Sports Clemson blasted for holding football game in aftermath of Helene. University now cancels classes.

I’ve fixed my title and this needs to be said until Clemson admits their mistake and promises to put the local community over sporting events in the future.

As a Clemson graduate I’m not going to be quiet about this. I’m sorry for everyone in the Clemson area for being told that a football game was more important than your survival. I’ve emailed the alumni association and I won’t stop making noise about it until the university admits they were wrong and promises to put the community over their brand and profit. Football is just entertainment and people who live in the Clemson area needed the hotels, emergency services, restaurants, gas, food, cell service, etc that was provided to fans coming to town to party and be entertained on Saturday night. We don’t have our priorities in the right place as a country and we need to wake up.

65,000 people are without power and water in the upstate right now but they’re still having their game tonight and the tailgaters are buying up all the ice. Just unbelievable

Sports Best running / hiking trails in SC?

Hi everyone! I’m moving from Finland🇫🇮 to Thomasville, Georgia soon and I don’t know the area yet. I’m into trail running and would love to find some good places for longer weekend runs but haven’t found any interesting trails from the area.

Does anyone have recommendations for good trails in SC, preferably in the mountains/hills and ideally 10–20+ miles?

I don’t mind driving if it’s worth visiting! Thanks!🙏

Sports For anyone in the Clemson area, Clemson University is having an event at the basketball stadium today 10a-4p with hot showers, free snacks, water, places to charge your phone, etc

EDIT: This event will be held again on Monday, same hours. On campus restaurants may be open as well. Raising Canes, Chick Fil A, etc.

Feel like it’s worth sharing here. There will be showers for both men and women, opportunities to sit down and relax in the AC for as long as you need, free snacks and small food items, water, etc. Free internet is available as well.

sports What is Lindsey Graham’s personal life like?

Ok, I get why most of you are snickering, and I’ll admit I snickered a bit, too. But I am genuinely curious what kind of people like Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott are like? I understand: yes, he is single, has some family, but no publicly acknowledged spouse or children. The men are is wealthy, but not outrageously wealthy like the kind of person who would travel in a bubble ignoring all “regular” people. By nature of their jobs in politics, have to know and see people from all walks of life. Both men are widely known and recognizable.

Do either of them live with anybody? Do they buy their own groceries? Do they have close personal friends? What percent of everyone in their daily orbit are paid to be there? Is they ever fully alone to themselves?

Sports Racquetball

I posted this in the two main Columbia subs, but figured I’d put it in here as well.

I(39M) wrote this as a response to another post, but figured I’d make a separate post dedicated to racquetball:

Yes; it’s a racket sport inside. As much as I love tennis, playing outside in SC in the summer is unbearable unless you go really early or really late lol. Racquetball has air conditioning!

I have extra rackets (4 total) and goggles (only one or two extra, some places require you to wear goggles, others don’t, but in my 20+ years of playing \[off and on\], I’ve been hit in the ear from behind, in the ear directly, in the crotch \[multiple times; gents, I recommend wearing loose shorts, like basketball shorts, rather than running shorts, as the looser fabric can eliminate some of the momentum\], back of the head, practically everywhere, the *worst* was in the eye; if you wear glasses, that’s adequate, just make sure they’re tight enough or you have Croakies) if OP or anyone else wants to play. I love teaching and am currently not in the best shape, so if you’re naturally athletic, you’ll probably be competitive with me after two or three sessions. I’m not a trainer or anything, I just love racquetball and teaching it!

There are courts multiple places in Cola. My favorite are the courts at Crooked Creek Park in Chapin. It’s also the cheapest, IIRC it’s $3 to rent a court (they have two).

Seemingly every other former Müv gyms have one. When it was Müv, it was \~$12 PER PERSON. I can’t remember if they have one or two courts at the Irmo location. I don’t know how much it is since they were bought out.

USC has some but I’m not sure about non students playing.

I learned to play at the YMCA in Greenwood. I’ve played at the YMCA in Baxter Village in Fort Mill/Tega Cay. I’ve also played at Fike at Clemson, at Erskine, and at Lander. A lot of YMCAs have a court, and a lot of colleges/universities. Each place will have its own rules (Lander, for example, used to, and might still, allow non students to use the courts for a small fee).

I know gas is insane right now, but I’d be willing to meet in the middle somewhere if you’re interested!

Please comment or DM if you want to play!

P.S. If you are a woman or stranger averse (completely reasonable in these times), racquetball can be played by two, three, or four players, so you’re more than welcome to bring along a friend (or two or however many, when there are more than four, we just rotate players!). The courts at Crooked Creek Park are in an isolated area of the building, whereas (former) Müv in Irmo is in the middle of the gym and the wall is glass, so it is very visible (you look out on most/all the weight machines from the court).
