[Announcement] New Rule Against AI, other Rule Changes and Clarifications

Hey folks!

For a while now, the mod team has been discussing a number of changes to the subreddit's rules, and it's time to let you know what's up. I'll give you the short version first:

  1. We have a new rule against AI.
  2. The rule for for formatting and vagueness has been split in two.
  3. The rule against unrealistic ideas has been reworked.
  4. To better accommodate these new and changed rules, we've re-ordered the rules.
  5. Clarification on how the "Community Question" flair is supposed to be used.

And now for the details!

Ban Against AI Generated Content

We not so recently polled the community on your feeling on AI generated content, and the overwhelming majority of you voted in favour of a complete ban against AI. While this was pretty much the outcome we expected, it's still really nice to see we're all on the same page.

Moving forwards the mods will be removing all posts suspected of using generative AI. To that end, here's the new rule:

Don't use AI.

  • Do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to write your post for you. We want to see your ideas.
  • Don't include AI generated images or other AI content to supplement your post. We encourage human art, and we'd much rather see photos of pen-and-paper drawings, or quick mockups in MS paint than AI "art".
  • This includes using generative AI to polish your idea, such as reformatting your content.

Posts suspected of using generative AI are at risk of removal.

If your post is incorrectly removed for containing AI, please let the mods know via modmail and we'll sort it out.

Formatting and Image Posts

We've noticed some confusion on where and how we allow images in posts, with too many users relying on images alone to communicate their idea. This was previously just a bullet point under the vagueness rule, but in the interest of clarity we've split it off into its own rule. There's nothing actually new here - everything works the same as before - but hopefully this should make it clearer for everyone.

The vagueness rule looks like this now:

Don't be overly vague, and be readable.

  • Make sure your idea is in the description, not just the title.
  • Titles should be descriptive of the idea.
  • Format your posts well; don't post walls of text. Use line breaks, etc.
  • Don't be vague; suggest a specific improvement or feature.
  • Be concise/don't waffle on too much.

Vague or unformatted posts are at risk of removal.

And here's the images rule:

Don't make image-only posts.

Including reference images is encouraged, but: * Images must be embedded or linked within a text post. * The idea should be fully explained in the text, with all key points understandable without looking at any images. * Images should make up a relatively small portion of the content. * Images must not be AI generated. (See rule 4.)

Image only posts will be automatically removed.

Unrealistic and Off-Theme Content

There's been some disagreement in the community and among the mod team about what is and isn't a "realistic" suggestion for Minecraft, especially as the game has grown it's become an increasingly difficult call to make. Furthermore, many ideas that are off-theme at first glance can be reskinned to something more reasonable, and we don't want to stifle that discussion. (E.g., Blimps and firearms may be too futuristic but happy ghasts and firework crossbows are not, yet serve similar roles.)

You deserve to have clear guidelines for which posts are or aren't allowed and, ultimately, we don't want to shut down discussion, so we've decided to soften this rule dramatically. Moving forwards, we'll only be taking down suggestions involving mature or explicit themes (stuff that might change the age-rating), as well as anything relating to real-world religions or politics. All that said, here's the rule:

Don't suggest mature topics.

  • Don't suggest ideas containing sex, drugs, gore, real-life religions or politics, etc.

Suggestions involving mature, explicit, or overly divisive themes will be removed.

This is one we'll be keeping an eye on, and we'd appreciate any feedback you have on it.

N.B. The portion of the old rule about easter-eggs and jokes still applies, but has been merged into the rule about unproductive ideas.

Reordering

As we're adding new rules and splitting old ones in twain, there's no better time to also rearrange the rules. We've brought some more important/frequently used rules closer to the top, and tried to keep related rules close to each other. We've also changed a few of the titles for clarity.

  1. Be nice and constructive.
  2. Only post ideas for Minecraft.
  3. Be original and consult the FPS list.
  4. Don't use AI.
  5. Include only one suggestion per post.
  6. Don't be overly vague, and be readable.
  7. Don't make image-only posts.
  8. Don't suggest mature topics.
  9. Don't suggest planned or existing features.
  10. Don't suggest scrapped or unused features.
  11. Don't suggest low-priority or unproductive ideas.
  12. Speak English.
  13. Have 10 comment karma before posting.

