Advice Unknowingly rescued an abused dog?

6.9k Upvotes

Hi all, I’ll try to not make this long.

upon scrolling a buy & sell website today I came across a dog (4 year old girl, border collie/ blue heller) for $250 needing to rehomed. The lady didn’t have time for her, said her other dog is unwell (her other animal had torn both of its ACLS) & she’s just way too timid.

Curiosity got the better of me and I asked if my partner and I could come meet her. They agreed instantly and we headed over.
Upon entering the house there was a bit going on, a lot of cats, a snake, a dog (unwell) in an extremely small crate.
This girl was outside, she hid INSTANTLY when we came out and wet herself, the lady said that she often does that.

The lady said she has had her since she was a puppy and she’s ALWAYS been timid, horrible with other dogs ( not aggressive just scared)
The dog would not come near us for around 45 mins where she eventually came around and would eat some kibble from our hand.

Upon questioning this lady just about the dogs day to day life, she spends all her time outside, she didn’t have grass available just dirt, she’s never been on a walk in her entire 4 years of being on this earth, never seen a beach, never been groomed and is apparently horrifically scared of water. (Being bathed)

The way the dog reacted to this lady just solidified it for me and she didn’t seem to care for the dog much and was practically begging us to take her.
I realised that this was going to be a HUGE job but I couldn’t leave her there, my heart was aching for her and I knew she needed more.

Getting her to the car was the easiest part, as soon as we put a leash on her she practically ran. She was extremely happy in the car, allowing small pats, we didn’t make a big fuss just let her do her thing.
Upon getting home, getting out of the car was hard, she wanted to stay in there so bad, she eventually let us take her out but had many accidents in this time, then hid under the car for an hour and half. We didn’t pressure her, just brought her food and water.
She eventually left the garage and wanted to walk around the house, she let us have a few pats but for the most part just so so so scared of us. And would go back under the car, didn’t want to out to our backyard.

She was covered in bugs (not fleas surprisingly) and actually let be bathe her!! She did AMAZING, she sat with me and even gave me a few licks when I was cleaning her, it was a massive task but she was not scared in that time at all.
Her hair was horrible and matted so close to her skin. It took 10 good shampoos to get her white.

She loved being brushed, dried, petted but when it was over it was back to a lot of anxiety and scared to be near us.
A few more accidents when getting overwhelmed but eventually ended the night in her crate ( which she is comfortable in) with her new comfy bed and is sleeping soundly.

Please tell me how to help this girl, I do not want to fail her. I want to help her so much. I know it’s going to take a lot of time but some advice would help. I cannot sleep as my stomach is in knots thinking about the life this girl must have had. It hurts me so much.

Advice How do you Euthanize Feral dogs

Rural Texas here, Robertson county.  I was asked by an elderly acquaintance to help take care of 12 feral dogs that were dumped on his land since he knew I did TNR for cats in my spare time.  I do not live on the property and I visit the dogs 4 days a week.  I've been doing so for over a year.  I would remove puppies and make sure the dogs had food, leaving kibble and water available and tossing any cheap meat I could find so that the weaker dogs would get food.  Most have died from ranchers shooting them or by coyotes and/or dog fights.  They live miserable lives.  These dogs are feral and will not approach a human as they are very skittish.  Therefore they can not be taken to the vet for sterilization or euthanasia.  Mobile vets will not help because they say the dogs have to be leash trained or in a crate to be treated.  They also do not dart them.  One vet said she will euthanize them, but I would need to obtain pills to sedate them by another vet, which I couldn't find one willing.  There is no animal control and the sheriff stated to just shoot them.  I am not opposed to shooting them, but I would like for them to be sedated prior because one of the dogs went missing and it showed up 2 weeks later emaciated with her jaw hanging off of her face by a gunshot, since she was too weak to run away and without a jaw to bite me I picked her up and took her to be euthanized at the vet. The poor dog suffered.  With that said I would like to know how do I humanely euthanize these dogs while preventing them from running into the woods injured to expire slowly and painfully.

