Advice Dumped Puppies - Need Help
Drove home Sunday evening to find these five babies (3 female 2 male) dumped on the side of the road next to my house.
Any thoughts on breed/mix?
I live outside of Huntsville TX and have contacted every shelter and rescue in the greater Houston area.
Every shelter is either full or will not accept them if I do not live in their city/county. We live outside the city limits so there is no animal control or shelter where I live.
I have posted on all social medias and Next Door and the few inquiries I have gotten have fizzled out.
I can’t take care of 5 puppies long term, does anyone have any advice?
One of the only things I can think of is to drive into town and setup the dog pen with free puppy signs and see if I can’t find anyone to adopt them.
I am going to call a vet tomorrow to find out how much all the shots and care will cost which I’m sure they need and may also help them be adoptable. I’m not worried about the money and could still offer them for free adoption.
Right now they are in a dog pen in the garage trying to keep them out of the Texas sun but I think I’m going to need to move it outside and setup some tarps for shade, so that it will make their messes easier to clean and I could make it larger so they have more room. Any thoughts on how to go about this? I’ve got one side of my garage I could put the pen against so one side is always shaded, is surrounded by tall trees, and then think I could run tarp from top of garage out over the pen to ensure it is fully shaded. Very doubtful any chance of rain anytime soon in our area but I think tarp would keep them dry. I’ve also got fans on them now that I could also move outside.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank You

It sounds like you're making the best out of it. Hopefully someone else will pop up with some advice. Keep up the hard work for those pups though! 🩵

I’m in NC and not familiar with Texas rescues or shelters but ask vet for a litter rate for deworming and 1st dhlpp vx and ask if they know of any reputable rescue groups or fosters. If you are trying to budget you can get dewormer from Tractor Supply just find out amount to give based on age and weight. Thank you for saving their lives!

They look exactly like three fosters I took in when they were about 10 weeks old, listed as retriever mixes. Adoptions went quickly so I’m hoping yours find homes nearby too.
I think you’re doing a great job already! Tarps are a good plan, maybe a sprinkler over a corner of the inclosure to keep them cool with running water?
Maybe look up foster groups for your area and call them just in case they can be more helpful than a shelter, maybe people will come from further away!
EDIT You are all clearly doing the lords work here telling me they probably have pit in them and not guessing what else, not suggesting ways to help Op manage five puppies, not suggesting who else they can reach out to. News flash they probably have pit and cattle and maybe boxer and maybe etc etc in them. Find a way to help OP vs telling us all something we already know. I specified what MY paperwork as a FOSTER said for puppies that LOOK alike. OP is taking them to a PROFESSIONAL - a VET- for the things we cannot answer. Relax yourselves and say something helpful, donate, make suggestions while OP has their hands full before a vet can add information here

Those are pits, not ‘retrievers’. Be fair to those looking to adopt, hiding the breeds just puts the wrong dogs within the wrong people

Good lord I’m sharing what was on paperwork I personally received as I specified. They probably have a host of things mixed in including pit and whatever else mom and dad of a road side dumped litter was. Op is taking them to a vet who will have a professional opinion. Do you have anything helpful to add?

they're not retrievers, pitt dna is strong here, don't hide that from people it's unethical and they might get dumped again in the future

Thank you for caring!! It sounds like you are in over your head and really need some foster homes asap 🥺🥺 one thing is absolutely certain, is that those 5 little babies would be dead by now if you didn’t rescue them. It’s a long shot but I wonder if you can reach out to the Asher House in Oregon. They do look like lab and pit mixes. That said people frown upon pits. Probably better to just identify them as mutts.

I have a pit mix and she is so much the best girl 💕 she was not listed that way but I tested her and she has really given me a love for the breed

I adopted a “lab mix” that’s really mostly pit, staffy, and bull terrier lmao. Best dog ever, never want to own another non-pit dog ever again.

I find it stupid how people hate Pitts and many other bully breeds. It's basically superstitions like people's large dislike of black cats. Every single species of dog can be great family pets if trained properly and people only hate the breed because they are often used as guard dogs or for dog fights and they can be the sweetest pups. I won't own a bully breed mostly because I don't know how to train them and they're too strong for me to handle when I take them for walks. I'm a rover sitter, and I once watched a pit bull for someone for about a week and he was the sweetest dog ever seen. He was basically a large teddy bear. Owners told me he was an ex fire dog too so he was really great and he even had a lot of tolerance with my overly excited siberian husky that was jumping all over him, trying to play.

Do not set them up in a "free pen" that's 4 dead puppies and one good home.
Most cities in civilization have free programs to get pets their required shots so look into that. I'm surprised no rescue wants to step in. Puppies are easy victories. Those smiles make me want to say they are mixes of whatever is the most popular breed in the area. In my city we sort of assume some kind of pitbull mix. These pups could be anything though. These dogs will go fast if offered for adoption. Maybe contact a rescue and offer to foster while they get adopted. It will happen fast.

💯 agree that giving them away for free to randoms off the street is not gonna end well for these babies ☹️

Haven’t seen enough comments saying this so yes please don’t do the free puppy thing!

I had puppies go up for adoption in late April. I still have one and no applications. Puppies are not going quickly. Adoptions everywhere in my area are slow.
Up until this year, puppies flew off the shelf.

I live in Huntsville and to my knowledge, there are 1/2 price shots on Wednesdays at Rita B Huff Animal Shelter as well as a clinic on weekends at the CVS on 11th.

How sad is that. I wish we could offer the world free puppies to love and it would end well.

It is insurmountably sad and maddening. The levels of casual cruelty humans can inflict on everything around them.