Discussion/Community Question Posts

We've seen some confusion surrounding these posts, and while nothing is changing, we wanted to use this opportunity to clarify. Posts meant to start broad discussions on a topic, such as "What would you add in XYZ update?" or "What do you think needs updated in XYZ area of the game?" are allowed, so long as the OP contributes to the discussion they want to start. We find these posts regularly generate interesting discussion, and so long as they use the correct flair, they're easy enough to ignore if they're not your cup of tea.

I encourage everyone to take a quick read through the rules to make sure we're all on the same page.

Thanks for reading!

[Mobs] How to improve a forgotten mob - [Snow Golem + Ice ball]

Post image
161 Upvotes

The Snow Golem has stagnated over the years, as you can only really take advantage of it if you know how to make traps properly; otherwise, it usually ends up relegated to being a snow farm through the use of a shovel. Because of this, I propose making it possible to equip it with an 'Ice ball' from the 'Frostbite', so it stops firing snowballs and starts firing ice balls. (To balance it out a bit, it would be necessary for its attack to have a slow cooldown, so the snow golem doesn't become an unstoppable turret).

I think there should be an additional Snow Brick Block: Chiseled Snow Bricks they would act like a decorative version of the newly added Snow Bricks.

[Structures] Frozen Fossils

In theme with the Ice Caves Update, it would add more ambiance to the game if we got perfectly preserved prehistoric megafauna.

It would be similar to fossils which we already have in the game https://minecraft.wiki/w/Fossil .

They'd be made out of wool and bones, be behind a layer of ice and have a bit of them poking out.

[Structures] New Village Variant - Conquered Villages

Conquered Villages are a new variant of Villages that can rarely generate. They are the Villages that were raided by Illagers and lost. Each building in a Conquered Village has no door, and at least one building is half-destroyed due to a Ravager attack. All job blocks and the bell of the Village are destroyed, and a couple of dozen Illager flags are planted in a random spot. A few Vindicators and Pillagers can also spawn in a Conquered Village, and a caged Iron Golem can also spawn.

What do you guys think?

[Blocks & Items] Amethyst crystals should make noises when on amethyst or budding amethyst blocks.

Ice crystals now make chime-like noises when on packed ice as of the latest snapshot. Given that both blocks are crystals (and amethysts already have a sort of jingly theme) I think it would make sense to retroactively apply the same logic to the amethyst crystals as well. Though probably with a somewhat different jingle to differentiate the two and to give players more options for soundscapes.

I know this could impact some existing builds but I don't think it would be too disruptive. I think it would be on par with when falling leaves were added to the existing leaf blocks.

tipped arrows damage over time effects should apply after the flame damage over time effect so they arent cancelled out like they currently, are thus making tipped arrows actually useful with flame on your bow.

[Blocks & Items] Picking up snowballs without a shovel

That’s how it works in real life after all. A shovel shouldn’t be necessary to get snowballs in game because real snowballs are usually dug out and formed by the hands without tools. If anything, a shovel should only give you a snow layer.

If anything water should be the thing that doesn’t produce anything when it falls on snow. Real flowing water generally dissolves snow.

[Command] Interaction entities should have the ability to run commands themselves upon interaction

When I first heard of these I thought that's what they actually did. Instead you have to use always-repeating command blocks and a clunky execute command to check if their state was changed by entering or right clicking them. They ought to be able to work like signs, or a more invisible version of tripwires/pressure plates. Endless possibilities.

[Mobs] Villager headgear with special effects to allow villagers to live underwater or in the nether more safely.

• Upvotes

Mermaid Helmet- Loses the ability to breed if only one is given. Allows breathing underwater and pushes drowned away drowned when hit. Villagers equipped in it will prefer waterlogged beds and doors and won't float on water, like skeletons. Giving them a second one will allow them to initiate breeding underwater (which is given to the baby villager upon creation).

Construction-Turtle Helmet and Conduit. Must be enchanted with Water Breathing before being given to a villager, and can only be enchanted with Water Breathing.

Hoglin Helmet- Hoglins now attack villagers without it. When it's equipped, Hoglins won't attack them. Makes them immune to fire damage, and if near a nether portal in the overworld, they will attempt to reach it.

Construction -Gold Helmet, Netherite Scraps, and Magma Cream/Blaze Powder/Blaze rod (Not Shure which would be best). Must be enchanted with Fire Protection before being given to a villager, and can only be enchanted with Fire Protection.

Ender Helmet- If they fall enough meters that they'd take fall damage, they'll instantly teleport to a nearby block. Occasionally teleports, similar to endermen, but will prefer to teleport inside villages.