I am spending my own money on feeding them, and I can't keep this up.  I am only one person spending approx 1k a month. I could spend less and buy them cheaper food, but I know they suffer and will eventually be eliminated so at least they have decent food to eat and also because they do not eat everyday.

The property does not have a home, only an abandoned small RV on many acres, mostly wooded.  No rescues are willing to help.  4 adult dogs remain from the original 12, but now there are also 13 older puppies born in the woods that also need to be eliminated.  I was told that gummies would sedate a dog, but those were recently made illegal in Texas.   Please help with any advice.  The dogs are located just 20 min from Texas A&M university, but although it’s a densely populated area there are few resources for animal welfare.

Any advice and prayers are greatly appreciated. God Bless

FYI: Texas A&M Veterinary school will not help. The school vet clinic is more expensive than regular vet in this area. The Bryan / College area has a population of over over 270,000 and yet they do not have a low cost spay and nueter clinic you have to travel over an hour to Brenham or Waco Texas for the discounted services. Very little resources for animal welfare is provided for this area.

2 of the pups are now missing which is unfortunately common. Over the year many puppies go missing eventhou I provide food. My goal is to decrease suffering for these dogs.

Advice Adopter returned my foster dog after one day and I am heartbroken

I am a European expat in the Philippines. I rescued a dog from the street 8 months ago and have been looking for a good home for her while preparing to move back to my home country.
I held her for 4 months waiting for the adopter to move to the Philippines from abroad. I repeatedly shared all information about the dog, her special needs, and her anxiety. I even organised a video call, and looking back I should have seen the red flags then — I talked for 20 minutes and she didn’t ask a single question.
She told me the dog would have a peaceful room with direct garden access, which sounded perfect for a 17kg Aspin who won’t let strangers walk or pick her up. She seemed cooperative and enthusiastic at first, but as the adoption date approached she became increasingly unresponsive and arranging a pickup date was a nightmare. I thought it was a sure thing — she had even agreed to have the dog’s microchip registered in her name.
They travelled 5 hours to collect her. The red flags continued. They hadn’t prepared a crate and were searching for one last minute on the way — in the Philippines, where large crates are genuinely difficult to find. When they finally arrived and we were signing the contract and going through the care manual, there were again no questions from her. Her husband was more present and asked some things, and seemed surprised by details she clearly hadn’t communicated to him.
Then, last minute, she told me she wanted to put this extremely anxious, trauma-sensitive dog into their bedroom on the top floor — with steep stairs the dog had never encountered and couldn’t safely navigate. She said the ground floor “wasn’t finished yet.” I should have stopped the adoption there. Instead I said to just find somewhere quiet and follow the manual.
When they arrived at their destination, instead of the ready home she had described, they took Mila to a rental flat and left her in a crate overnight — just to put her back in the car the next morning to move into the new, unfinished house along with all their furniture. The dog has heartworm and a history of crate trauma.
She then went silent for an entire day. No photos, no updates, declining my calls. I eventually sent a message stating that if I didn’t hear from her by evening I would pursue legal action and request Mila’s return. Two hours later her husband messaged to say the dog had nearly escaped when they opened the crate, that the house wasn’t finished, and that they weren’t able to provide the environment she needed.
She had bolted into the garden. The only reason she didn’t disappear was that the gate happened to be closed.
They are returning her today and I cannot wait to have her back. But I am left with one month and three weeks to find her a new home before I leave the country, and I am devastated.
I did everything I could think of. I asked for photos of the house, verified her background and experience, checked her passport, wrote a detailed contract with a return clause, video called, and prepared a 7-page care manual with her full medical history. What could I have done differently? And how do I find a better adopter this time? I can’t risk another failed placement — I’m running out of time.
She is a sweet, non-aggressive dog with no behavioural issues. She simply needs a low-stress environment and patient, gentle handling.

I noticed my original post was a mess I asked AI to make it more readable.

Edit: Search Hope for Mila on Tk Tok and FB. You will see the whole story and my attempts to raise funds months ago.

Update: The husband of the woman who bailed out is now helping me to find a home or a foster. He told me that she apparently told him that they will get the dog once the house is finished. He didn’t know labour most of the thing me and her agreed on.

