Mod Post What is relevant to personality disorders

This post will cover why we will not allow posts discussing DID, astrology, or MBTI without clear reference to a personality disorder or other personality theories backed by science. To skip to this section, scroll towards the bottom of this post.

It seems there is a lot of confusion about what personality disorders are and are not. Many of the posts to this subreddit are off-topic and discussing disorders or symptoms that have little to do with personality disorders so I think we should clear some things up.

Personality disorders are patterns of behavior brought about through childhood development that cause an individual to behave in a way that may be harmful to themselves or others. These may be the direct result of how they were treated by parents and peers, or the result of genetic factors; often both.

Personality disorders recognized by the DSM-V are as follows (with a very superficial depiction):

Paranoid—feelings of suspicion towards others and sensitivity to potential threats and slights

Schizotypal—atypical beliefs, appearance, and behaviors, and discomfort with creating social connections

Schizoid—appears to have a flat affect and limited interest in relationships and many activities

Antisocial—disregard for the rights of others, lack of empathy and guilt, impulsivity, and manipulation of others

Narcissistic—fantasies of success, power, and attractiveness, feeling special when compared to others, struggles to place self in the shoes of others (may present with grandiosity or with deep insecurity)

Borderline—strong reactions to real or perceived abandonment by others, emotionally turbulent, impulsivity, and self sabotage (SH, upending relationships and employment, making relationships with people who are harmful to them, etc), and lacking a sense of stable identity

Histrionic—superficial relationships that are perceived as significant but may be fleeting, seeks the attention of others (whether positive or negative), stretches the truth or fabricates information or stories about themselves or others, easily influenced by others (molds into their social situation), and often behaves theatrically

Dependent—difficulty making decisions (even little ones) independently, lacks confidence in their independence, takes on the opinions of others as their own (struggles to disagree or hold their own opinion), endures unpleasant experiences to maintain relationships. (May present as a need to depend on others or as a need to have others depend on them).

Avoidant—sensitivity to rejection or criticism, isolated but desires close relationships, fears not being liked by others and may avoid situations in which they are not sure they will meet approval, anxiety about new situations, chronic trouble with self-esteem

Obsessive compulsive—need to be in control of tasks or situations, inflexible and rigid in opinions and actions, struggles to let go of projects and participate in leisurely activities, fails to finish tasks when they cannot reach perfection, stingy with money and belongings even with close relationships and family in need.

There are other personality disorders theorized by Theodore Millon, the father of personality disorders. These may not be recognized by other official bodies as some of these symptoms may be related to other conditions such as bipolar disorder, major depression, or they may be more of a subtype or mixed personality disorder. More information and research is certainly needed here. These other personality disorders are as follows:

Melancholic—believes sadness and defeat are inevitable, accepts punishment and volatility towards themselves and others, perceived helplessness

Turbulent—impulsive in seeking out new opportunities for life fulfillment without regard for safety or reasonable limits, perpetually seeking to pursue activities and interests, uncomfortable with moments of passivity (downtime, rest, even emotional stagnation towards an activity), and mood may fluctuate between extreme positivity and hopelessness.

Sadistic—seeks to control and hold power over their environment and other people, expresses inner pain by inflicting upon others

Negativistic—resentful, seeks to meet their own needs, conflict between perceived selfishness and gaining respect, perception that others are more fortunate

Masochistic—protects self from distress by seeking pain, may believe suffering is inevitable or that it is strength, subjects themselves to their ‘negative fate’, believes they are undeserving of positive treatment

https://millonpersonality.com/diagnostic-taxonomy/

By Millons conception, everyone falls into these base patterns of behavior by way of their life circumstances and experiences. However, most people may not have a level of severity that would constitute a disorder (a system of symptoms that disrupts functioning in one or more areas of life). You may very well see family and friends, even yourself in these patterns. This may be because of the behavioral pattern moreso than a disorder. Only a qualified professional can determine if you have a personality disorder and which one you may have.

These disorders are diagnosed through a combination of interview, questionnaires, and formal assessment tools.

It may be helpful to learn about one’s own traits as this can guide an individual to identify their treatment options, however, an individual cannot reasonably self-diagnose these disorders (especially as those with these disorders may be prone to a lack of insight prior to treatment).

