Community OpenSUSE is now my favorite linux distro

Hi everyone, i just want to share my experience, ive been a linux user for almost a year, ive tried a lot of distros, i used to mainly drive Arch Linux because is rolling release, but now that i learned how to properly use and manage OpenSUSE tumbleweed im very cofortable on this system, i installed and use the vanilla kernel because i like it pure, and manually install official NVIDIA drivers using OpenSUSE guide.
This distro is gold and is sad that not many people knows it.

Packman continues after Jan 1

Good news, at least for some, packman continues.

https://lists.links2linux.de/pipermail/packman/2026-October/018393.html

Here's the quote:

Dear all,

first of all: thank you for the many replies, questions and offers. We
were genuinely happy about them – and we are aware that we did not
follow up on all of them. That was not a lack of appreciation, it was
simply down to the situation. Please don't hold it against us.

And yes: Flatpak was an example. One of several, and in hindsight
probably not the best-chosen one – we should have left it out and stuck
with "distributions have evolved". We did not expect it to spark a
full-blown debate about the end of packaging.

All the better, then, the actual news: some long-term contributors have
stepped up to take over Packman. The service will continue as before,
and the discontinuation planned for 31/12/2026 is off the table. We will
sort out the details of the handover (infrastructure, builds,
repositories) in the background and get back to you here once there is
something concrete to report.

Tech question Why is Slowroll still in the experimental stage?

I’m asking because I genuinely don’t understand could you explain this in a way that makes it clear to me?

While Slowroll appears ready for daily use, it is clear that it is not yet as trouble-free as Tumbleweed.

As far as I know, the difference with Slowroll is that it receives packages only after they have successfully passed through Tumbleweed without issues. In other words, the distinction is simply that it gets the packages a bit later. If the packages have already been verified as successful and the set of packages is identical, why is it still considered to be in an experimental phase?

Furthermore, based on what I see on this page, it really doesn’t seem to be fully ready yet.

How to… ? Does Starmoney work with Virtualbox in Tumbleweed ?

Hi all,

I´ve read somewhere that it should be possible to run Starmoney in Virtualbox.

Is this possible in Tumbleweed and has someone managed to do this ?

[ German mode on, since Starmoney is mostly used in Germany ]

Wäre schön wenn es gehen würde, weil ich dann endlich mein letztes Windows abschiessen könnte.

Slowroll Installation - Great experience

Post image
43 Upvotes

Just a heads up and appreciation post to those involved in Slowroll's development and maintenance. I hope it will soon make it out of experimental/beta status and become a fully recognised openSUSE 'flavour'.

I got a new AMD (CPU/GPU) based desktop to take over from my iMac. I got a 27" 5K display for it and had two minds about what to install. Would it be openSUSE Leap 16.1, Slowroll or Fedora. I have been using Gnome and also thought whether to continue with it or go for Plasma DE.

I eventually decided on Slowroll. My use of Slowroll has been through migrations from Tumbleweed. This time around, I went for the Slowroll installation iso. The installation went smoothly. I was impressed that the DPI adjusted appropriately for the installation so I could easily configure. I got into expert mode for partitioning and went for a separate ext4 /home partition and brtfs /root partition.

The install went without trouble and the display is EXCELLENT at 175DPI. Like Wow!

I've been gradually installing apps, configuring them and overall tweaking the system, i.e., firewalld, network printing/scanning, fstab for NAS shares, Citrix Client via Ubuntu distrobox container among other things. However, no games except the basic solitaire types, and no packman repo since I have a few flatpaks that cover my extra codec needs.

I now have it dialled in and with a strong feeling of satisfaction, I have to express my thanks to @bmwiedemann for his dedicated work on Slowroll.

Community I think I'm Home

I have been using Linux for about a year. I initially wanted to try CachyOS, but due to some issues, I switched to Fedora. I didn't really have any problems with Fedora, but things felt a bit slower; everything was set up correctly, yet something still felt like it was missing.
It was at this point in my journey that I encountered openSUSE. In fact, the very first Linux CD distributed in my country, many years ago, was openSUSE. I was young back then and had no idea what Linux was.
I feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be right now. I’ve never felt such an urge to tinker with a distribution before. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed using my computer this much with any other distro. I’ve been using it for the past week, and I’ve been exploring and tweaking the system—without even touching the visual settings.
I performed the installation using Agama—without yast or packman. I configured grub2-efi, ran a few commands, and learned how the system actually works. At first, I thought it wouldn't be much different from Fedora, but then I realized something: using my computer suddenly felt exciting again. I found myself on a journey where I’m eager to learn more. openSUSE is likely an older distribution than I am, and it reminds me of my grandfather—whom I lost to cancer—in the way it offers guidance, suggesting, "It might be better if you did it this way." I’ve been using it for the past week, and I haven’t run into a single issue. And you know what? Even if I did encounter a problem, it makes me feel motivated to solve it. I think that’s the special quality openSUSE has—something I didn't feel with other distributions. Run into a snag? "Oh, no worries—we can handle it, dude." It feels like home, and I’m happy to be here. I finally understand why people love it so much. It’s a home, and one is always happy at home.

Plasma remote desktop in Tumbleweed

Hello fellow chameleons, I was excited about KDE Plasma 6.8 remote desktop enhancements and wanted to try it but apparently it's not included by default in Tumbleweed's Plasma (Security concerns?).

Which package do I need to download?

Tech question Leap vs Debian Stable: which one feels more stable in practice?

Hey all,

Been on Debian Stable + KDE for about a month now. I haven't used Leap yet, so I'm asking people who have.

Which one is more stable, Leap or Debian Stable? And if you've switched between them, did anything feel different day to day, like updates or software?

Thanks!

Tech support catastrophic 3D performance degradation since one day

i'll start by saying i cannot rollback the update further than yesterday, i already tried rolling it back, no change at all.

my issue is very odd, and makes some games unplayable, i have tested the division 2 and the finals so far, both show the same problem

when i'm in a menu, performance is normal, as soon as i actually play the game, the on screen FPS are 3x lower, i cannot aim at anything , and everything is extremely laggy, if i press ESC to open a menu, the problem immediately goes away. and it's not on games that show a fullscreen menu that decreases the 3D load, the menus areoverlays or inside the game area, there's no logical reason that explains such behavior

i didn't have this problem like 2-3 days ago

2025-2026 Chromebooks with ARM - which ones work with openSUSE?

it is almost holiday sales time in the USA, I want a dedicated openSUSE notebook and I was thinking about one of the ARM powered devices. Does anyone have a list of what works with either LEAP or Tumbleweed?

ARM is just one factor, being able to boot a different OS is a second impediment. Snapdragon, and Mediatek (shivers) are popular right now.

Just wanted to start looking, may end up with another Windows laptop to instal x86_64 versions, but worth some discussion for the Chromebook, and ARM side of things.

How to downgrading Mesa for Tumbleweed

UPDATE

I solved the problem by reinstall the system.

1.Clean install Leap 16.1 (with Mesa 26.0) 2.lock the following packages sudo zypper addlock 'Mesa*' Mesa libvulkan_radeon libvulkan_intel libvulkan_lvp libglapi0 libSPIRV-Tools-2026_1 libSPIRV-Tools-2026_1-32bit

3.switch Leap to Tumbleweed (without dependency error related to Mesa) 4.Enable third party repo 5.System works good.

Maybe the solution is a little dirty, at least it works. With the clean install on btrfs, snapper is finally available on my system.

Hi, i got the abnormal CPU usage of kwin_wayland with the new Mesa 26.2.x.
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/work_items/16215

I tried the last 26.2.5 today, but it didn't work.

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 5600
  • GPU: 9070XT
  • OS: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20261022
  • Kernel: 7.3.0-1-default (64bit)
  • Mesa Version: Mesa
  • KDE Plasma Version: 6.8.1
  • KDE Frameworks Version: 6.31.0
  • Qt Version: 6.12.0

When i tried to downgrading with rpm files i downloaded before from snapshot260802, the log in screen became blank only with cursor.

Also tried to add Leap 16.1 repo to downgrading Mesa, but it jumped over login screen and tty.

My system runs on ext4, so the snapper wouldn't work.
Is there any other way to downgrading Mesa to 26.1 safety?

Thank you!

Tech support Tumbleweed installer Expert Partioner can't assign mount points

I am trying to install from new 4.4GB iso installer. Hard drive has an old installation of Opensuse, and was not used for long time. The automatic proposal is rubbish - it wants to install in existing sda3 partition (which was home). So I choose the expert partitioner, which I would normally do. I wished to retain existing home partition without formatting. The expert partitioner only allows me to edit the boot partition. When I select the old root home or swap partions, most options are greyed out. So you cannot assign a / mount point which is essential for installing. I have used many different distros. I don't get this roadblock elsewhere.

Tech question How to handle config in /home with Snapper rollbacks?

Hi!

I'm used to LTS distros and I'm researching a bit about how Snapper works since it seems to be a part of Tumbleweed's rolling release model. I know Snapper doesn't require a rolling release but it seems extra fitting here I guess.

Say KDE Plasma gets updated from Plasma 6.7 to 6.8, there are perhaps new config properties in my home folder that are adapted to the new Plasma version.

If I then choose to rollback via Snapper so that 6.7 is installed again, my desktop could be in an indeterminate state due to these config files that are still in my home folder. They might even break the 6.7 version.

Is this a case where it wouldn't be enough to just rollback via Snapper, but I have to use a backup of my home folder as well where 6.7 was installed? Or am I missing something about Snapper?

Thanks for reading!

So i enter the command as usual, but what do i get? Problems. A maze of choose 1-4 options of break dependencies, uninstall, keep as is... The problem is no matter what i do the problems just keep increasing. I just want to update dammit. I tried searching around but there's nothing overly concrete on how to fix it.

Issue Fixed Just installed OpenSUSE TW (20261021) on my desktop to replace POP! and only steam (downloaded via zypper) downloads at 0mbps, all other downloads download between 150-200 Mbps

Long story, i do apologize. 2 days ago i installed OpenSUSE on my main desktop to replace pop! os. had zero issues with it on my laptop, so I thought it would be faster on here. All downloads i've made so far (KDE Connect, updates, themes, drivers, prism, etc) have installed at normal speeds. Steam, however, starts download at 215 Mbps, then immediately drops to 0bps. My steam games to to a separate 1 TB drive (Formatted to udf and is not encrypted) than my m.2 (which OpenSUSE is installed on). Ive followed a few fixes from the forum: turning off IPV6 (router has that disabled anyways, but i also did it PC side), created the steam_dev.cfg file, which contains:

(@)nClientDownloadEnableHTTP2PlatformLinux 0 (minus parenthesis, reddit thinks its a user)

(@)fDownloadRateImprovementToAddAnotherConnection 1 (minus parenthesis, reddit thinks its a user)

(@)cMaxInitialDownloadSources 15 (minus parenthesis, reddit thinks its a user)

I have also verified disk integrity, still golden, cleared download cache on steam, changed download regions, reset permissions, unplugged and replugged the router. ive followed multiple fixes on the forums and still nothing.

the blue download lines on steam are tall, but spaced out pretty far from each other, like its being blocked.