Update 2: I just learned that the couple thought it was a small dog before picking her up. The woman saw many photos, she saw her live through a video chat, I told her about her weight and being a medium size dog multiple times throughout our conversations. They only realised it was a bigger dog when they were already at our place. It explains the small bowls and pee pads they bought and thinking she could just be in their bedroom upstairs. I truly have no words.

Advice Took in a homeless dog a month ago, had no idea she was pregnant. She gave birth this morning in my completely empty apartment. Im moving tomorrow 12 hours north. What do I do

I have a compact SUV so the plan is to drive with the newborns in a crate with the mama (plus my cat and elderly dog). I cannot keep the newborns but I am left with no choice. I am moving to St Louis, Missouri but I work on Scott AFB in Belleville, Illinois. Are there any organizations that could help me in my situation? Even if there is a private boarding facility! Anything!

Please help me figure out what options I have without breaking my apartment lease? I would like to NOT surrender the mama but surrendering the newborns alone is out of the picture, as well. At least until they are eight weeks. What are my options with these conditions?

Please, I will take any help I can get!

Advice help!!! my boyfriends aunt finally said we can have the dog she keeps outside!!

3.5k Upvotes

hiii!! this may be mislabeled (and i will fix if necessary) because we were definitely unprepared for her to say yes since she normally takes our offer as a joke, so but we want to hurry up and take him before they change their mind and/or start feeling guilty about it. my boyfriends aunt has two dogs and we consistently offer to take this white dog because they have another chihuahua who lives indoors who is clearly loved, and this dog they have had for two years who has never left this area and we don’t even know his name 🥲

we are assuming he needs medical care. we can’t assume he has had shots, vaccines, or grooming but we aren’t sure if there are low cost emergency services that could help us last minute on a sunday (we live in atl if that helps)

he will be going from a completely outdoor life to indoors, so we are aware that may be an adjustment for him. we’re thinking we can put a crate on the patio and then slowly keep the door open for longer periods of time? i know a dog trainer who can help us potty train him, but we aren’t sure if we need to socialize him first in addition to quarantining him

he seems so sweet, and he doesn’t deserve to live another devon in this predicament so whatever suggestions or resources you all may have would be much appreciated

Advice Dog showed up at my house

1.4k Upvotes

On Monday a dog showed up in my driveway. She is some sort of pitbull/bully breed with a shorter muzzle and cropped ears, somewhere between 2-5 years old. It was right as a storm was starting and I could tell the thunder was scaring her so I brought her inside. After the weather cleared up I spent a few hours driving around my neighborhood and town asking anyone I saw if they recognized her. I’ve now spent the last 48 hours making online posts as well as calling every vet and shelter within 20 miles. I’ve had her scanned for a microchip and she doesn’t have one. After the 4th it isn’t uncommon to find lost pets so I had hoped that was the situation.

She is an absolute angel and very well behaved. She knows sit and shake, has great dental health, doesn’t beg or jump on people, rides well in a car, and is very loving. These things make me think she was someone’s pet.

When I found her, her ears were still scabbed from being cropped. I gave her a bathe because she was covered in fleas, I avoided the ears assuming they were still healing. As I was drying her I noticed almost all the scabs had come off even though I was very careful not to touch it. Her ears were fully healed underneath, leading me to believe they were not cleaned and taken care of after being cropped

She is not fixed and her nipples are very extended, I think she may have had puppies within the last 6 months.

In my state, after 72 hours of having a stray and searching for the owner you can claim the pet as yours. I’m starting to worry because of her breed and ears that she may have been used for breeding and then dumped. I’m so unsure because how well behaved she is with no fear of people it really makes me think she is someone’s pet. But, with how public I’ve made this found dog (facebook, paw boost, Nextdoor, and contact info left at all local vets and rescues) I just feel like if someone was looking for her they could find her.

I’ve had to work the last two days so I dropped the dog off with my sister. She told me as soon as I left this dog sat by the door and cried for almost 2 hours before relaxing each day, even though there were other people in the house so I fear she is getting attached to me already. She stays by me constantly, even in a dead sleep if I leave the room she wakes up to follow me.