Construction- Netherite Helmet, Eye of Ender (Maybe also some End item). Must be enchanted with Feather Falling to be given to a villager, and can only enchanted with Feather Falling.

I think this way, it'll open a way to make villagers better suited to other environments without changing the initial behavior of villagers, and so I can make an actual underwater village.

[Transportation] FURNACE MINECART REWORK: fuel-based speeds, chained minecarts and a speed bar

Thumbnail
gallery
230 Upvotes

Furnace minecarts feel underwhelming and outdated. Let's update them!

Minecart with furnace rework
The fuel defines the speed the minecart with furnace runs at. To run, it requires player input via chained minecarts or running over powered rails. If pushed, it moves a little, but not at its defined speed. A normal minecart has a defined speed of 8 b/s to not hurt any existing builds.

A new interface shows the player how fast the minecart with furnace can run with a given fuel.

Every fuel gets used up after 1600 ticks (1:20min).
If there is no fuel in it, the minecart with furnace is unable to move (unless it's pushed).

List of all fuels

fuel speed (in blocks per second) number of smelts per fuel
lava bucket 20 100
block of coal 18 80
dried kelp block 10 20
blaze rod 9 12
(char)coal 8 8
(chest)boat 8 6
wooden blocks and items 7 1.5, 0.75, 0.5
carpet 7 0.335
bamboo and scaffolding 7 0.25

The speed of the fuel is closely related to its "number of smelts per fuel". Therefore, the better the fuel, the faster the minecart.
For redstone components to work, the maximum speed is set at 20 b/s.

Chained minecarts
Minecarts (every version of it) can be chained together by applying iron or copper chain in the same way as you would leash boats together, forming a solid connection between each cart.

chained minecarts running over a curve

Speed bar
Furnace minecarts should be useful for both redstone and transportation. Therefore, travelling should be more engaging than simply sitting and waiting, and they should be able to exceed the maximum speed of 20 b/s.

If a minecart is mounted, a speed bar with a speedometer appears above the hotbar.
speed bar / locked speed bar:

[ not moving _ -6 b/s _ -3 b/s _ defined speed _ +3 b/s _ + 6 b/s _ not moving ]
  • When “forward” is pressed, the speedometer moves to the right.
  • If there’s no input, the speedometer moves to the left.
  • If the minecart runs over powered rails, it’s never slower than its “defined speed” (the middle of the speed bar gets locked).

Any feedback is appreciated :)

[Combat] QoL Changes to the Spear

Post image
116 Upvotes

Just some small additional usage ideas for the Spear.

Shield Use: The most obvious change would be to make it so that when a spear and shield are held at the same time both can be used at the same time.

Spear Dispensing: An idea that's made its rounds already. Basically a dispenser dispenses a spear in a damaging jab and then retracts said spear.

Prodding: When holding a spear in the charging attack and not moving fast enough to deal damage the spear can still knock back entities short distances by shaking the spear. This wouldn't damage or aggro the entity.

[General] Swifty-Swipers! [The Fox Update]

Post image
49 Upvotes

(Not the Taylor swift update different spelling.)

This Update will enhance foxes in Minecraft. currently foxes are ambient mobs similar to wolfs and rabbits but unlike wolfs foxs cannot technically be tamed, this update will fix that. You can now tame foxes like a wolf by feeding it sweet berries but unlike wolfs foxes will not attack mobs that you attack, instead if you attack a mob that is holding an item the fox will steal whatever item is in the mobs' hand and run away, allowing the player to retrieve the item by right clicking on the item in the foxes' mouth. there are some special interactions with this mechanic such as attacking a Villager or Illager will cause the fox to steal an emerald in its instead of the fox stealing the illagers weapon. if a mob is not holding an item in its hand the fox will not attack it.

An idea I had to help show off this feature to the player was to have another mob use foxes to steal, the mob would be a new illager known as the "Infiltrator " (Wip name and design) The Infiltrator would be an illager wearing a new item the "villager mask" The Infiltrator with the mask will take the form of a villager based on what biome it is in and will spawn with 2 tamed foxes', the foxes would mostly run around the village occasionally stealing an emerald from a villager. The Infiltrator would act like a normal villager but will pick a random target to "Steal from" whatever villager The Infiltrator steals from will no longer be able to trade for that day. The Infiltrator will actively look for the foxes at night to retrieve the emeralds that were stolen (Nitwits will also seek out The Infiltrator foxes at night to yoink the emeralds from them) Attacking The Infiltrator will cause it to reveal its true form and attack the player with a wooden sword, on death The Infiltrator has a chance to drop The villager mask, which will prevent iron golems from attacking the player Aswell as alerting nearby iron golem toward there area if the player is attacked with the mask on making the golem target whatever attacked the player.

