I’m building a mod to make colonies feel alive: tenants with personalities, lots of new dialogue, daily routines, relationships, requests and new mechanics to make it worthwhile to spend time there. It’s vanilla and Frackin’ Universe friendly. This is partly inspired by Necesse, though the current direction is to make it much less about automation and more about the tenants and building a community. As such, I'm looking to figure out what people would be interested in in a mod like this.
What would you want from a colony overhaul? What annoys you most about colonies right now?
pretty sure it was posted on this subreddit, it was pretty small, only a single penguin could fit in there. i currently don't own starbound, so i tried recreating the ship from memory in terraria.
I looked into it, but I can't find a way to do it. I need to download a different mod collection from the workshop, but since everything is just numbers and the collection has hundreds of items, it's an absolute headache to filter what should and what should not be in the folder.
Let me clear this up: I have Starbound both on GOG and on Steam. I want to try another modlist without messing my current saves, so downloading from the workshop and moving the mods to the GOG version is worth a shot. Problem is, clearing the workshop folder completely just doesn't work - steam will download mods I was subscribed to in the past and bloat the filecount.
SteamCMD also doesn't work well because it just downloads directly to the same workshop folder, and only downloads one mod at a time instead of a collection.
Does anyone have a suggestion? I could just back up my saves, but that doesn't solve the problem of swapping between save folders and risking messing up one of them. Clearing the workshop cache seems to be the most straightforward option, I just couldn't figure how to do it.
I'm on linux, so whatever windows solution you want to suggest, it might not work. Please keep that in mind.
Edit: I figured a way to do it. A program called "Streamline" on github works just fine, and has a nice interface to help with everything. I was having issues with it because I'm on CachyOS and something isn't working well in there (it's listed in the github issues) but I figured "WHY NOT RUN THE THING ON MY HOME SERVER???" and I'm finally getting my modlist as intended! There's a windows version too, so unless you're one of the unlucky few that is specifically on the combo of wanting to download a workshop collection while using CachyOS, this works wonders!
I actually bought the game back in 2016, played an hour and called it quits. I finally wanted to give the game a fair shot, so I'm doing a (vanilla) playthrough!
So here's where I am:
First ship upgrade
First tech upgrade (multi jump)
Have 3 MM upgrades (speed, size, and liquids)
About to grab a third crew member (currently have an engineer and a soldier)
Have a farm set up, bookmarked, with a few of everything I've found
I only have one house/tenant set up so far
Just did my first moon for some fuel, and did my first desert planet hoping for an item drop that allows me to build a minifridge (no luck)
Currently looking for an Ocean planet for the main questline and to get some titanium
Am I right where I need to be?
I'm noticing quests seem to be HUGE in this game, as those reward bags have given me the upgrade mods, tech cards, etc.
All of my crew are Floran, would a one-race crew have me miss out on anything?
Should I be working on setting up more tenants?
I am playing survival, so dying definitely hurts, so I feel like I'm cheesing a lot of fights with my sniper rifle that I thankfully found before doing that first artifact quest, is that kind of the norm?
I was rewarded 20 durasteel bars I believe for the artifact quest, anything I should absolutely use them for right now?
Any "I wish I knew"s? Like not selling a particular item, or something you wish you had done much earlier in your playthrough?
I looked through the keybinds, and it doesn't seem like I'm missing an QOL things as the list was insanely short...?
Give me your best advice, I don't care about spoilers. I am playing on a Macbook, so hopefully modding won't be an issue, but I do want to finish a vanilla playthrough first.
i've been thinking of joining an rp server or something just for fun but i went on the starbound server list and there's like one active server, people rarely post theirs on the reddit either. last person to ask something like this didn't even get a single reply out of 22 upvotes
please this game lives rent free in my head always, i need to know if there's anything even left goin on.....
I kinda want to have the main story as an option, not get rid of it or have it be obligatory.
Is there any mod that does that, besides maybe Frackin Universe and Sandbox? I'm not really planning on using either of those two.
I'm coming back to starbound after a long break and I'd like to have some recommendations of yours for a lighter modded starbound experience
In the past I've played FU in the past, along a bunch of their "recommended mods". But I've found the science stuff to be particularly intensive and exhausting. I like crafting and homesteading, but FU is maybe not my flavour.
Since I last played I feel the community and modding has gone and grown beyond what I am able to recognize. Now that I am returning I just want to have chill and well built environment to play, with plenty of content that isn't overwhelming. Also working with OpenStarbound
Ideally, please recommend an already built modpack, but standalone mods or mod lists are also appreciated!
Thank you lots for keeping this wonderful game alive. I appreciate all of you.
I recently started playing Starbound and have become addicted real quick like. I've been religiously using starbounder.org which has been a great resource, but today, I am suddenly blocked by Cloudflare. The block page suggests I email the site owners to resolve this, but I have no idea how to find that out if I can't access the site in the first place. Does anyone have any advice?
EDIT: This is all set now. My apologies for the alarm, and thanks for the answers.
What is great/stands out in your Starbound experience that you enjoy the most?
What could be done better?
And any questions of these nature, I can update the post if people answer things I think are interesting to have as part of this.
I largely ask because I'm considering making a game with heavy inspiration from Starbound, largely what drove me to that was the performance issues and labor issues/bad business practices I won't speak more on so I don't have my post taken down.
Then further driven to this desire because of the death of Terraria: Otherworlds
I want to know what the community feels was done best, where things need improvement or a complete rework, etc.
Truly any general commentary that would be helpful in the design of something new would be appreciated.
Is it possible for someone to develop a ship combat mod in some form for Starbound?
Im not talking about the space dungeons where you need a mech or a vehicle to go through an asteroid field.
Instead I was wondering if it was possible for actual ship combat; factions taking over planets, naval battles in some form between factions, etc.
I feel like someone could make a cool mod involving it but I'm not too sure about the limitations or workarounds.
I know this should have been an update for the game but most if not all development for SB is dead.
What are your guys' thoughts on it?
ALSO if there already is a mod for this concept I just havent seen please let me know!
Hello! I've been trying to unpack the game's files to check some object scan dialogues. I've followed the guide, created my .bat file and all seems to work well, however, when it's time to run the command, it asks me which app to use. which i'm confused? because by what the guide says it shouldn't pull such request and just get right into unpacking, for clarification: the bat file and cmd opens, it runs the command and then requests to select an app.
Any solution to this? Has someone had this happen before? and if so, how did you figure it out?
she wears gray/red armor, has a cape, and a full-face helmet with I think a blue visor. she gave the "butcher, baker, widow-maker" quest before cheerful giraffe. I can't find a pic online and I don't have the mettle to untangle my mods list to figure out which mod broke and keeps crashing my game just for a single screenshot lol
I wanted to play missions with my friends without missing out on key loot so I made this mod.
Every player gets their own items from mission chests, and every mission boss drops a separate loot bag for each player who fought it. There's also a Mission Log that tracks the unique loot from each mission. Normal enemies and chests outside missions work the same as before.