3 months ago I had to euthanize my 15 year old soul dog, I had had her since I was 12. This dogs behavior is so similar to hers but until now I haven’t even thought about getting another dog. It feels like she’s just been dropped in my lap and I’m so confused on what to do. As much as I miss my sweet girl I have enjoyed not having the responsibility of a pet. But this dog is reminding of all the things I love about having a one. She’s currently asleep on the bed beside me, I don’t know what my best course of action is.

Advice Rescuing this dog tomorrow. What should I name him?

He’s on the list to be put down within the next few days and I’m not going to let that happen. He may need some training to get along with other dogs but he’s so friendly I am hoping he is just stressed out by his environment at the pound. I grew up with boxers all my life and I think this guy deserves a home. What should I name him?

Advice ADVICE: Got rejected and have no clue why.

My partner and I are seeking a dog through local rescues, but keep getting denied. I do not understand what the issue is. We have applied at 2 rescues local to us and have been denied on both occasions. My partner and I own a single family home with a fenced in yard. We both work from home full time in stable, flexible, well paying jobs that we have been at for over 5 years each. We are in our 30s. We do not have any children. We have a 7 year old dog who we have had from a puppy - he is well behaved, well mannered, well taken care of and very loved, friendly, and healthy. Neither of us has committed any crimes - we haven't even received speeding tickets before! Both of us grew up with dogs and are very familiar with training, grooming, etc. We have good references from our vet. We are normal, nice people!

The most recent denial was gutting. We applied for a dog through a rescue local to us. The process was incredibly involved, but we liked the idea of working with a rescue that has a dog's best interests at heart.

  1. We filled out the multi-page application that asked, in my opinion, some pretty invasive questions. But we get it - we want to adopt a dog through a reputable rescue, so did not have a problem with this.

  2. We had a 30 minute call with the rescue to answer questions, ask us about our lifestyle and our dog, etc.

  3. We had a home visit facetime where we showed the rescue our home and yard, including where we would put a crate, etc.

  4. We had another call with the CEO of the rescue.

  5. We had a 30 minute call with the foster. They told us all about the dog, asked us about ourselves and our dog, etc.

  6. After all of this, we were approved to schedule a meet and greet with the dog. YAY! On the day of the meet and greet, we met the foster and felt really good about it after. We absolutely adored the dog, she got along great with our dog, we asked good questions, and honestly clicked really well with the foster. There were no red flags whatsoever. The foster told us that the next step would be to confirm whether we wanted to move forward with the dog after discussing and we'd move forward from there. We texted the foster a few hours later to let them know that we loved the dog and wanted to move forward with the adoption. They followed up by sending us a cute picture of the dog and saying that they were so excited.

So we thought that all was good to go. This was on a Saturday, so we didn't expect to hear from the rescue immediately. About 24 hours later, we received a generic generated email telling us that our application was denied and they would not provide any additional information. No person contacting us, nothing.

I was SHOCKED and confused to read this. We thought it was a mistake since all had gone so well. So we reached out to make sure it wasn't a mistake and were completely ghosted. None of the 5 people we were in contact with responded at all.

A few days later, the dog is still listed as adoptable on the rescue's website.

At no point were we rude or anything except for agreeable and kind. We have a clean, loving home. We are normal people. We got along really well with the dog and all seemed great at the meet and greet with the foster. They implied that we were going to get the dog. While I understand that that was not for sure, it really felt solidified.

We really wanted to adopt, but I am extremely jaded after this experience.

Does anyone have any insight as to what may have happened here? We are trying to move forward, but the lack of closure with this dog is keeping me up at night. We really fell in love with this dog, and to receive no feedback or anything after such an intense process is really hard. Thoughts? Thank you.

