Fan Content We Made a Star Wars Spooky One Shot for Halloween! “The Temple of Exar Kun” for your own use.
We wanted to build a one shot for Star Wars 5E since our group loves spooky season! We’ve provided it here for any DMs or players who are looking for something to run and we hope you enjoy it! I’ve also put some GM notes in spoilers after my group ran it.
Access it here! https://docs.google.com/document/d/16-OkvWuBI6zSKEKGWMN_rjeb8adxCXRS/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=108707996945588120544&rtpof=true&sd=true
If you want to listen to some people play it, see some more information at the bottom
The Tomb of Exar Kun
Premise: You’ve been told a sizable treasure trove exists unguarded deep within a long forgotten temple on the jungle world of Yavin IV. Landing a short distance away, you make your way through the harsh flora on a dark and stormy night to the base of an ominous temple within a dark lake. Pay no mind to the rumors that spirits still inhabit the place, there’s money to be made.
Group Size: 5x 6th-level PCs with 3000 credits of equipment
Setting: Agnostic, but Clone Wars fits neatest due to Yavin IV being relatively unknown
Duration of Play: 3-4 hours
If you want to listen: We’re the Star by Star podcast, and we’re an actual play following the New Jedi Order novels. The episode where we play the one shot is live now on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts! Not a plug; but we would love a listen, comments and some feedback on the podcast if that’s up your alley.(a link is here)
Note: Although we’re largely anti-AI as a group, it was used to format the word document so it was somewhat presentable. Happy to provide the original word document if need be for your own editing, because some of my “read aloud” descriptions were truncated.
GM Notes- Spoilers follow
>!Overall, I both pulled some punches early as did my players. I used the adventure day XP guide and set up three encounters of Medium, Medium, and Deadly. We were down a player (so only 4 instead of 5) but I didn’t adjust. My players aren’t super optimizers but they do know their way around the table.
The challenge is level 6 is veryyy swingy. Exar Kun alone can seriously mess them up because they don’t have the HP, or they can burn him down pretty quick because their DPS is high.
Some things I’d change
Area 1- Use the swamp wampas odor effect; I was rolling hot against my players and they weren’t hitting at all so I pulled punches. I wouldn’t a second time.
Area 2- The puzzle here is designed for Roll20 (shout out to the site I googled for a stone puzzle). It needed a bit more work. I used transparent walls for the dynamic lighting when it should have either been physical ruins or an actual shadow wall. The flavor text that CARRIE gives them could’ve been better too. An upgrade of this puzzle I didn’t have time to build but would’ve liked is the Pokémon ice sliding stone puzzle.
Area 3- I liked this area; the players naturally trigged the Tuk’ata attack even despite being warned. It’s an optional encounter and we cut it short due to how long we were going (we’re all old); that’s helpful for if your players screw the pooch. If I’d had a lot more time to prep for this week, I would’ve decorated this room a bit more because the close quarters made for some boring combat.
Area 4- I really like this encounter still; I’d wished that I had built the flavor text to be more… spooky. Like I mentioned above, Exar Kun can be swingy: he almost one shot our one party member on his first turn. They also had the foresight to negate the lair effect and do some heavy damage to him right out of the gate by bringing a thermal detonator. It’s very hard to tell what I’d change here, because I can see this fight absolutely swinging hard with some poor rolls. His ability set suits how he’s described; but I would use his mobility to your advantage. I also added in a legendary resistance to extend the fight a bit more.
Epilogue: we didn’t record it we did discuss it / ad lib it. From the novels, as long as the temple exists, the Spirit can return!<
That’s all! Good hunting and happy Halloween!
