Release I built the most boring Windows app possible: it converts images and makes them fit a size limit. 4 MB of RAM. No ads. No upload

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Ever needed to upload a photo for a job application, visa, or some government form, only to get hit with "Maximum file size: 500 KB. JPG only"?

So you Google a converter, upload your photo (sometimes even your passport) to some random website, download the result, and find out it's still too large.

I got tired of doing this, so I built ImgConv.

It's a tiny, free, open-source Windows app that converts and compresses images without uploading anything anywhere.

Here's what it does:

  • Right-click an image in Explorer → Convert to JPG/PNG.
  • Set a maximum file size (like 500 KB), and it automatically finds the best quality that fits.
  • Supports PNG, JPG, HEIC, WebP, AVIF, and other common formats for input.
  • Preserves the original file and handles phone rotation.

The part I'm most happy with is how lightweight it is:

  • ~150 KB installer, ~70 KB executable.
  • ~4 MB RAM while idle.
  • No internet connection, telemetry, or background update checks.
  • No admin rights or additional runtime downloads required.

I also wanted something anyone could inspect. The entire app is about 800 lines of C#, released under MIT.

GitHub + download: https://github.com/kiranohaiiro/ImgConv

A couple of limitations: WebP/HEIC can be opened but not exported, and the installer isn't code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may show a warning.

It's a small project, but it solves an annoyance I've had for years.

Would you actually use something like this, or is there something obvious I'm missing?

Self-Promotion Wednesdays I got livestreams and video calls working without internet

Thumbnail youtu.be
• Upvotes

I've been building MeshLive, a free and open-source app for voice/video calls and live audio/video broadcasting entirely over Bluetooth.

It started as an Android experiment, but I've now expanded it to Windows, macOS and iPhone too.

Where things stand now:

  • Android: v0.4.0-beta is out, with voice/video calls, live broadcasts and experimental multi-hop calling through other phones.
  • Windows: Experimental beta available to download. Supports Bluetooth calls with Android.
  • macOS: Native Mac implementation with cross-platform calling, currently built from source.
  • iPhone: Early iOS implementation, also open source. Still needs more hardware testing and isn't on the App Store yet.

One of the more interesting features is live broadcasting. A phone can start a live camera or audio stream, nearby phones can watch it, and those phones can forward the stream further over Bluetooth.

Android 0.4.0 also introduces experimental relayed calls, so two people don't necessarily have to be within direct Bluetooth range.

The hardest part has been Bluetooth itself. Bandwidth varies massively between devices, and getting real-time video working without delaying audio has taken quite a bit of experimentation with fragmentation, packet scheduling and buffering. Adding desktop operating systems introduced even more compatibility challenges.

There's end-to-end encrypted communication, no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no central servers.

It's still experimental, though. Video quality and range are limited, some phone combinations work better than others, and the security hasn't been independently audited. Not something to rely on for emergencies yet.

Free and open source (GPL-3.0-or-later).

Downloads and source:

Would love to hear what people think of offline communication software like this, especially now that it's expanding beyond phones.

Release I missed Picasa Photo Viewer, so I built Licasa.

Anyone else still miss Google's Picasa photo viewer before google killed it?

I did, so I built Licasa, an open-source image viewer and editor for Linux inspired by that experience. It has just one base aim, show a preview of the image as soon as you click open.

What it does today:

  • Open photos straight from your file manager, fullscreen or in a floating window.
  • Handle modern image formats: HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, JPEG XL and JPEG 2000, alongside JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WebP. It also supports RAW previews.
  • Play Motion Photos and animated APNGs, so there's more to see than a still frame.
  • Crop, adjust and export when a photo needs a quick touch-up.
  • Stay ready for the next photo with an optional background mode for faster repeat opens. It's off by default.

It's free and open source under the BSD 2-Clause license.

Website: https://licasa.app

I'd love feedback from people who miss Picasa too, or just want a straightforward Linux photo viewer. if you try Licasa, I'd be interested in how it handles the photos and formats you actually use, especially opening times on your hardware. Bug reports and contributions are welcome.

Discussion What do you wish your screenshot tool could do?

• Upvotes

I’m building a screenshot tool, mainly for my own use, but I’m considering making it open source on GitHub when it’s ready.