Advice Shelter dog still won’t leave crate after 4 weeks

Thumbnail

I adopted a 1 year old Cavapoo named Jack from a shelter 4 weeks ago. He did not “get along with children” with his previous owners. He was only there for 1 month, not sure what his history is before that. He won’t come out of his crate on his own. I’m doing my best to take him outside 3x a day to relieve himself wearing a harness. I’m carrying him to the grass and he’ll walk (run) back on his own on the leash. I have an in-home dog trainer coming by late next week to evaluate. We’re also starting Prozac. He’s terrified of every noise (especially children) and will start shaking. It’s just me in my household but there are kids he can hear outside. I managed to get a mobile groomer to shave and get the mats out which couldn’t have been comfortable. I just want him to feel safe enough to come out of the crate on his own. I tried using a slip lead instead of the harness but he wouldn’t move on his own. Looking for any advice or success stories similar to his background you guys might have. I know the 3-3-3 timeline but that is looking unrealistic. Appreciate your responses

UPDATE: Well, 11ish weeks later, we made some progress! I attached a pen around his crate slightly after this post. He comes out and says hi to me. Brushes up against me and asks for pets. He’s laid down next to me and took a nap.

He won’t step more than 2ft out of his pen though for treats. Grabs the treats and runs back inside. I’m letting him explore at his own pace. Putting a rug at the front of his pen seems to have helped.

Walks have gotten worse outside but better putting his harness on and off. He unfortunately got a UTI somehow (vet thinks it’s breed related). He now refuses to potty outside. We will go for a short walk (5 minutes), then he’ll run back inside and ask for a puppy pad to pee on. Not sure how to break this habit. If I stay outside, he starts freaking out by frantically pacing and spinning in circles.

He’s still on Prozac/fluoxetine. Also started calming supplements for nighttime. I have an adaptil diffuser. Plenty of toys and towels to chew on. I think the 3-3-3 timeline has turned into 6 weeks- 6 months -9 or 12 months. We’re still working with a trainer on desensitization and finding ways to build his confidence like mini obstacle courses inside the pen.

I appreciate all the replies and advice from before. I think I see some light at the end of the tunnel but it is definitely taking some time.

Advice Maybe I’m being selfish , but I don’t see the logic in sending this dog to the shelter

Post image

EDIT:(Tallahassee Fl, Spayed 5 years and her is Paris) My sister was planning on sending her dog to the shelter after she did her business in the backseat . It didn’t look healthy whatsoever , bloody and kind of watery . So I naturally assumed that she got into something , she is really small and was known for getting into the trash can and scavenging whenever possible . Naturally with that in mind we made sure to keep the living space as clean as possible , but her moments just became less frequent . My issue is the behaviour of her reasons , I’ve always been very logical with things and when she told me that “ she forced out the p$&p because she wanted attention” it made me question how that would be possible . Her evidence was that yesterday she used the bathroom no problem , it looked normal , and only when she was in the house was when she had that bloody disaster . Running off physical evidence (granted she admitted she wasn’t always watching the dog ) and hear say from other people didn’t seem probable whatsoever. In which it just turned into “ well it’s her dog “ that dog that she never trained to avoid these mistakes. Anyways she’s planning to send her to the shelter and I wanna see if I could get someone to get her out of there as soon as possible , so she can find a better owner . I feel like she won’t survive since she is so small , and looks so sad I fear depression or neglect will take her . I don’t have the funds to take care of her so I’m desperate, any advice ?

Advice found stray: should i rehome or keep?

1.5k Upvotes

Found an abandoned/stray pup tonight running across the hwy. Almost hit her myself & watched her have near misses w/ other cars. called animal shelter, no answer (it was very late). Thankfully was able to coax her into my car with some treats. Once caught, she didn’t resist being caught in a towel aside from being skittish prior and a bit shaky. She seems healthy, no injuries but her fur shows scissor cuts & her long nails suggest neglect. I’m going to take her to the shelter in the AM so they can see if she has a chip or someone is missing her — but if they aren’t, I would consider keeping her.

(Backstory: had a shitzhu x yorkie for 17 years who passed 3 years ago. I’ve been looking for my next pup for years, but with lots of travel I’ve stuck to dogsitting. Finally, the time is right & I’ve been contacting small/medium dog breeders in the last 6 months).

