Discussion I just found out that I was not having the second male lead syndrome 15 years ago!
I used to love Chihayafuru so much. I loved everything about the anime I even started learning Karuta lol. While I loved everything about Chihaya I always wished she also took some time to figure out her relationships. Back when the anime was released the manga was still on-going and there was no sign of Chihaya and Taichi’s relationship actually developing. I just found out they ended up together and this is the happiest I’ve felt in a very long time. I can’t wait to read the manga now, I still remember the last chapter I read as if it was yesterday. Time surely flies by. Anyways I was so so happy about this and I don’t have anyone irl who’d get how I’m feeling right now so I just wanted to share how I feel with you guys! Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day!

Discussion Did a fun breakdown of the publishers Viz licenses Shojo/Josei manga from!
I decided to take a look at the proportions various companies occupy in Viz’s full Shojo/Josei manga catalog to the best of my knowledge since Viz is arguably the largest single English language manga publisher. If I made mistakes please feel free to let me know!
Some interesting observations:
- Asahi Shimbun is basically entirely dominated by Junji Ito’s works from Monthly Halloween/Nemuki
- Betsuma, Hana to Yume, and Lala represented the largest single magazines drawn from
- Shogakukan had the single largest share of Viz’s licensed Shojosei titles. They publish magazines like Betsucomi, Cheese!, Chuchu, Ciao, Sho-Comi, Flowers, and Petit Comic
- Asuka magazine represented the largest non-Hitotaubashi group company/magazine Viz has licensed Shojosei from (Hitotsubashi group is the conglomerate that has Shogakukan, Shueisha, and Hakusensha all under its umbrella)
- Some magazines from which only one or two titles have been licensed from include: You magazine, Chuchu, Comic Crimson, B’s log comic, Mystery Bonita, Comic Nicola, Elegance Eve, Comic Zero Sum, Cookie, etc
- Likely due to contractual stipulations, only Shogakukan and Shueisha Shojosei series are housed under Viz’s manga app subscription besides the singular Hakusensha series recently included (Hana-Kimi)
- Viz appears to have lost the license to 13 previously licensed Shojosei series for various reasons (eg 2008 financial crash, mangaka conflict with Japanese publishers, etc)
What are your thoughts?

Red River light novels and drama CDs
Just wondering if there are any fans (or enjoyers) of Red River around here? I recently did a translation of the extra chapter released in the fan book from 2002, I didn't see it anywhere online and decided to do it myself. If anyone knows where I can post it, let me know! I've decided to put the knowledge I acquired in Japanese into good use and do more translations of media that never made it outside of Japan. There are 5 prequel light novels telling Kail's story and there are also the drama CDs from the 90s which adapted the manga up until volume 18. (I'd say they're a much better adaptation than the anime is) All of this might take me a while to do, but if anyone is interested in all of this stuff, I'd be happy to keep the fandom, if there is one, alive!!
Red River Episode 17: New Conspiracy
Well after two episodes of Yuri and Kail overcoming obstacles as a love dovey power couple, a new conspiracy unfolds.
I will say that Nakia has been a very good antagonist. Nakia the big bad who has lots of power but has lackey’s doing the evil deeds on her behalf. Usually when it comes to that kind of antagonist, they don’t feel particularly menacing. Nakia did feel a little like that at the beginning, but as the series progressed we see just how menacing she is. The plots that Nakia hatched before this episode are as follows:
Abducted Yuri from her home and century with the goal to sacrifice her. She was even going to do it in front of an audience.
Had Tito killed because he saved Yuri.
Instigated an attack on Alinna to separate Yuri and Kail
Had Yuri poisoned with something that causes a death like state to steal her “corpse”.
Tried to obtain a mind controlling talisman
Had Kail’s infiltration campaign for Malataya sabotaged.
Had Zannanza assassinated.
Raised a false Ishtar to smear Yuri and by extension Kail’s reputations.
Instigated a false love child to try and tear Yuri and Kail apart
Each one of these schemes shows just how ruthless Nakia is, and people have died in them. Furthermore, each one is unique. This conspiracy was the greatest one yet as revealed at the end of the episode. Nakia exploited Kail’s caution and Yuri’s restlessness. She had the kind assassinated and the only hiccup in her plot was Judah’s presence.
Judah has a good head on his shoulders. He knows what his mother is capable of. When Yuri asked for his help in foiling his mother’s plot, while shocked Judah readily accepted that his mother would do this. He doesn’t want anything to do with what his mother is doing. Then Nakia uses mind control on her own son to achieve her goals. Talk about a dysfunctional family.
This episode did a great job really showing how awful and dangerous Nakia is. Nakia is willing to stoop any level to get what she wants, but always has others pay the price for it.
Now that that is settled. The most tender moment in the show wasn’t Kail and Yuri for once. It was Ursula and Kash. While quick, it’s sweet to see those two become a couple. Especially since it took some nudging from Yuri.
If you don’t mind a spoiler (Red River) another couple forms. If you want to know more (Red River) it’s Kikkurri and one of the twins.
While the king meant well what he was telling Yuri is once more making her feel that she’s not adequate to be with Kail. Yuri doesn’t think she’s capable enough to actually be Kail’s consort. I think this is in part because there’s still a part of Yuri that doesn’t feel like she belongs there. Yuri has become used to life in the Hittite Empire. She has friends, she has a horse, she has the admiration and respect of many, and she has a handsome prince absolutely enraptured with her. Yuri sees this as temporary and that she has to return to her own time and place. It’s beginning to feel less like a desire and more like an obligation.
Finally, Ramses. Ramses doesn’t work for free, and when he sets his mind on something he doesn’t give up easily. Ramses made his intentions clear when he said he’d be back for more. Furthermore, he sees the dysfunciton and strife of the Hittite court as a source of entertainment to him. Ramses is a wild card.