The goal of treatment is to reduce harm to the individual and to their peers when necessary. Treatment may be successful at changing adaptive strategies and reducing the severity of symptoms so that an individual can become functional in ways they previously were not. There is no known “cure” for personality disorders.

Treatment may include a regimen of medications, CBT, DBT, and other methods of therapy. There is research supporting other interventions such as ECT especially for those with BPD.

Now that we have clarified personality disorders a little bit, let’s address some of the common misconceptions about personality disorders we see on this subreddit.

MBTI—this tool was not created by those educated in the field of psychology or psychiatry. This tool does not stand up to scientific scrutiny as it is subject to fluctuation with mood and other external influences. This is not related to personality disorders and on its own will be removed from this subreddit.

DID (previously MPD)—this deserves a post on its own, but we will just focus on relationship to personality disorders. DID and other dissociative disorders are concerned first and foremost with dissociation. DID is not the presence of multiple full personalities or personality disorders (especially when an individual mistakes interests or mood for personality). Content insinuating otherwise will be removed for misinformation. Personality disorders are not on their own related to dissociative disorders. Without a clear and descriptive connection to personality disorders, content related to this separate condition will be removed for being off-topic.

Astrology—This is more akin to spiritual belief and has no bearing on scientific understanding. This has no bearing on personality disorders and will be treated as off-topic.

Tuplas—this is a spiritual concept in Tibetan Buddhism and will be considered a religious idea and not on-topic for this subreddit similar to other religious conversation unrelated to personality disorders.

Interests—interests vary between people based on their social groups, economic status, exposure, and other incidental factors. Interests such as hobbies, ideologies, or participation in activities may be influenced by one’s personality, but do not themselves constitute a personality.

Individuality—natural variation between individuals does not constitute a personality or difference in personality. Personality is determined by one’s pattern of behavior. Other things such as political stances, employment, economic status, religion, cultural identity, etc. vary between all people and are not determined by one’s personality.

Mood—moods, do not constitute personality or personality traits. Moods shift in all people for various reasons and these often change one’s thinking temporarily. If a personality is a climate, mood is equal to weather. We must look at the bigger picture, traits and behaviors over time rather than a picture at one point in time.

If you have any questions or concerns, please either comment here or message modmail.

What Should I Do I'm not trying to say I have bipolar, but I just want to ask to see if anyone knows a bit about it (TW SH)

So I've been questioning this for awhile (I also have autism but I don't think it's that, could be but it feels different) it feels like most days I wake up severally depressed, not being able to look in mirrors, struggling to bathe and brush my teeth, and I can sometimes sh again for no apparent reason, but sometimes I wake up all stress, or I can't even sleep because I've been crying the entire night, I don't know much about bipolar but I understand the main sort of system, I think this could also be OCD perhaps, and some lucky days I just feel free and chill, I can also get spontaneous, not like "oh I guess I'll climb a tree" like I signed into a modeling agency the other day, because I wanted to feel something, I just have no clue what this is, PTSD?? Depression?? I don't know but I wanted to know if anyone had any ideas, I'm tired of this

Diagnosed My struggle with Borderline Personality Disorder

I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder at the age of eighteen by a psychiatrist while at the St. Luke's behavioral health unit in Sioux City. At the time, I had been showing some very obvious signs which were leading up to it. By the way, I had been placed in psychiatric care three other times before that which was during my senior year of high school. About a couple weeks before I had turned eighteen, the school-based therapist from Plains Area had referred me to Eagle View Behavioral Health in Bettendorf. Then about two months after that, I had been sent to UnityPoint in Waterloo until I finished off my senior year with yet another hospitalization which resulted in me having to graduate from high school two weeks early and I didn't even get to walk at the graduation ceremony. This time, I went to Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls which was out of state. All in all, I have had a total of three psychiatric inpatient trips and that was just in the second semester of my senior year. By the way, I graduated in the year 2022. With that in mind, I had a total of seven inpatient trips in just that year alone. As a matter of fact, I have been sent to inpatient fifteen times within the last five years (not counting my many trips to the local emergency room and also having to live at a residential treatment facility in Mason City for four months). Still to this day, I am struggling to figure out what exactly started all of it in the first place.