My question is: I’ve never rescued before, only purchased from breeders. Given that this pup has likely experienced abuse/neglect, would it be irresponsible of me to keep her? I want her to go to the very best home possible, and if that’s not me, that’s okay. I just feel like she might be my spirit pup — a passerby shared that she had been running on the hwy for three hours, he had tried catching her with no luck. She came right up to me and curled up beside me, closing her eyes. We just snuggled for an hour on the floor of my garage. She seems to love leftover christmas turkey 🥹

Any/all advice appreciated! Thanks!

Advice I think I just found my new forever pal.

1.1k Upvotes

I thought after losing my beloved daschund I would never have the nerve to try for another little pal. Well after some research this little fellow astro caught my eye.

He was at a shelter nearby and I decided to go check him out but before I got hung up on him I wanted to check out other dogs first and really think again if this is what I really needed in my life.

I knew I wanted a dog a little bigger in size and slightly older. This little guy is 4 years old.

After looking over all the other dogs. His demeanor and striking look still caught my eye. I asked the shelter worker questions as to why he hasn't been picked yet since he's so beautiful and calm. I would assume his coloring and being a Pembroke Corgi and Australian shepherd mix would make him a no brainer since they're such popular cute breeds.

My only concern was maybe there's something I'm not seeing, as I have cats at home and a 4 year old son (of which has been taught to treat animals with care and caution).

We asked to see him and as soon as we had some time with him I felt something. I didn't want to immediately become attached and still constantly asked questions and get a bigger picture of the dogs past and behavior. From what I observed I really loved, he was patient , kind , and just wanting love and a family.

He came home with me last night and after a much needed brush and bath his true temperament came through. He listened and knew some basic commands stayed by my side at all times knew his name and walked very well on a leash.

Introducing him to the cats wasn't as difficult as I thought as my cats are very welcoming. They puffed up and tried to be intimidating but after one day we were all in harmony.

He is a bit overweight and after some observations I've noticed he's way more interested in human food than his own and is very sneaky and tries to jump to eat human food. That's the only thing I have to work with him on in which I ask of y'all what would be some good advice for breaking this habit.

I will end with this, after one day I believe astro is the best friend who needed a home and family. And I was happy to give him that in exchange for kisses and love !

Advice Meet our rescue puppy mill mom - been here 55 hrs, scared witless

Thumbnail

1.9k Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Last weekend we got our golden rescue, 2 year old puppy mill mom, we've read so much about the 3-3-3 rule, but so far its been 55 hours and she just lies in her corner, absolutely scared witless.

She won't eat, drinks at night (one of us sleeps on the sofa in the same room) and as soon as we make a sound she goes back to her 'bed' and just crawls into herself.

She peed in the house last night because she refuses to go outside, we can't really force her or coerce her because we don't want to frighten too much (she's a big dog so yesterday I had to carry her back inside after trying to get her to be outside).

In the puppy mill she lived on a small field with 5 other dogs and a shed; so she's sort of used to both outside and inside.

Basically all I want to know is if someone has any advice or we just wait it out and continue to try and make her feel as welcome as possible?

Context. Family of 5. Me, wife, 3 boys age 10,7,4. Formerly had two cats. As of early this year, they both passed of old age. Fast forward to now and we just adopted a dog that we will get custody of in a few weeks. She’s a mixed breed, medium? Size. About 30 lbs. About the size of a Beagle. She’s 1.5 years old. We are told she is up to date on vaccinations, spayed, crate and potty trained.

When we visited her she was very nervous and trembling for the first few minutes but then warmed up and just wanted love. She was very calm with boys and us, and within 10 minutes fell asleep on my lap. She didn’t make a sound the entire time, even when a large German shepherd in the hall of the shelter was barking up a storm.

If anyone has any tips on items we need or ideas how to make this transition as smooth as possible please tell me.

To date I’ve bought a collar, leash, harness, crate, two beds(one for crate one for elsewhere in house) and various chew toys.