I was a long-time Snagit user, but I’m not a fan of its move to a subscription model, which is partly what motivated me to build my own.

I’m curious what people like or dislike about the tools they currently use. What features couldn’t you live without? What annoys you? Is there anything you wish your screenshot tool could do but doesn’t?

I’d love to hear what people actually want from a screenshot tool.

The "System-Meeter-Bar"!

Windows: https://www.app-smb.com/index.html

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.it_huskys.smb

The “System-Meeter-Bar” is designed to offer a solution for license friendly support and analysis tools who are compact and not related to EULA’s who require licensing for commercial usage. The SMB is a system data collection tool, system overview tool, benchmark, test and system report tool all in one. You can use it for displaying an overview of your system, finding issues or testing the stability of your system via the built-in benchmark tool, no matter if it’s used on a private system or used in a commercial environment.

What does the name “System-Meeter-Bar” stand for/mean? The App-Name "System-Meeter-Bar" is a worldplay and mixture of the words "System" (target relation), "Meeting" and "Meter" (collecting point and measurement unit) and "Bar" (for its list design and placed at the Screen-side (Side-Bar)). The combination of all these words result in the Apps name "System-Meeter-Bar" or "SMB" for short.

Key-Features of the System-Meeter-Bar:

The SMB offers many useful features for support and system tests:

Data & Info

This is the main function of the SMB that shows a live overview of the system with most important data of the system, System-Core Data, CPU, GPU, RAM, Battery, Display-Data, Storage usage and Network activity.

System Monitoring

With the live monitoring of the CPU, System-Core Data, Storage-Devices and Network traffic, you can monitor the load the full system with easy activity tracking.

Benchmark & Test

The SMB comes with its own built-in benchmark tool to stress-test the system for heat or power issues, but can also score the CPU power of a system for comparison with others, or test the speed of your storage devices, next to quick-call any system/option settings you need. On Android devices you can also check the functionality of flashlight, vibration, display/screen (dead pixels) and more.

System-Shortcuts

The SMB comes with its own built-in System-Shortcut menu. that offers quick access and triggers to many Configurations, options and apps/folders/tools, that are hidden or difficult to find in the system.

Device-Tests

The SMB offers a wide range of features to test the full functionality of your android device. Screen-Color tests to test for burnins or defect pixels, vibration or you flashlight. Device fectects like these can be easily detected with the SMB.

System-Report

With this feature you can create a custom system report of the system the SMB is running on with all System-Core data, Hardware data and benchmark results, for troubleshooting and analysis.

Homescreen Widgets for CPU, Storage, Traffic, Temperatures and Battery

Have your systems performance always in sight with the SMB Widgets!

Release GitCraft: an Open Source git client

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi there!

I've been paying GitKraken for years, and tbh, it works decent (performance wise maybe it's not the best out there), but I think there's no point on not doing your own daily use tools today.

So I decided to follow the *Craft thing, and made GitCraft.

It fills perfectly my daily use, but if you miss something, I'll be glad to be implementing those things.

Works for Windows and Linux.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays AliFind: right-click any image to find the product on AliExpress (free browser extension)

• Upvotes

I made a free extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox that turns any image on the web into an AliExpress search:

  • Right-click an image, or drag a box around part of the page, and it searches AliExpress for that product
  • Results are re-ranked by visual similarity using image embeddings, so the exact item ends up on top instead of whatever sells most
  • Shows the shipping cost to your country next to each price, plus a "Smart Choice" pick that weighs match, rating, orders and price
  • No account, nothing to configure

https://alifind.app

Edge: https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/detail/bbcpdgegpfmdnkiigafiaaalkljomjon

It's free; product links are affiliate links, which pays for the server. Feedback welcome, especially on what would make it more useful.

Looking for software I built a free video editor for Windows that removes your “ums” in one click and makes captions without uploading anything

Hey all. I’m a solo dev and I’ve been building CutShit, a free video editor for Windows. Search “CutShit” on the Microsoft Store.

I built it because the most tedious parts of editing are the same every time: captions, cutting out filler words, and fighting background music under dialogue. So it does those for you:

  • Auto-captions made on your PC: nothing uploaded, and it can translate them
  • One-click filler-word removal: “um”, “uh” and friends, gone
  • Separate voice from music: keep the dialogue, swap the soundtrack
  • Normal editing: timeline, text, music, MP4 export on your own machine
  • Imports from OBS scene collections, Google Drive, Dropbox or local files

It’s completely free. No watermark, no subscription, no “pro” tier, no account needed to edit, and your footage never leaves your PC.