Diagnosed I hate everyone. (a vent?)

are we even allowed to vent here idk i just need to get this out and don't know where to put it.

everyday i'm filled with so much hatred and anger inside me and it only gets worse. the violent urges get worse and i just become more irritable. even just someone looking at me wrong or speaking to me in the wrong tone can make me want to lash out. i'm so tired of masking myself, i'm so tired of performing, i can't stand anyone. i can't relate to anyone nor do i want to and when someone actually catches my attention it turns out to just be obsession and i eventually don't feel a thing towards them. i feel like i'm this 🤏 close to not being able to function in society. i don't even want to function in society anymore i'm so exhausted. i feel like i'm losing control over myself and the disdain i have for other people does not help. the distractions can only do so much. no one notices because on the outside i'm viewed as such a sweet and nice girl other than the very few people who have seen the real me.

i was diagnosed with BPD + NPD more recently and it just confused me and irritated me further. i wanted an evaluation finally done to find out why i don't feel empathy, why i have no remorse, why i'm so manipulative, why i lie so much, why the words "i'm sorry" and "i love you" mean nothing to me, why i'm so selfish, why i'm so callous, why everything i do is so transactional, why i'm so violent and a ball of hatred and anger. but i left it feeling mischaracterized, misunderstood, and more confused. i couldn't resonate with half the things the psychologist said to me. is it because i don't understand myself or i struggle to be fully honest? i am 24 years old and for years i lied to professionals just so they would give me what i want, and here i am. it has set me back so much and it only gets worse.

Other Good creators who make content about ASPD?

Hey everyone! I don't have ASPD myself, but I am autistic and very interested in the topic. I find video content that portrays ASPD in a thoughtful way to be very hard to come across, as are creators who aren't leaning into a gimmick of some kind. So, if theres any pages I should check out to get personal thoughts and explanations, please let me know.

Seeking Answers About Myself Idk if I have PPD or not

It's a thought that's been consuming me for too long, but I don't know if it's from watching too much TikTok or if I actually have it, especially since people don't usually self-diagnose it. I am literally now placing my trust in you to help me, which is contradictory and confuses me even more.

Just to clarify; PPD (Paranoid Personality Disorder) is to live with a pervasive, long-term pattern of distrust and suspicion of others without adequate or rational reason Constantly believe that people are trying to demean, deceive, exploit, or threaten you

You see, I often think that many people secretly hate me; it's not everyone, and not all the time, but sometimes it's the first thought that comes to mind, and it's unavoidable. The thing is, with this condition, people tend to take it to extremes, thinking "a dog wants to kill me." But in my case, it's usually with acquaintances or strangers And it doesn't happen always. It usually occurs when I perceive something that seems "suspicious," so to speak. . However, I still have two people whom I entrust everything It happens to me. That's why I doubt having it or not. Although this problem is especially with a certain person, I think everything she does is because she hates or envys me. She excludes me, she avoids me. I can assure you she has something against me, but I'm so obsessed with the idea that anything (even breathing) is because she hates me that I It overwhelms me everytime. The thing is, she's from my "close circle of friends" so every time she gets close I tend to isolate myself because I know it's better that way; So that she doesn't use me. I tend to hate certain people less (not always though) when she's not around. But I don't want to be misunderstood; I don't hate everyone, but when she's not around my day is better, the conversations are calmer. I swear she has a grudge against me, and maybe that's the case and I dont actually have this condition, that's why I'm asking. This person has been my "friend" for a long time, and she makes me suffer. She's the main reason I think I'm going through this (though not the only one). I don't know if the PPD It's with everyone all the time (if that's the case, then I don't think I suffer from it), but the fact that I always think that's people using me or that any whisper is definitely about me hurts my relationships. I need proof that whatever they're doing isn't connected to me, so I can have peace of mind. I don't live in constant fear or hate everyone ñ, but I can't avoid the thought of "It's something negative about me" when it happens. I also hold grudges and find it difficult to apologize or forgive others if I don't consider it "sincere". I also argue a lot. But again, it's not with everyone or all the time; it happens often, and it tends to be repetitive with some people. Do you think I have this condition? If so, what should I do? I'm not sure if seeing a professional is the best option for me right now. Sorry if the text is long, but I had to express myself.