Advice Rescued bait dog

Hi! So we rescued a bait dog that wandered into our yard from woods last Thursday. Got him into the vet Friday morning and he had busted blood vessels in both eyes, bruised lungs, many open wounds, severely malnourished, ear infection, full of fleas, etc. we got prescribed antibiotics, pain med, nexguard plus and ear meds. We brought him inside after 2 days in the outside kennel and it seems like each day he “resets”. In the morning and most of the day he is super scared of everything. By the evening, he’s eating a lot and being more perky. Next morning, back to being scared again. I’m just wondering if there’s anything I can do to help him or if it just takes time?

I stumbled across this beautiful girl while helping a family member look for a pet from the shelter and I fell in love with her the moment I saw her, I tell most people she ‘tricked’ me, because she stood there calmly with her big ol’ puppy dog eyes staring at me when I saw her and about a week later I took her home with me (she was a year old when I got her) and I figured out quickly she was not house trained in the least (only potty trained). She just about ate up anything she could find that I left laying around and even tore up part of the base board in my apartment and window blinds while leaving her out while I was at work. A neighbor had told me who had experience working with military personnel that she looked part Belgium Malinios and everything clicked (mind you this was almost 4 years ago) I quickly did lots of research and figured out she indeed was, she was intensely high energy and needed a lot of mental stimuli to wear her out I mean A LOT, for the first year I even fed her a fully raw diet & I took it upon myself to train her as best as a I could and actually began to enjoy the process of working with her, I found out how crazy smart she was and within a couple weeks she knew all her commands, over the years there were so many times I contemplated rehoming her and feeling like I couldn’t give here enough, I’m a single 24yo F and just want her to have the absolute best life and til this day it’s something I still struggle with doing it alone, somedays I work 16 hours and will have a family member let her out but for a mixed breed like hers I know she needs more, she’s an amazing running, hiking and biking partner but I can’t give this to her on a daily basis and I do it only when I have the time and energy after multiple work doubles in a row, she’s the greatest motivator a person could ask for but to be completely honest I was not prepared nor had the knowledge of how much work she was going to be when I saw her initially, I was also 22 and longed for a dog of my own for so many years and made an impulsive decision on my part, as much as it would absolutely break my heart giving her up I truly want what’s best for her and want her to get everything she deserves, I learned so much from her and I’m crying just making this post but I need some advice, what would you do??

Advice Unable to Rehome Aggressive Dog and Unsure of What to Do Next

Last week, we decided to once again rescue a dog from a local shelter to add to our home. They advertised her as fine with dogs, and “scared” of cats. Unfortunately, she’s highly aggressive to both, and is now aggressive to my partner. She has made bite contact with my dog, but we’ve prevented her from biting my partner. The shelter won’t take her back, and I’ve contacted over 30 shelters with no luck. We cannot keep her in this house with her new aggression to my partner, let alone to my current pets. I don’t know what to do. We have a behavioral specialist coming later today to do an assessment, but if I’m being honest, I’m afraid they’ll charge me thousands of dollars for a Board and Train that isn’t guaranteed to work.

Some background:
When we brought her home, we did the very slow integration of her into the household (crate rotations between her and my other dog, baby gates, parallel walks, etc.) We also have completely hidden the cats away, with at least two barriers between them at any given time since she displayed extreme aggression when she first saw our cats from her crate. After showing calmness and promise with our dog, we did a short, supervised introduction with our dog. Things were fine, but something snapped in her and she attacked my dog. There was no warning signs like hair raising, showing teeth, or growling. Despite my current dog trying to diffuse, the new dog had to be physically removed and re-crated immediately. We thought perhaps it was because it was in the living room, where her crate (no food) is in the corner. We kept them separate and let things cool back down for a day, continuing with our training, exercise, and decompression time. We tried another short introduction in our yard after a successful parallel walk, and the new dog did it again, completely unprovoked. She didn’t just correct, she full fledged attacked until she was physically removed. Like she was in a trance. We’ve been able to observe this two more times, but were prepared and did not let her get to the biting part, just the lunging. It’s unprovoked every single time, and highly aggressive.

Worse now, she has started to show aggression towards my partner. She has lunged and snarled at him in multiple different scenarios, despite us doing the work to have him participate in the care and feeding of her, all without incident. Unfortunately, we are now too scared to even let her finish the job of biting him to justify our fears.