The finally part of the drop would be carpets. not any new carpets but a new cosmetic use for carpet! remember when they added the ability to put a carpet on lamas backs to give them a costume? well now you can do this to Wolves,Foxes,Horses,Cats and Donkeys and Mules. to remove a carpet design on a mob you would just right click with shears .

[Mobs] A new mob, Cynocephalus: The Wilderness Far Away

Post image
10 Upvotes

Inspired by ancient legends, let us extend the Minecraft bestiary with a new monstrous race: the Cynocephali. They would be dog-headed humanoids inhabiting distant lands (say, beyond 10,000 blocks from spawn), encouraging long-distance exploration in the Overworld.

Cynos spawn in packs and live in nomadic camps featuring hide tents and campfires. When you enter their territory, they expect a generous gift of meat. Unless you offer one, they become hostile; otherwise, they accept you and allow you to barter for exotic goods.

They hunt at dawn and twilight, when they gain extra strength and speed. However, the full moon triggers their rage: howling at the sky, they undergo lycanthropy, shapeshifting into giant wolves with glowing red eyes. All trust is forgotten; they are unconditionally hostile until sunrise.

Most importantly, you can form a pact with a Cyno to accompany you! Equipped with a weapon, shield, and armor provided by the player, they fight alongside you and respond to dedicated whistle commands (stop, follow, charge). However, their wild hearts can never be tamed: the pact ends with the next rage.

Introducing Cynos opens doors for new, related elements in the game, such as the Whistles, the Lunar Clock to predict upcoming moon phases, or Wolfsbane - a plant useful for protection against Lycanthropes.

Let us develop this concept together - share your ideas in the comments!

Respective post on Minecraft Feedback: https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/49522682028301-Cynocephalus-The-Wilderness-Far-Away

Too long, didn't read:

  • Cynocephalus - a dog-headed humanoid
  • reward for distant journeys (> 10 000 blocks)
  • moonlight rage: shapeshifting into hostile wolves
  • pact to accompany the player and help against enemies

[Redstone] Comparator reading the instrument of a Noteblock

I've been thinking of a way to filter out Oxidized Blocks of Copper out of non-oxidized and got this idea for filtering using Noteblocks as detectors of what block is below them - I feel like this would be a great analog way to implement a detector of in-world blocks.

I see this could also be used as an easy source of getting exact redstone signal.

While there are more instruments than redstone signal strengths, I can see a good compromise of joining together blocks that aren't really together in any scenario or niche ones like Banjo from Hay Bales.

[Redstone] Hopper upgrade to filter items

Post image
614 Upvotes

To build a storage system that can handle the over 1000 items that Minecraft has is rarely difficult. You either have to organize by hand every time you dump items, use copper golems which are slow and often get messed up, build a massive array of single filters to sort out items which takes up a massive amount of space and recourses or building a multi item sorter which is arguably some of Minecraft more complex Redstone and is prone to breaking.

TLDR storage in Minecraft kinda sucks right now so what this item would do is it works like a normal hopper except it would only pick up items you set it to be able to, you can set any amount of different items for it to be able to pick up.

For example if you had a normal hopper above it pointing left and the normal hopper had Redstone but the sorter can’t pick up Redstone the Redstone would keep going left.

I made the recipe slightly expensive but not too bad considering you’d only need ~25 to sort every item in the game into double chests. It also has shulker shells to make it an end game item and to make sure copper golems aren’t phased out entirely.

[Blocks & Items] Craftable Ice Using 4 Ice Balls

Like you can do 2x2 snowballs in the crafting table for a snow block, you should be able to do 2x2 ice balls for an ice block. It would definitely make ice easier to get early game before getting silk touch while keeping silk touch's efficiency for getting ice. Thanks for reading :)!

[User Interface] Let us change the color of our locator bar

I think that the title is self explanatory, let us change the color of our locator bar instead of it being tied to our UID, probably somewhere in the skin customisation menu.

