πŸ“ Insight The favorite 18 scores of this subreddit

Hello, I decided to count all the entries of the subreddit until today (sorry for the users that didn't get to participate). If you are worried that I miscounted, my method was to register the scores with a python program with a voice command, and then asked 3 AIs to register the composers, then I put everything in excel and made the basic statistics and some corrections.

So let's get to the results.

We have basically a tie in first, second and third place:

Interstellar - 21

The Fellowship of the ring - 20

Star Wars IV - 20

(The very last post added 1 to interstellar)

Then we have the rest

TRON: Legacy - 16

How to train your dragon - 16

Jurassic Park - 15

Blade Runner - 14

Star Wars V - 13

Star Wars III - 12

The Dark Knight - 10

Then we have six scores with 9 votes (they're the rest in the images)

And the last two with 8 votes:

- Star Trek The Motion Picture

- The Good, the bad and the ugly

RANKING SAGAS AND TRILOGIES

  1. Star Wars - 50

  2. The Lord of the Rings - 39

  3. Star Trek - 24

  4. Indiana Jones - 20

  5. Harry Potter - 19

  6. Pirates of the Caribbean - 19

  7. Nolan's Batman trilogy - 16

TOP 10 COMPOSERS

  1. John Williams - 154

  2. Hans Zimmer - 120

  3. James Horner - 49

  4. Jerry Goldsmith - 38

  5. Danny Elfman - 34

  6. Howard Shore - 33

  7. James Newton Howard - 33

  8. Ennio Morricone - 26

  9. John Powell - 23

  10. Michael Giacchino - 22

Most voted videogame:

Skyrim

Most voted TV show (tie):

Doctor Who, Game of thrones

The oldest soundtrack:

Gone with the wind (1939)

The newest soundtrack:

Wildwood (2026)

My conclusions:

This result is very much what we were expecting I think, of course there were only 132 entries so the statistics are very poor but still, it pretty much resembles the popular surveys of the type "the Best 100 Soundtracks of all time" like FM or that other radio station that was recently in this subreddit promoting a similar survey and criticizing the FM one, claiming that they're just the most popular scores but not the best scores. I don't think that's true, the same scores will always pop up.

What was interesting and special this time is that we got to see the personal 9 favorites of each of us. Giving space for much less popular scores like Tron Uprising, Good Time, The Road, videogame soundtracks, etc.

πŸ“’ Discussion What soundtrack started it all ?

For me it was Robin Hood Prince of Thieves by Michael Kamen. Before soundtracks it was Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre and some Kraftwerk.

This was hard to pick just 9, but here are mine. I have a thing for adventure. Some runner ups include:

Batman (Danny Elfman)
Robocop (Basil Poledouris)
Highlander (Michael Kamen)

πŸ“’ Discussion Nine faves from an old boring guy

This is awfully John Williams heavy, but I don't want to leave out some of those unbelievably classic scores he's produced. (And with Star Wars and Raiders, I'm using one icon for three movies each - the original Star Wars trilogy and the first three Indiana Jones films.) I'm also trying to pick the best single score from each of my favorite composers, if possible, but even here there are multiples - I'd vote for Star Trek III & III and How To Train Your Dragon I & II, for example. And I had to leave out some favorite composers like Michael Giacchino and Hans Zimmer. Still, this kinda captures my faves.

There were so many great soundtracks to choose from but these albums are played more often than others in my household. I tried (unsuccesfully) to have some diversity of composers.

πŸ“’ Discussion My 9 defining albums and 9 favourite albums

Thumbnail
gallery
17 Upvotes

Bit of a cop out but I couldn't keep it to just one list, so I've split it into two - 9 that have defined my life and my 9 favourite albums

Star Wars - The first soundtrack I remember being aware of in a film

Lord of the Rings - First soundtrack that really got me into film scores

Pirates of the Caribbean - Specifically At Worlds End, the soundtrack I've listen to in full the most

Tomb Raider: Legends - First video game soundtrack that I listened to on the regular

Assassin's Creed - First soundtrack that really got me into video game scores

Game of Thrones - First soundtrack that really got me into tv show scores

The Avengers - First soundtrack that really got me into superhero scores

Gravity - Has what I would consider the best 15 minutes of film music ever (Tiangong/Shenzou/Gravity)

Arrival - The last time I loved a score enough to buy it on physical media to listen to outside of digital

Choosing my top 9 is tough. Some are givens (LotR, HtTYD, Gravity, PotC) but on another day others couldve snuck up there (Interstellar, Arrival, Star Wars, X-Men First Class, Chicken Run)

πŸ“’ Discussion The 1 Album that made me

This is the ONE album that made me. I saw Star Wars ('77) in the theater and the music gripped me forever. I spent the next 10+ years of my life searching for music that made me felt like this. Remember this is pre-internet days. I didn't know what I didn't know. I was telling my friend how I was about to put my cassette player next to the TV while I play the scene in Star Trek The Motion Picture. My friend laughed at me and told me he had a cassette tape I needed to Listen to. He gave me this. Oh good lord, this is what I spent the last 10 years of my life searching for! I didn't know they sold movie music! I devoured this album. I bought my own and would listen to it every night at bedtime. I memorized every note. Star Wars, Imperial March, Luke and Leia, Superman, Raiders, Star Trek tv theme, Close Encounters and 2 E.T. songs. I literal listened to it so much I wore out the tape. I talked my mom into buying a CD player. I made my own mixed tapes. My dorm room was a 25 minute walk from campus, AT LEAST 4 trips a day. I didn't care I had MY collection of music with me all the time. I had rechargeable batteries and ALWAYS had the replacement 4 waiting because 90 minutes tapes ate through batteries on the Walkman.

I have my list of scores that are my favorite. Last count my S+ tier had 26 scores on it. Batman Begins (Zimmer & Howard), Beautiful Mind (Horner), Bram Stoker's Dracula (Kilar), Braveheart (Horner), Dances with Wolves (Barry), Dark Knight (Zimmer, Howard), Field of Dreams (Horner), How to Train Your Dragon (Powell), Inception (Zimmer), Interstellar (Zimmer), Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2 (Zimmer, Powell), Last of the Mohicans (Jones, Edelman), Lord of the Rings 1-3 (Shore), Mad Max: Fury Road (Holkenberg), Man of Steel (Zimmer, Holkenberg), Pirates 1 (Badelt), Pirates 2 and 4 (Zimmer), Sinbad (HG Williams), Star Trek Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock (Horner),β€”- Legends of the Fall and Pirates 3 being my favorite 2

But this ONE album started it all for me. Thanks to my friend and Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops
