Ward 1, The City Begins With A Joke.

It's official, this will be Luloff's final run as city councillor as having now been elected to a third term, he will be able to use that with his military career to move onto the Provincial or Federal scene as he had previously planned to do before. Not even a DUI can stop this machine, only slow it down. It was only fitting that his election party was held at a bar. I wonder how many drivers left there last night that might've been over 80 (0.08%) or in the 0.05 - 0.79 range? Cheers, everyone should get themselves a drink because we are the ones paying the tab.

Eligible voters numbers are incorrect

There’s no way that over 850,000 of the 1.064 million residents of Ottawa are eligible to vote. I don’t know where they got those numbers from but they are wrong. I am a letter carrier for Canada Post. I delivered 6 to 8 voter envelopes to each household and that week there was an incredible amount of RTS. Meaning the people had either moved or they no longer live there. Even the house I currently live in since 2023 received six other names that don’t even live here. When I show up to vote, when they crossed out my name from my address, I saw those six other names on the list. So sure, maybe at some point they existed but it’s outdated. So if over 350,000 people voted, I’d say it’s a pretty good turnout

Looking for... Family Neighbour neglects dogs. What can I do.

I should probably be asking somebody else for advice, but I need some extra direction for this. My mom has called (or so she claims) 3-5 times for this. Nothing has changed.

Long story short, I’ve been staying at my parents’ place until I move into my own place Nov 1 (less than a week).

EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT. from 6p-3a (I’ve timed this shit) two dogs have been whining considerably without notice and barking consistently without care. I have tried to talk to the neighbour over the fence while I’ve been here, buddy just walks away and says to mind my own business. I’ve pushed back a couple of times, but he just goes inside (doesn’t try to escalate anything, just blatantly refuses to talk about it whatsoever).
I have to sleep with my windows open bc of whatever, and all I hear til 2-3am is constant whining from these dogs.

Idk if 311 jusy doesn’t care, or if things are taken care of (the dogs get let inside) by the time they come around, but fuck man. Is there anything I can do? I’m only here for two more weeks max, but should I start recording all this noise? Or just keep calling 311 for nothing to happen.
I feel so bad for these dogs and I’m hoping I can do more than just call useless idiots for days on end.

If anyone has dealt with this situation and has successfully helped those animals, please let me know. I feel like I’m at a loss and no one around cares. These dogs need SOME sort of help.

Buy/Sell/Free Looking for a Table Tennis Table Donation

Hey Ottawa!

I'm part of the Table Tennis Club at Colonel By Secondary School in Ottawa, and we're looking for anyone who might be willing to donate a table tennis table to our club!

If you have a table sitting around that you no longer use, we'd really appreciate it if you'd consider donating it to our school! It doesn't have to be brand new, just in decent, playable condition.

If you or someone you know has a table they'd be willing to donate, please send me a DM!
Thanks

Unofficial results from the City of Ottawa. Turnout is down in every ward, but about as many people voted as in 2022 (~314,400 vs ~316,300). The voters’ list also grew by about 146,000.

Looking for... Best neighborhood/area for trick or treating?

My daughter wants to go trick or treating this weekend but I don’t think my area will be the best for it. What are your recommendations?

Just got inherited and an older watch. Where in the west end would be a good place to get a new battery and a new watch band.

Better Business Bureau Ottawa

Anyone have any dealings with BBB Ottawa? Asking because they took down my factual and honest review of a local company (from a year ago) on the basis that the business has today claimed I was not a customer (false claim). I used to believe that BBB was reliable.

Looking for... Anything going on in the City on Halloween?

I only ask, because im trying to figure out what to do since Idk if I will be participating in trick or treat (handing out candy, obviously) this year or not.

I know Ottawa Bad Movie Bad Movie Nights is having there double feature, but thats during the day, or more accurately, in the afternoon, but thats before the night side of things actually starts and other then that I can't think of anything else.

So, is there anything going on on Halloween night? Any special events like a Haunted House or a Party or a market or something like that besides just trick or treating?

Sunday 715pm Single-bike-bike-accident Thank you!

Thx to the 2 young couples who stopped after I fell off my bike. Offered first aid, called 911, & dispite my refusal continued insisting on driving me/my bike home! Thx to police managing traffic to keep us all safe.

Thx CoO for new roomy shoulders & bike lanes... the former of which I was testing out. Ironically, feeling "too safe", got distracted by full moon & unusual warm air. Result: I drifted off asphalt's edge. No prob. Rode the gravel, but saw rocks ahead. Panicked. Tried too quickly to get back on pavement. Toppled hard!

Aside from swelling/bruising, am almost back on my bike. Sara(h) & Stanley, thx for ur calm kindness. To the first-on-the-scene couple (sorry ur names continue to be fuzzy), thx for stopping & waiting to see I could bike back safely...and everything between. Thank you!

If you didn't vote

Absolutely no judgement here. If you didn't vote you are in the majority. People often overlook local politics for a variety of reasons.

I would love to know: why didn't you fill out a ballot?

Additionally, if you have an answer: what would/might get you enthusiastic about voting in the future?

I am asking these questions in earnest and in the hopes of maybe getting people out in the future because I believe getting people engaged is the best way to achieve positive results

There is a lot to be optimistic about with the election results last night

I've been following this election pretty closely, and it became clear to me months ago that Sutcliffe was going to be re-elected. Mainly because it is really, really hard to beat an incumbent mayor, and Leiper just wasn't running the type of campaign needed to pull off a major upset.

But I wanted to highlight why many people who were hopeful for a Leiper win should still be happy with last night's results:

  • Allan Hubley, one of the most conservative councillors, was unseated by progressive Erin Coffin (and it wasn't even close)
  • Outgoing councillor Glen Gower, former Watson Club member who voted with Sutcliffe 88% of the time, will be replaced by a more left-leaning candidate in Chelsea Walton
  • Joanne Chianello won by a huge margin over two more right-leaning candidates in Kichissippi
  • All the progressive incumbent councillors won by huge margins, including Sean Devine who faced an concerted effort by conservative councillors to unseat him
  • Sutcliffe's vote share declined by 7% and he received 20,000 fewer votes than he did in 2022, despite having the incumbency advantage
  • Many conservative councillors performed worse than they did in 2022, including Luloff (-38%) and Tierney (-19%)

So we'll have what is almost certainly the best City Council since amalgamation, with progressive councillors who were giving overwhelming mandates, conservative councillors whose support is eroding, and a mayor who was given a sharp indictment at the ballot box. That is a very promising outcome.
