How do I install Mesa with hardware decoding after the Packman repository is shut down?

Is Flatpak the only option left?

I'm seeing people state on this sub that there's interest in someone else taking over Packman.

But no if Packman is shut down you're not left to only flatpak. You can compile your own packages locally.

I've considered making a script to do this locally if Packman is shut down and nobody shows interest, but I suspect someone will.

I have already created one. It automatically grabs packages from opensuse source repos and compiles them in a tumbleweed docker container.

My main gripe with openSUSE is the codec situation.

The way has been bypassing zypper through flatpacks (which may not be a bad thing) or praying the codecs you need work and the application you use uses them. If the codecs go, it just renders “half” the zypper repo useless.

Having a script is also nonsense. This has been the only thing making me actively think about migrating.

Unfortunately codecs are patented and until they expire Suse and Opensuse don't want to include them. H264 patents expires in around 2 years and that'll fix many codec issues. H265 issues will remain but that one's not as widely used luckily.

If packman is shut down*

I shouldn't worry about it just now. There has been some interest in the community to hand over the project for new maintainers.

This has been my main concern as well, not the codecs. Wouldn't be surprised if it ends up hosted on an OBS repo, but some good samaritan with the skills would need to do it.

Official opensuse OBS forbids hosting legally problematic software so the codecs can't be hosted there.

What one can do is spin up their own OBS server as OBS software is open source, but that's what packman already is. That's why they're looking for volunteers to take over. It's already the best solution.

I have set up a private build service (a cheap mini-PC) on my local network to build Mesa with hardware acceleration for codecs. It syncs with OBS automatically and compiling packages with codecs support requires only a single parameter passed to the builder.