So, I’m currently with a psychiatrist and we’ve are suspecting I might have Aspd, she has told me that a clinical psychologist will make me a personality test.
What should I expect? At the test I’m going to be honest, and do the best that I can.
Does anyone have done a similar test? How is it like? What kind of test is it?
Any advice it’s more than welcome

I Need Help I need help

What could it mean when I feel these things? I find myself wanting people to pay attention to me and care for me more, though I don’t understand why.

If my mother spends more time with my brother one day, or talks to him more than she does to me, I feel hurt and angry inside. I end up becoming irritable even when I don’t mean to and I start thinking that she prefers him, that she doesn’t love me enough, and that she ought to look down on him and choose me instead wanting to be with me, do things with me, and talk to me.

I don’t know why, but I sometimes feel the urge to ask my mother or father, "Do you love me?" I expect them to say yes, but I don’t even know why I ask. With my friends, I want them to chat with me and take an interest in me; if I see them talking to others, I feel hurt and a bit sad. I can’t help but think that they prefer those other friends over me, and that I’m just being a nuisance.

When it comes to a boyfriend, I feel like he doesn’t truly like me that he thinks I’m ugly, or that he won’t find me attractive if he sees me naked. I worry that I talk on the phone too much and am being intrusive. If he’s talking to other women, I feel furious and jealous; I assume he likes them and wants to sleep with them, and that he no longer cares for me.

If we’re talking on the phone, my entire day revolves around it I want to talk to him almost constantly. If I notice he sounds a bit cold or tired, I immediately jump to conclusions: he doesn’t like me anymore, or he must have another girl. I think, "He’s a piece of trash, a total cheater!" I feel like no one ever likes me, that no one wants me, and it really hurts. I’ll wait to see if he texts me, but when he doesn’t, I end up feeling sad and angry, and my whole day is ruined.

At school, I want all my teachers to think I’m the best student; if they don’t, I feel hurt deep down I don’t feel "good enough." I crave their compliments and want them to believe I’m truly excellent. I also want all my classmates to adore me and want to be my friends; otherwise, I feel like I’m worthless, that no one wants me, and that I’m completely alone.

At home, if I get into an argument with my relatives, I scream, cry uncontrollably, and hurl harsh insults at them I even tell them I hope they die. Sometimes, I’ll say things like, "Leave me alone, or I’ll commit sui*ide I want to die, I hate you all!" I don’t actually want to do that not at all but for some reason, the words just come out; I don’t know why.

Afterward, I lock myself in my room and cry. Sometimes I punch my wardrobe or my own thighs, and I bite my arms. Eventually, the feeling passes for me, but my family stays angry and hurt by my behavior for a long time. I don’t understand what’s wrong with me?

I also feel ugly and fat. I compare myself to other girls and think they’re so much prettier than I am. I feel embarrassed for even wanting a boy’s attention, because I tell myself that other girls are better than me, that I’m pathetic, and that I’ll never be the person I want to be. I can’t even stick to a diet for four months I can’t seem to do anything to improve myself, and I honestly just don’t like who I am at all.

(Yes, I have an appointment with some professionals next week, but I wanted to hear your thoughts thank you.)

I Need Help This disorder is going to kill me (ASPD)

When I was 10 years old I had a serious issue with one of my moms boyfriends. I felt inferior and hated how much she gave him attention, she visited him instead of me for Christmas. I lied and said that he touched me and got him locked up. I was 10.

I got put into foster care so I was put into a foster family. They had so much more money than my bio family and they bought me whatever I wanted as long as I cried about my mom being in prison. When I was adopted at 14 she picked me up in her arms and sobbed that I was finally her child and I gave my saddest fake cry (which was absolutely horrible by the way, nothing came out of my eyes. I couldnt even make my face red.)

I cut my adoptive family off about 4 months ago, just blocked them on everything and started living my life alone. I cut off all my friends too, ones Ive had for years. I just did it for freedom.

