QUESTION Remember that time an employee committed suicide in a store?

I remember a few years ago an 18 year old employee at a store in Tampa had committed suicide inside a bathroom within the store. They shut the store down for a few hours to clean up the corpse and then expected people to continue working their shift. It’s just so crazy to me how people truly and sincerely convince themselves that a company as large as this one would ever pretend to care about its employees to any degree when they do things like that after the death of an employee of theirs.

QUESTION Is there a new headphone policy?

So within the past week apparently my store manager said that we cannot have airpods/headphones in at all before/after closing hours. Was confused because I thought the rule only stipulated while we are open? If we can't do that anymore I am gonna be majorly disappointed, jamming to tunes while organizing, cleaning, and throwing what is left of the grocery truck was one of the little victories I could get here.

BLEED GREEN The deli is a beast unmatched

I have been working in the deli since july and it has been an experience for sure.. i read the horror stories and stuff and even my store managers have told me that it is the most difficult department to work in, specifically the kitchen. Id say it might be up there with grocery because i cant even begin to comprehend what kind of entity that is. The grocery managers always seem out of breath.

Ive only ever worked in restaurants, which is probably why i was sorted into the deli. Funny thing about my store is that they also want me to work produce so i will do that every once in a while and it feels like a vacation. I will say at least my deli operates just like any restaurant and i feel like i enjoy working in it. The pay definitely leaves room for desire, but it is actually the best for any "starter job" in my area. The stories werent lying though, they really do test our limits and allow the system to create impossible demands, and the customers get extremely angry at my location. They will pout, cross their arms, snap, and yell. Nothing i havent seen before but still pretty obnoxious. I am grateful that they dont control my paycheck like they would with table service. Those are the same people to be like "how much of a tip do you think you deserve ???" Or you make one mistake and they give you zero dollars. It is so nice to just be able to walk away and forget about them. If they have some bs to say they can take it to a manager.

I recently started in the kitchen and it is insane. Its pretty chill on normal days but like i mentioned, our system is terrible and there are days where the kitchen is expected to perform impossible tasks. Even up front the online orders, closing duties, and customer lines push the limit every weekend it seems. I like our store manager though and shes helped me out when i needed it. I want to know how the deli has been treating everyone here 😁😁

RANT Seniors getting dropped off

Does anyone else work in cs at a store that has seniors dropped off several days a week from retirement homes? It causes a huge burden on labor and they’re lowkey wild. I feel for them so we schedule extra when they come two days a week but shouldn’t these facilities have people that go with them and help them instead of dropping them off warzone style

QUESTION What do you do if you have a manager that texts all day and gives morale-flattening preferential treatment to his manager friend’s daughter?

We have a manager at our store that is on his phone during a significant portion of his shift. Walk in the back? Texting. Go in the walk-in? Texting. In his office? Texting. At the cheese case? Texting. I watch this man straight staring at his phone as he’s crossing the floor. You can see enough of the phone that it’s definitely texting and not Publix Pro. He also does pretty pointless busywork to enable this texting habit, such as writing what item is in a box even though they’re all labeled. I have people in other departments also noticing it due to how little he even tries to hide it.

Also, he’s friends with a manager at another store and her daughter works in our department. She got full-time after a few months and has barely been with Publix a year, just turned 20, acts like she runs the department, and follows this manager around like a puppy and gets blatant favorable treatment. She is very open about how much her and the manager in question text each other. 4 open shifts and a close that leads into a day off. We have much more senior full-timers who frequently get 2-4 closes a week and others who routinely get a close followed by a mid followed by an open. We have part-time college kids who have worked there a few months getting better schedules than the full-timers.
Most of the department has complained about it, but this (assistant) manager has been best friends with the department manager for something like 10 or 15 years so nothing gets done.

Training for full-timers seeking management is being held up until this girl is ready to receive her training. Morale is terrible. We just had 3 people quit, several others just do the minimum to get by, and a few others are looking to transfer. We just got 2 transfers in and one of them is already looking for the door. Everyone in the department feels this way, yet it persists. We are tired of having to pick up so much slack.

Is this something I should talk to someone about or is my department cooked? Advice is appreciated!

DISCUSSION Distribution experience

• Upvotes

This may be one of the worst job experiences I've had and it's surprising because everyone I talk to praises Publix. I worked in a frozen warehouse for a few months and my god the management was incompetent as can be and the training was lackluster at best. For the first week I trained with a trainer for about 5 hours then they pulled the trainer to go work and had me sweep the dock. Day after day id have a trainer for 2-3 hours then sweep the dock for the rest of a 10 hour shift. Then they extended mine and another person's training to account for them not being able to have trainers stay with us then repeated the same process to the point where my first three weeks were "training" and 70% of it was me cleaning. After that they push and push for you to meet the percentage and then tell you "listen to your body go warm up you have 60 minutes of time a day" and if you do, it plummets your percentage. Everyone that works there cuts each other off on equipment and pulls in front of you because they're all percentage too and thus you're competing with your coworkers but it's masked as "we're a family" and having that shoved in our face while actively being thrown into a competition. Absolutely ridiculous company and I wouldn't recommend anyone to work there

QUESTION Medical leave as new part timer

Was just involved in a car accident two days ago. Went to ER and got cleared but they did find herniated discs in my lower back and I have papers stating so. More appointments for the physical therapy and in a lot of pain.

I just started part time at this publix earlier this month. No idea what to do. Im fine with unpaid leave but I dont want to get fired. Already called out twice. Is there medical leave I can take where they cannot fire me during it? I am in so much pain.

Thanks

QUESTION Publix workers of reddit, I have a question!!

I recently applied for a job at Publix and was wondering how long it took for Publix to get back to you. I’ve waited about a week and haven’t gotten a text message or an email even though I consented to being sent them. Is this normal or have I done something wrong? If my application wasn’t accepted will they let me know or just never send anything?

CUSTOMERS Steamed Fried Foods

The Publix closest to me (Lake Miriam in Lakeland) was recently renovated and no longer has a person tending tenders. They're all put into paper bags where they steam and the breading sloughs off. It sucks and I hate it. This applies to everything fried. It all ends up soggy.
