Calling out /r/unexpectedoutcome for claiming /r/Unexpected is moving there so they can bump up their subscribers.

u/spidersnake Feb 10 '15
They even banned me for asking them questions. The "note from moderators" was simply:
"you may not ask why"
It's crazy, most of the last posts on that sub were made well over a year ago.

u/thekenzo Feb 10 '15
I was banned as well. Same excuse.

u/spidersnake Feb 10 '15
What was up with that canned response of "This is now the new hub for all things unexpected!" being used over and over again?
The guy didn't even put any effort into this supposed take over.

u/sraldleif Feb 10 '15
It almost has a cult-like vibe to it
31
u/DuBistMeinSofa Feb 10 '15
Yeah it's weird, all of the all-time top posts have upvotes in the hundreds but every last one was posted by one of the mods, u/APPARENTLY_HITLER. Seems to be creating his own little fantasy realm over there. Haha

Anyone care to explain this? Is this really some redditautomagic?
18
u/MarkGruffallo Feb 10 '15
u/ensign_paris, You are fined 1 Credit for a violation of the Verbal Morality Statute.
11
u/ensign_paris Feb 10 '15
Damn. I admit guilt. how do i pay? is it sufficient if i send you my credit card number via private message?

u/Tray2daC Feb 10 '15
I actually find that kind of hilarious, but then again, I also love Demolition Man.

u/SometimesIArt Feb 10 '15
Hijacking the top comment to say do NOT go visit the subreddit and if you did, go back and unsubscribe yourself. The assholes coded an auto-sub where if you visit the subreddit, you're automatically subscribed. Fucking assholes.

u/vxx Feb 11 '15
It's a bannable offense. Talk to the admins about it.

u/SometimesIArt Feb 11 '15
Well I sent them a message but so should everyone else so that it gets lots of exposure

This is so sad. It's not even like they are trying to do anything new with their subreddit.

u/EggheadDash Feb 10 '15
Why would you do this?

u/Random_Link_Roulette Feb 10 '15
Pissed off at the sub, trying to steal the subees

u/ninja_in_camo64 Feb 10 '15
I ... I think they're called subscribers.

It's funny how far people will go for worthless Internet points.
19
u/salacious_c Feb 10 '15
I was just going to ask- who the fuck cares? Why are there ads for subreddits? What does being the mod of a popular sub get you in real life?
19
u/Royal-Al Feb 10 '15
I've heard that some mods of the most popular default subreddits can get paid to suppress and manipulate certain content from undisclosed sponsors.
15
u/salacious_c Feb 10 '15
Yeah, I remember the whole /adviceanimals scandal. I guess I keep forgetting how much traffic those subs get and even subtle manipulation could throw a lot of traffic to third parties.
4
u/fishchunks Feb 10 '15
Being involved in a community you like and want others to be passionate aboyr. Plus you can influence stuff in your community
7
u/EtsuRah Feb 10 '15
I agree with your overall point. But I think ads for subreddits is really cool. It introduces new subs and it keeps advertising in-house as opposed to advertising that Game of War app or whatever else.

5
Feb 10 '15
Well that is probably not about the points as much as it's about getting the power over a potentially pretty big subreddit.
5
Feb 10 '15
Points are the useless but users are valuable. Mod of r/adviceanimals that pushed for allowing only quickmeme links, a site which he owned, made millions util he was discovered. Mod of r/trees also pushed some of his stuff using the sub.

Is this not something that is against the global rules of Reddit? Could action not be taken against the offending mods or the entire subreddit itself?

Just thought you guys should know this sub will be auto-redirecting to r/stopmakingupfakestoriesforfreekarmaandalsothissubusedtobequityourbullshitjustgettingsomekinkystuffworkedout soon.

u/TheChance Feb 10 '15
A thread linking to this thread has just been deleted over there, along with any other reference to this - except for the mod's mad "announcement".
This is fascinating.

u/m-p-3 Feb 12 '15
And I'm banned for calling the bullshit as well.
Oh noooo, I can't visit this sub anymore? What a tragedy!

It's pretty obvious that they are just trolling when you read the thread making the announcement. The moderator's responses to legitimate questions had me in stitches. Reading through it cheered me up on a crappy day.
EDIT: Wow. I'm sorry that reading that thread cheered me up on an otherwise horrible day. It seems that some redditors were offended by my brief moment of laughter.

As a mod of r/UnexpectedOutcome, AMA
Edit: And I'm not personally offended, but if you look at the comments in the stickied thread of r/UnexpectedOutcome you can clearly see the downvote brigade that is r/QuitYourBullshit. Remember guys, "this subreddit is not a downvote brigade".
15
u/TheChance Feb 10 '15
Has it occurred to you that perhaps some of the not-quite-14,000 subscribers (and dropping!) are responsible for most of those downvotes?
You've left a number of us hanging vis-a-vis how we even became subscribed to that sub. Was it almost-active a couple of years ago, and we've all just forgotten about it?
At any rate, you guys are both moderators of 20+ other subs, some of which are, you know, real - and this goes beyond "not instilling a great deal of confidence" and ventures into "outright alarming" territory.
What are you even thinking, presenting the impression that you're both having some kind of mental break on a sub that 100% of subscribers had forgotten about? What impression do you expect to leave, when a subreddit we don't recognize pops up on our front page informing us that a subreddit we do recognize is relocating there, only to respond to all comments with rude "jokes"?
I really doubt that either of you will have any credibility among other moderators by this time tomorrow.
7
u/shithandle Feb 10 '15
Exactly. I do not remember subbing to that at all, and now its in my feed? Really weird.

I apologize if subscribers of our sub are downvote brigading you. We try (emphasis on try) to minimize the effects of downvote brigading, but at the end of the day--reddit is reddit, and once you're a target (rightfully or wrongfully so), there's not much that can be done.
-4
u/ILLITERATE_HOBO Feb 11 '15
Yeah I understand, I obviously don't blame the moderation for this, and I really don't care at all, I was just hoping to encourage people to think about the rules (or request) before downvoting.
