Beginner My “lost” shrimp that finally turned up!

They came a few days late and freezing cold after Royal Mail messed up and sent them to the wrong place and then the tracking got stuck and nobody knew where they were, all good now and settled in to their new home with nice warm water :)

Never had shrimp before and also quite new to aquatics in general so hopefully tank is all good and they will be happy!

I did want to query feeding as they seem to have already stripped the tank of any gunk in a matter of days (and there are a couple of nerite in there too) how often do you feed and how much? I have bought some lollies and some shrimp complete food and I’m also happy to give them fresh veg. I have 12 full grown and the bag also had a couple of fry in it.

Any other tips much appreciated!

These are my first neos. I am running a bit of an experiment with the colors by crossing yellow goldenbacks with green jade goldenbacks.

Beginner Tank parameters

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have been cycling a new 30L tank for my future baby shrimps. Everything in the tank is inert, unlike my first tank which uses Fluval stratum.

I use strip tests except for ammonia which is a liquid test. Unfortunately my tap water seems to be very hard and I currently have (after 3 weeks of cycling):

GH over 16

KH 15

pH 8

No ammonia

No nitrates

No nitrites

Is there anything to do to soften the water? I don't have access to RO water, or at least don't have much experience with it.

My other tank with the fluval stratum has pretty perfect parameters. Much lower KH and GH.

Thank you for the help! Here is a picture of the tank

I have 6 neo shrimps in this pot currently and the microfauna is getting out of control .
Earlier I had 2 guppies in this pot too and I guess that was the reason microfauna didn’t exist back then.
It’s been 2 weeks since I moved my guppies due to tank size and as I heard shrimps won’t mate in a tank with a predator.
One of my cherry shrimp is berried now , I don’t wanna bring back guppies . How do I control this situation?

Discussion Does anyone else struggle to tell the difference between a rili and a white ring of death?

My tank throws out tons of different genetic variants and it’s hard to keep track of them individually. Sometimes I can’t tell if it’s white ring of death or a rili. Is this a common issue or am I dumb?

Help: Beginner My shrimp are dying and I don’t know why

I just started a neocaridina shrimp tank for the first time and a bunch of my shrimp have died in the past few days since I’ve gotten them. I cycled my tank for a month before I put them in, drip acclimated them, my ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are all zero, pH is 7, GH is 10, KH is 3. Of the ones that are left, some look fine and others look like they’re dying. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I’m new to this, so is there something I’m missing that I should’ve done?

Discussion I haven’t done a water change since May

Post image
14 Upvotes

I have my shrimp in a heavily planted aquarium, and I haven’t done any water changes since I got them in May. Just top offs with treated distilled water and fertilizer (once in a while a potassium dose) and adding an almond leaf once the last one is gone.

They have been constantly berried and quite a few of the shrimplets survive. Now I have over 50 when I started with around 20.

I don’t feed them too often, maybe 2 times a week since they have plenty of biofilm in the tank.

They seem to be thriving, but should I do a water change? Since they haven’t had one before, I’m worried about shocking them with new tap water (treated ofc)

How often do you guys do water changes for your shrimp?

Discussion Do amano shrimp eat black beard algae?

I've been told many times that they don't but I added about 10 for algae control in my 40 gallon breeder and as you can see they have eaten back the algae down to the surface. This driftwood was absolutely covered thick about 3 weeks ago. They may not get the style points that cherry shrimp get but I'm not sure there is a better cleanup crew.

My mom added a couple shrimp to her beta tank and a couple went missing so I took the remaining ones to my only shrimp tank. But this one looks funny to me. I’ve never had one with clasp but have had berried shrimpers

Help: Shrimp ID & Shrimp Sexing Thought I got all blue velvets but now I’m not so sure about this one?

Post image

I recently purchased 5 new blue velvet neos (that I’m hoping are all female, but that’s an issue for another post). At my LFS, I thought this one was just really dark blue but now that I’ve had her a week I think she might be something else. What color would you call this if she’s not a blue velvet?