[20–40 second demo GIF: filler words disappearing, or captions appearing]

It’s still early, so I’d love honest feedback: what’s confusing, what’s broken, and what would make you switch from what you use now? I read every comment.

Discussion Just discovered DWUT - a pretty impressive alternative to Chris Titus Tech's WinUtil

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

I recently came across DWUT (Darko's Windows Utility Tool) on GitHub, and I'm genuinely impressed.

I've been using Chris Titus Tech's WinUtil for a while, but DWUT immediately caught my attention, especially because of its UI.

The interface looks incredibly polished, and it packs a ton of features into one place: Windows tweaks, debloating, cleanup, gaming optimizations, network tools, VPN, and more.

What I found particularly interesting is that it also includes:

  • USB Flasher for creating bootable USB drives.
  • BIOS & Firmware tools for managing firmware-related settings and tweaks.
  • VM Builder for creating and setting up virtual machines directly from the utility.
  • Task Manager and Win+R customization, allowing you to change the default Windows Task Manager and Run dialog.

I haven't tested all these features yet, especially the USB Flasher and BIOS tools, but it's pretty cool to see them integrated into a single utility.

I'm still exploring DWUT, so I can't really comment on its long-term stability or whether its optimizations are actually better than WinUtil's. But in terms of interface and available features, it looks really promising.

I've attached a couple of screenshots of the dashboard and Optimizer section.

GitHub: https://github.com/Darko-Development/Darkos-Windows-Utility-Tool-DWUT

Just to be clear: Darko didn't ask me to make this post, and this isn't sponsored or promoted in any way. I simply stumbled upon this project, thought it was worth sharing, and figured others might find it useful too.

Has anyone else tried DWUT? How does it compare to WinUtil in practice? Any potential issues or tweaks worth avoiding?

Small correction: I accidentally uploaded the wrong screenshot. Here's the correct one: https://imgur.com/a/6tReRnB

Self-Promotion Wednesdays I made a free full-page screenshot tool for sharing design feedback

When I need feedback on a long page, a stack of screenshots makes it hard to tell which comment belongs where. One thing that helps is capturing the whole page first, then adding numbered notes or arrows right on the image. Check the preview for missing images or repeated headers, and blur private details before sharing.

I made Knotflow to make that workflow easier. It captures a full page as a PNG; the editor adds notes, arrows and blur, and it can export a PDF too. Basic capture is free. The editor and PDF are currently free as well, with an email to unlock them. Your captures stay on your computer.

You can find Knotflow by searching the Chrome Web Store. I'd love to hear what works (or breaks) on the pages you use.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays I built a pit wall for my dev machine: one menu bar app for all my dev servers and Claude Code sessions (free, open source)

Thumbnail pitwall.aenzenith.com
0 Upvotes

I usually have Claude Code running in four or five projects at once, each with its own dev server. I kept losing track: a session sat on a permission prompt for ten minutes, two servers fought over :5173, and one crashed in a tab I wasn't looking at.

So I built Pitwall. It lives in the menu bar and boils all of that down to three colours: green for a running server, orange for Claude, red when something's down.

What it does

  • Dev servers: start, stop and restart them from the menu bar. If a port is busy, it takes the next free one. If a server crashes, it restarts on its own (and gives up after 3 crashes in a minute). Stopping one kills the whole process tree, so no orphaned vite.
  • Claude Code: you get notified the moment a session finishes or needs your permission, on the desktop or optionally on your phone. One click puts you back in that session.
  • The window: projects grouped into teams, plus a terminal under every page. It splits into panes and can reopen an old Claude session where it left off.
  • ⌥⇧P from anywhere: jump to a project, start it, or jot down a card. Hand a card to Claude and it starts a session with it.
  • Team radio: an MCP server that lets Claude ask Pitwall whether the server is up, read its output, or restart it (macOS/Linux).
  • Also:
    • a Today timeline;
    • Fuel, which shows what's left of your usage limits;
    • a Files window;
    • Garage, for outdated dependencies and pending migrations;
    • a mini tower in the corner of your screen;
    • a pitwall CLI (macOS for now);
    • a VS Code / Cursor extension.
  • ⌘Q shows a chequered flag before you quit: uncommitted work, unpushed commits, sessions still waiting on you, and servers still running.

