?

550 watts for the 210, 440 on the 112, each has a 1 inch "compression driver" (tweeter, horn?)... Clearly knocking off the Fender amp design aesthetic.
The weirdest thing is that they're specifically advertising "zero perceptible latency"... I guess buzzwords sell? because I have never used an amp or PA that had "latency". I have never heard someone complain about amp latency. Just... of all the things you could choose to brag about, one is bringing up an absolute non-issue. Its like selling a car and advertising that the doors never accidentally open on their own while its being driven. Its not something I've heard of happening, and the fact that you draw attention to it makes me worry.

In 1985, German electro-funk trio Collage entered the studio to record their debut LP. At the time, the group had a lot of equipment on their hands. A highlight of the album's sound is the brass section that can be heard throughout. Unfortunately, most of the band members are deceased and no one remaining can recall the name of a specific synthesizer used during the production.
What we know:
Collage was known for experimenting with custom-built sequencers that could trigger their synthesizers -- however, this was during the production of their EP and with a separate producer. The producer for the LP did enhance the basic brass preset heavily and dedicated a lot of time to its presence in the mix.
My immediate thought is that this is one of the lower CS models. I don't have access to those synthesizers and the available online demos do not focus on adjusting oscillators and envelopes to generate this effect. I'd say it's one of the most unique brass sounds I've ever heard on an album. There is a mild phaser effect audible in the synthesizer and this could be an internal function or, more likely, an external unit. In some tracks, a second oscillator is in use and creates a "doubling" octave.
For reference, here are the tracks "Nachtcafe" and "Herzschlag"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8yTxXMkGm4
I hope I have provided the necessary context. If anyone is able to assist, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm hoping someone familiar with the CS models may be able to confirm my suspicions.
Thank you and RIP Katrin, Thomas, and Markus from Collage. Markus, in particular, would've loved that people were talking about the synthesizers from his band. All the technical details. He was quite the personality.

Hey all.
For my band, I use a Fantom 7, with a controller on top. For this specific setup, I usually only use the top keys for organ, and the Fantom for everything else.
Right now, the controller on top I'm using is an MPK261. It's a bit bulky for my use, so I'm considering switching to something ... lighter, smaller, simpler. I also find the spring action a bit ... springy and weird.
What I need (aside from 61 keys), is power (and controls) over USB, simple configs (set it to boot on channel 2), and possibly a couple of control functions like switches. I don't wanna sacrifice weight or size for extra control functions (like faders and mod wheels), though.
And, ofcourse, don't wanna pay for more than what I need. For instance, I don't care about auto mapping or integrations for this board.
I've been looking at M-Audio Keystation, Oxygen, Komplete Kontrol A61, Arturia Keylab Essential 61. The KK S61 looks tempting for studio use, but for budget reasons, I'd stick to the A series if the keybed is nice enough.
Please hit me with recommendations, or if you have any experience with the models I've listed here.
Thanks in advance!

I spent an afternoon building out some shelves for this $50 double keyboard stand that I bought on FBMP. I'm a painter and handyman by trade so the material and hardware were scrap or next to free. I recently bought the Akai MPC 261 also on FBMP for $100. (I never pay full price) Once i got it on the stand I knew i wanted something for my Minilogue right above it. So I made one. The angles were a bit tricky but we got it nailed or rather screwed and glued down. I also needed a permanent home for the Bass Station ii which has a wonderful external input that you can latch open and filter so I added an extra large shelf for an extra noise maker to run through the BSii. Currently it has a Yamaha PSS-460 from 1985 connected to it which sounds absolutely filthy through the BSii. Lofo delight fo sho. Be well everyone. Hope you are having an amazing day.

I bought a Korg minilogue xd a few months ago, and while it is by far the coolest thing I have ever owned, I don’t really play it much. I’ve been trying to learn, but I don’t really care to tweak patches. I want to just sit down, discover sounds, and layer/loop them live into a moody soundtrack or song.
I’m not too interested in making recordings and tweaking in software, I just want a machine that helps me express in real time.
So I’m reconsidering where that $600 could go.
A YouTube comment suggested I focus on groove boxes. I’d likely use that more, but I don’t want to lose the tactile press keys get sound that an analog synth provides. So maybe a mixture would be better?
I almost bought the volka keys in the first place, and with that money saved, I could get a groove box to connect to it. But which do you like for it? Or maybe I’m off base and another option would be better? Open to all suggestions under $600!

hey y’all. I really want to pick up a TEO-5 but since we’re so close to black friday I figure I might as well hold out in hopes of a deal. thing is, I haven’t seen any black friday “deals” worth a shit in what feels like years.
What do you guys think? is it even possible I could find one of these for a couple hundred bucks off? is it even worth waiting? any tips/tricks/strats?

Behringer just shared a GitHub repository for their groovebox. They let the community do the homework regarding the software. The whole thing looking nearly identical to the MPC One.
