This performance by Stu Mackenzie from King Gizzard is one of my favorite videos using a modular system. I love how he manages to create very coherent and musical sounds while continuously changing things, sequences and melodies.
I'm pretty new to actually using modular, but I know a lot about synthesis in general, so I was wondering about which modules or "techniques" I should look into for something similar to this?
I use VCV Rack, and I'm planning on getting some hardware, so would love recommendations for both, but mostly I'm interested in just how a setup like this is planned out, how many sequencers, how to have variation etc. It feels like there are a lot of different sequences and rhythms at the same time, which in my limited knowledge would mean a sequencer with a whole bunch of channels, or am I missing something on how to make use of less channels while still having this much variation?
It seems to me that he has a lot of VCAs at the top to use as a mixer to add and remove certain elements and uses it as a performance tool, by muting at the right time etc.
EDIT: As an aside, if someone has any tips on recreating the absolute first sound he's using, I'd love to hear it. Sounds really natural and almost acoustic
