Hi everyone,
I wanted to ask MF Drive owners if they can distinguish the real pedal from my model! The model is not for sale, this is a blind test to evaluate my efforts.
So, I love the Moog MF Drive. It is a very unique overdrive because of the Tone knob that is both low pass and high pass, and the nice Moog Ladder Filter built in. It's great.
It is in fact so great, that I wanted in my DAW. I wanted it to have an LFO, too! And to function properly on stereo tracks!
And so I measured it. Over three sessions I re-amped more than 270 takes through the pedal: every knob at all 11 clock positions, switch on/off pairs with nothing else changed, and a test file with sine sweeps, level ramps, two-tone tests, guitar DI and synth.
The model isn’t a neural network. It’s a signal chain that follows the pedal’s circuit: a clipping drive stage, a 4-stage transistor ladder filter with resonance, the tone tilt and the output stages. Its roughly 100 settings were fitted to my recordings by curve fitting. The knob behaviour comes straight from the measured positions, not from guesses.
I worked with an AI assistant (Claude) on the DSP code and the fitting. The recordings, the listening and the decisions were mine: which version sounded right, where it was too dark, what to add (a Bright mode, DI/LINE input, an LFO on the filter), and the interface, which I designed myself. I worked on this for weeks, and I hope it shows.
Now for the true blind test I picked some settings on guitar and synth parts, made an A/B and had Claude make a simple A/B test.
I would love to hear some feedback on the test. I found it hard to get the curve fitting right and it took some real detailed listening. It's not a perfect clone, I think. But it is mighty close. I personally got a 9/10 on the test. But I mean, I now hear the pedal in my sleep, so I guess I'm not the best tester.
I will post the link to the test as a comment, because if I include the link Reddit filters out my post. :(