The shelter said that they cannot take her back, and to rehome her ourselves. Of course, every shelter is over capacity and highly uninterested to take an aggressive dog. No fosters are available. No hits on Adopt A Pet. We are stuck, and I cannot see how we give her a life that isn’t just crated all of the time. I’ve tried reading everything I possibly can to try and help, and I’m hoping the behavior specialist will be of help today.

Advice Abandoned dogs at gas station

Help and advice needed!!! I found these pups at a gas station in sanders Arizona. There is no shelter in that town bc it is sooo small. The brown and black one are either pregnant or just had pups but I don’t see a litter anywhere. The dog in the very last picture is limping BAD. My dilemma is if I should drive back up there and bring them back to a shelter in phoenix. I feel as though they would have a much better chance at being taken care of here, since it’s a big city, and have a roof over their head but at the same time over crowded shelters and the possible E word haunt me. Should I let them get picked up one by one or should I try to bring them back and try to get them adopted or put them in a shelter ?? I can’t tell if they are being taken care of or fed but being pregnant and limping walking around a gas station in this Arizona heat is not a good look. I can’t personally take them in because I have a reactive dog already and we live in an apartment. If anyone has shelter recommendations or knows a good way to get that many dogs in my car or can help me with anything at all I would greatly appreciate it!!

Advice Dumped Puppies - Need Help

Drove home Sunday evening to find these five babies (3 female 2 male) dumped on the side of the road next to my house.

Any thoughts on breed/mix?

I live outside of Huntsville TX and have contacted every shelter and rescue in the greater Houston area.

Every shelter is either full or will not accept them if I do not live in their city/county. We live outside the city limits so there is no animal control or shelter where I live.

I have posted on all social medias and Next Door and the few inquiries I have gotten have fizzled out.

I can’t take care of 5 puppies long term, does anyone have any advice?

One of the only things I can think of is to drive into town and setup the dog pen with free puppy signs and see if I can’t find anyone to adopt them.

I am going to call a vet tomorrow to find out how much all the shots and care will cost which I’m sure they need and may also help them be adoptable. I’m not worried about the money and could still offer them for free adoption.

Right now they are in a dog pen in the garage trying to keep them out of the Texas sun but I think I’m going to need to move it outside and setup some tarps for shade, so that it will make their messes easier to clean and I could make it larger so they have more room. Any thoughts on how to go about this? I’ve got one side of my garage I could put the pen against so one side is always shaded, is surrounded by tall trees, and then think I could run tarp from top of garage out over the pen to ensure it is fully shaded. Very doubtful any chance of rain anytime soon in our area but I think tarp would keep them dry. I’ve also got fans on them now that I could also move outside.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank You

I notice she also won’t eat, which is probably due to fear? Not too sure. Anyway, any advice will help. Thank you.

UPDATE: took her to a shelter by my job BUT was out of jurisdiction so I took her to her registered shelter. She is microchipped but they have no contact information for the owners. Since the supervisor was not in at that time, the front desk lady told me I was not able to bring her home at this time. They will possibly contact me tomorrow regarding fostering while they try and track down the owners. I’d no one has claimed her by the 15th, six days from now, she is all mine.

Thank you all for your advice. I will keep you all posted. She is the sweetest dog and if I can adopt her, she came to me at the most vulnerable time in my life. I lost my brother in a trucking accident in July. So I believe she was meant to be mine. Fingers crossed. Again, thank you all❤️❤️❤️

Advice Dog Rescue Frustration

I have applied for numerous dogs over the last several months with different rescues in NY and NJ without getting any response from most of them. The pups are of various ages and breeds and even when I send a follow up e mail I get crickets. Meanwhile, in a number of cases, the dogs continue to be listed as available. I am retired and have a house with a fenced in back yard and am baffled at what else they could possible be looking for. a friend who used to foster with rescues said it might be that I say 4 hrs a day is approximately the time the dog would be left hime alone. mow some days I am home all day but I do have errands, drs appts and a social life. do these rescues want si eine who will never leave? so many pups presumably needing homes an I get no responses. I am about to give up. anyone who works with rescues have advice?