Shoujo Girlies who mainly likes action and psychological thriller
So like I consider myself a shoujo girlie and see myself new to the demographic in terms of manga not anime. So like whenever I tell people that I'm into shoujo, they always assume romance and ask my thoughts about shounen romance. Not saying there's anything wrong with romance as I've also dabbled in the genre a lot mainly shoujo romance but still. Like in my friend group which they're really into anime and manga and whenever I bring up shoujo especially in the action/psychological thriller genre it feels so isolating. Like if someone has watched a shoujo it mainly just romance(which not saying I don't enjoy but it's just not what I'm focusing now despite reading Kaze Ki No Uta(which I love) and ordering The Heart of Thomas) or a shounen romance😭😭. Like my favorite shoujo mangas are A Cruel God Reigns, 7 Seeds, Otherworld Barbara, Neko Mix Genkitan Toraji and soon to be Requiem of the Rose King plus Hitmitsu: The Top Secret. Just idk what I'm saying but imma just post.

News Omoi just licensed the “Georgie” vintage Shojo manga with Manga Mavericks for Spring 2027 English Release!
Edit: Manga Mavericks will release the series physically in August 2027 in a set of 2 deluxe omnibuses!!!
Omoi is a $5/month manga subscription app who both license original content and host content from other publishers like Glacier Bay, Kodansha, Star Fruit Books, etc! They have also partnered occasionally with Scholastic Graphix to release a couple series physically if they do well enough on the subscription app. They have previously licensed Shojo like Sukeban Deka, A snow fox at the northern fort, etc.
The Georgie manga by Yumiko Igarashi ran in Sho-Comi magazine 1982-1984 and is 5 volumes long. It had a 45 episode anime adaptation called “Lady Georgie” that is available on English on Blu-ray and on the Retro Crush streaming service.

Discussion Throwback to some niche nostalgic Shojo/Josei anime I never see anyone mention
Has anyone else watched any of these? If so, when? Keep in mind I’m not necessarily saying that all of these are good, just that they’re nostalgic even if some of them are hot messes (*cough* Amnesia *cough*).

Recommendation Fl has to substitute for lover/partner of ml [The heart of Leela] recs pls
Stories where fl has to interact with ml as substitute of smb else but fl/ml falls in love e.g. she is looklike of smb or her twin but she has to pretend to be them for some time because of circumstances . Both fl and og woman interact with ml , ml just doesn't know fl is the one he had fall in love with .
There was a story (idk the name) fl is the maid and she had to act as her lady at night to attend the husband and also childbearing was her responsibility because the lady had weak constitution. They were hiding her sickness to keep her married, and agreed to call her to the parents home when fl gets pregnant to hide the fact she's the one giving birth.
In Heart of Leela, fl is scarred so she can't get married but her sister is really beautiful and parents want her to marry wealthy household to improve their lives. Fl is good at writing and has more knowledge hence she's given the task of writing letters to ml in the name of her sister basically to seduce ml.
There's also indian movie called Will you be my friend where fl writes letters to ml in name of her sister because ml liked her
There's also manga where fl pretends to be her sister - fiance of ml because he becomes blind and sister runs away

I drew one of my favourite anime pairings, Hak x Yona! 💞
It's been more than 10 years since the first season of Akatsuki no Yona aired, and I can't count how many times I've rewatched this anime since then! Still waiting for S2, it's been a year since the announcement.
Hak and Yona have such a beautiful relationship, based on love, protection, trust , everything you'd expect from a shoujo couple.
I also love both their designs! Yona truly stands as one of the prettiest anime heroines to me. And Hak is so handsome it should be illegal!
Traditional art, done with alcohol markers.

manga recs with pushover characters/misbehaving fl characters + well behaved ml characters
just read a tsukishima textfic with this theme (iheartnanas on tiktok), and was re-reminded of how much i love this theme. i LOVEEE kimi ni todoke which obviously has a pushover main character, and i also love “love, thats an understatement” which kind of shares this. if anyone has any recs for mangas where the guy is the pushover, id LOVE that, but if the girl is the pushover thats also good 🥹🥹🥹
also if anyone has any recommendations for mangas where the fl is the misbehaving character, and the ml is very proper and well behaved, slide them my way 👀👀👀👀👀
thank you in advance 🥹🥹🥹