Free and open source (MIT), for macOS (Apple Silicon), Windows and Linux.

Built with Tauri (Rust + Vue).

Feedback is very welcome, especially from anyone juggling several Claude Code sessions.

Looking for software C-PEN Connect BT10

I bought the C-PEN Connect BT10 on eBay, hoping to use it with my computer. I got it and tried to download and find the software for it, but I ran into some trouble. I cannot, for the life of me, find software for PC that will actually connect with this pen. I found an unlisted Android app that I remotely installed, which let the pen work on my phone, but I cannot find a way to get this thing working on my PC. I need help, please and thank you.

Jobs & Education Should I stay in my current backend developer job or join TCS with a 3.5 LPA offer?

Hi everyone,

I need some career advice. I currently have a TCS offer of 3.5 LPA, and I am working as a Backend Developer at a small company with a salary of 3 LPA.

Here is my situation:

- I joined my current company during my B.Tech 4th year, 2nd semester.

- I have completed 8 months of backend development experience.

- I recently graduated.

- My current company does not provide a PF account.

- I am gaining practical backend development experience, but I am also considering looking for better job opportunities.

I am confused about whether I should stay in my current company, continue my job search for better backend developer roles, or leave and join TCS.

The salary difference between my current job and the TCS offer is only ₹50,000 per year.

My questions:

  1. Will not having a PF account create problems during background verification or future job applications?

  2. Should I join TCS or continue searching for better backend developer opportunities?

  3. With 8 months of experience, is it realistic to find a backend developer job with a better package?

  4. What would be the best decision for my long-term career growth?

I would appreciate honest advice from people working in the IT industry, especially those who have experience with TCS or have switched jobs early in their careers.

Thank you!

Self-Promotion Wednesdays Why copying iPhone photos to USB can require Wi-Fi, even with a cable

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Here's something worth checking before backing up your iPhone photos to an external USB drive.

If you use Optimize iPhone Storage, some photos you see in the Photos app may not actually have their full-resolution originals stored on your phone.

The originals could be sitting in iCloud.

So even with a USB drive plugged directly into your iPhone, those photos need to download first.

For a manual backup, Apple's Photos and Files apps can work. But it's important to select the original files rather than accidentally exporting reduced-quality copies.

I'm the developer of VaultDrive, an iOS and Android app for copying photos, videos, and files directly to a compatible USB drive or SSD.

On iPhone, VaultDrive can:

  • Download iCloud-only originals before copying them.
  • Use Wi-Fi only for those downloads if preferred.
  • Back up selected photos, videos, and albums without a Mac or PC.
  • Preserve original quality without intentional compression.
  • Keep track of copied files for subsequent backups.

Photos already stored locally can be copied without internet access.

VaultDrive is free to try, with an optional one-time Pro upgrade for unlimited and incremental backups. No subscription.

iPhone App Store:
https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6772883827?pt=128255904&ct=r&mt=8

50% Off Promo direct App Store link :

https://apps.apple.com/redeem/?ctx=offercodes&id=6772883827&code=WELCOME50

One important tip: always open a few files from the USB drive to verify the backup before deleting anything from your phone or iCloud.

For those using iCloud Photos, do you also keep a separate physical copy of your photo library?

Self-Promotion Wednesdays KillerShot, an open source encrypted screenshot album that replaces Snipping Tool

Snipping Tool froze on me one too many times, so I got pissed off again and built my own.

It takes over Print Screen (region, window, monitor, all monitors, recording), freezes the desktop so menus stay in the shot, and drops everything into an encrypted album you can search by the text inside the pictures. It also has an editor with real redaction, MP4/GIF recording, a CLI, and works with KillerMCP.

Same deal as the rest of the Killer Apps family: free, GPLv3, no account, no telemetry. Same themes and languages too. The latest language is Slovenian bringing the languages up to twenty now.

https://killershot.net

Let me know what breaks. There will be bugs and I'm stretching myself pretty thin these days so bug reports and feature requests are helpful.

I also have a ton of other new stuff coming out soon...