I have a partner who is deeply in love with me. They want to spend every moment with me and every single night I have the same thought of running away. Just disappearing without a trace. I can't stop thinking about it

I can't hide my intentions anymore like I used to. I used to be able to charm people, I was very extroverted in a way but now when people talk to me I don't even have the energy to fake it so I just move on. I'm doing the same thing to my partner now. I don't want to run away but I have this urge that keeps increasing in exigency every night.

I get such a rush when I do something illegal or pull something off. It gives me life in a way. I severely struggle with controling my impulses when it comes to life descisions. It got me homeless TWICE, I was homeless for 6+ months. Every time I get power or somewhere in life where I want to be it feels empty, I like surviving. I like the puzzles it gives me, and a part of me wants to run away again even though I know its not logical.

I do stupid stunts that almost get me killed, I crave violent situations. I purposely seek out parts of the city that is the least friendly towards my race and I enjoy the distress it causes them. I get a rush when someone threatens me or has blinded hatred. I purposely seek out arguments and distress because it makes me feel alive. I'm not even suicidal I just like the rush of being in danger. I feel the most alive when theres someone threatening me online or in person, its going to get me killed one day. I've had the cops called on me so many times, ive been tresspassed ive had the shit kicked out of me but theres absolutely nothing on this earth like the feeling of confrontation.

I always use the phrase "I care because I live" because its true, you can't care if you're dead.

I can't control any of my impulses. I've done so much worse than anything listed in this post, I just wanted to get some of this out. I am driven by a feeling of emptiness that only feels better when I'm close to losing everything. Stuck in a forever loop of impuslivity and recklessness. I cant even bother getting close to people anymore and once I lose my partner to either my impulses or their dignity comes back I'm cooked.

Is there medication?? Is there anything? A part of me wants to get out of this cycle and have a meaningful life and the other part loves the rush.

What Should I Do Sudden change in perspective/emotion of personality disorder patient

I'm sorry this post will be long but something quite bizarre has happened to me and I would really appreciate any insight. The tag is also not quite correct but as close as the options gave me.

I am in my late 30s and recently started to realise I have at least strong features of BPD and some of NPD and HPD. Various people (including doctors) have suggested I might have BPD, but I do not currently have access to psychiatry for a diagnosis. I am diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, but I question this now. I played some aspects of ASD up in order to get a diagnosis.

However, something very strange has happened. I have suddenly shifted my perspective on my whole life so it's no longer through a personality disordered lens. My mind has, over the course of weeks, become very very different.

I can see the suffering I've caused other people and that I am to blame for it; I've not realised this before. I've suddenly realised I have wasted all opportunities and money I've ever had. I do not feel any anger, having been overcome with anger for my whole life. I also have developed an extreme aversion to any sort of hatred, violence, or even hedonism even though these things were most of my life a few months ago. I used to enjoy horror films. Last night, I remembered a scene from a horror film that I really enjoyed at the time, and started panicking. My political views and opinions have changed.

Many things about me do remain the same: many of my interests are the same, and I am still anxious and impulsive.

I cannot find any record of a sudden personality change like this. Is this actually unprecedented? It did not coincide with therapy, head injury, or any major life event. It has caused me to become extremely self-hating and depressed. The only odd thing that coincides was a stomach bug, and since that (now months ago), I have had no appetite and had to force myself to eat even a minimal amount.

I realise that people will likely advise me to go to a doctor but this will be incredibly difficult for a number of reasons. But I would love to know if there is anything remotely similar recorded. It would also be helpful to know this because I doubt a doctor would believe any of this if I told them.

What Should I Do Hello what do I do

I have autism and ADHD and OCD.

I do get very distressed from thoughts however when I punched a wall and I saw blood I thought I like this I like the thrill of punching wall and beating myself up. And it makes me feel like I'm doing something to protect myself from hurting others. I get homicidal thoughts and I get violent images that go through my mind when I feel angry. They are internal images and I rarely go out to speak with others I find others are stupid and down right awful people(maybe that is contempt) maybe people aren't down right awful. I have shame about it how they will not like me for the real me and I have attention seeking behaviors of making other laugh complimenting others devaluing other telling others that they are annoying cunts and that they are a problem. And I have a thrill in saying that. When I was at work I never wanted to be there I always complained and felt really angry with others talking about sexual and joking about sexual stuff and I felt really intense rage and really frustrated like you talk about sex and I don't feel comfortable with talking about sex. I didn't like being told to go in to work I felt extremely distressed in having responsibilities and wasn't really present. I have trust issue I see a coworker or stranger and I don't trust them and I see them as a bad person sometimes as an object just floating by (I know they aren't and human are more complex) and that also give me a thrill and like when im aware of that I want that to be abolished and I feel like that is disrespecting me. And I feel super inferior unless I'm doing something I think I'm good at, and I don't notice enjoyment in games playing Minecraft and walking, plus I don't go outside because I'm afraid I'll start stalking someone and I also have that feeling of it would be a thrill to stalk someone and I have urges to follow people so I just don't interact with anyone because I don't want those urges. But I can choose whether or not I do it.

And when I notice something changed it a threat and also when it environment I feel much calmer

What Should I Do Diagnosed with bpd for 4 years and it was all a lie.

I don’t have bpd and this is something i’m 100% sure about.
I understand why i got diagnosed with it. I lied about most of it and they fell for it.
I have a whole team of psychiatrists and none of them ever suspected anything. I loved masking it up. Lying manipulating them into believing things i don’t really have.
I also sh and have an ed. I think this confirmed it for them.
The reason behind these are different from bpd reasonings.

I sh to get enjoyment from seeing blood and fat ( i don’t enjoy the pain, and i don’t even feel it i damaged my nerves because i’ve been doing get for +10 years) Sometimes i do it because of my homicidal thoughts (to stop myself from harming others). I have an ed because i have gender dysphoria.

Now i feel bored af and it got to me that i don’t even know who i am and never really cared about my disorder. I would like to have a better understanding of myself and behaviors. I’m sure i have something because of my violent tendencies. Manipulations. No having remorse, empathy and guilt.

I don’t know if this is a good idea and how do i even do it. So many things i said were based on lies just to get me feeling something and to test my abilities.

What should i do in this situation?

I Need Help Saving my mother from suicide amplified my sociopathic traits

I’m not officially diagnosed but my psychologist says i have traits that might suggest sociopathy/malignant narcissism, and i wanna know what’s happening.

A few weeks ago i heard commotion in the hallway and saw my mother standing on the window threatening my brother she’d jump. I pulled her inside and yelled at her. Seeing her so helpless and pathetic all i wanted to do was kick her in the ribs. I told her “you’re fucking crazy” and went back to my room. In that moment i felt annoyed, but detached. It was crazy to witness but i wasn’t really sad or felt like crying.

These days have been unbearably boring, it makes me feel like smashing things, hurting people. I can’t stand anybody, the presence of certain people makes me nauseous, their mere movements like adjusting their clothes piss me off so bad.
I wish i could entertain myself like i used to, maybe by creating drama, getting back with my ex or something, anything. But i truly don’t even feel like it, it’s too much effort, i don’t wanna interact with anyone, much less put in the effort to “manipulate” them.

I’ve always kinda let people know people not to come to me if they’re looking for empathy or compassion, because they’re not going to get it. Probably stems from my mother using me as a therapist, expecting me to help her with adult issues as a child.

What do i do to get my spark back? Lol

About a Loved One Once someone is diagnosed with a personality disorder, is that diagnosis for life?

Like say some employment hinges on your diagnosis of having a personality disorder. That person is in their mid 20’s. Can they see another professional and get UN-diagnosed with a personality disorder? Especially if they just had unresolved childhood trauma at the time of diagnosis? Or is the diagnosis for life?

What Should I Do Dating with ASPD?

19 years old and about 6 months off my ASPD diagnosis. Been very content on my own up until now but recently watching everyone around me in happy romantic relationships I am starting to crave one for myself. I’ve technically dated a couple of girls in the past but they crashed and burned miserably as I really did not care whatsoever and it was mostly just to fit in but now I find myself wanting something more legitimate. Was wondering everyone’s opinions on the morality of dating with ASPD. In the event I do find a girl when/do I tell them about this. Also if anyone knows a place where I can meet people like me to date I feel like finding a girl with my same situation would make it much easier. Appreciate any help and responses.