I don't see a reason to not let us do it, you could say that on large servers people would change it to the same color but you could just make it toggleable with a gamerule, if you disable it, the UID color is shown instead. Also it's not like any huge servers have the locator bar enabled anyway

[Transportation] Booster (Copper) Rails

Post image
107 Upvotes

So, I have this in Minecraft Feedback, but it doesn't seem to get much eyes on it, maybe since it isn't used for anything else other than suggestions. So, here's my idea, copy-pasted and fixed typos.

I have thought a way that powered rails could have a consistent speed for those who use it for redstone, but also a way to have minecart travel faster.

I present, the booster rails, made of copper. Something which needs to be powered with the original powered rails and it can link to maybe a few booster rails too before needing another powered rail. I'm thinking that each booster rail could speed up the minecart when it is lit, but slows down the minecart when it is unlit.

[Magic] Lava Bounce

The idea is mainly an enchantment, but I could see it working (albeit less well) as a potion effect.

Lava Bounce (level 1-3 boots enchantment) would have you bounce up a certain amount of blocks depending on the enchantment level whenever you fall, jump or walk onto lava source blocks, similar to Frost Walker with slight differences. You would continue bouncing until you took off the boots or land on something that's not lava.

[Gameplay] I refuse to build auto farms or grinders when I play Minecraft. I think the XP system as well as enchanting system needs an overhaul.

I posted something incredibly similar on r/Minecraft earlier today. After reviewing that post and it's comments, I've edited this one heavily for my tone and overall experiences, to hopefully get around people asking me the same questions as last time, and to better explain my stance, so if you're seeing me twice, my last post went received minimal fanfare other than like 2 dudes who knew exactly what I was getting at, but this one's a much better post I swear.

I also cannot load the how to suggest guide. So I've gotta go off my best instincts, which is to go in depth on identifying my perceived problem, and how I'd fix it with something more than just "rework XP".

I build your standard agricultural farms and so on, at most maybe an automatic sugar cane farm, because they're easy to make. Other than that I don't enjoy the notion that farms and mob grinders being a key aspect of how you progress in the game now.

I don't hate the existence of them as a concept. Nor do I have anything against the people who make and use them(I'm an adult, that would be really really weird), but the fact that normal progression now includes mob grinders that are always more effective than just going mining, fighting mobs as they come to you in the game and so on.

Having a game as great as Minecraft and having grinding largely reliant on farming saddens me a bit. If you want more levels/want more gunpowder(ESPECIALLY before you get looting), the most effective way you can do it is building farms for it. I don't want to play a game where it's more effective to build a farm to reduce XP grinding, or hunting creepers to standing idly by whilst they show up in front of you and then pressing left click once.

So I just don't. For some reason playing the game as intended and trying to go mining or fighting mobs until you have enough XP for max level enchantments feels so punishing. I had a few people on r/minecraft ask me about my average progression, so I'll list it here so you can see what I'm getting at.

Start a new world, sometimes hardcore, not always though. First day is very classic, wood stone, coal and maybe iron if it's immediately available to me. set up a very barebones base, like a couple chests, a bed and a crafting table/furnace in the area where I want the real thing to go. I then go hunting for a full set of Iron, whilst going for more coal as well. At this point I usually deliberately avoid going for diamonds because I know I need to set up other things before they'll be useful to me. I set up your basic crops, wheat is almost always first, then if I can get my hands on carrots and potatoes they follow along. I start angling myself towards actually building something cool for a base. So I'm gathering resources and setting up a cow pen for later enchanting. Usually after this I go out for diamonds. Problem is that by this time(assuming I haven't gotten murdered yet) I probably have like 20 levels max. I don't avoid fighting mobs either. I just find I never get any XP from them. So I end up plateaued for like 6-10 days in Minecraft running around trying to find ways to get levels that doesn't feel obnoxious and tedious.

The problem I find with this is that I don't find mob grinders fun. They run kind in counterpoint to my view of the game personally. I think the game is about exploring and surviving whilst building something cool to look back on whenever you fancy it. I don't really find mob grinders and farms a cool thing to build , personally. With the current state of XP and enchanting, it feels like I get punished for that.

So, I think there are two things that could be done here. 1. Give more XP for mining Ores, it could scale from Coal/copper giving you a very modest amount, to Diamonds and ancient debris giving you a pretty decent amount(not crazy, but like say copper and coal give you 2-3XP per ore, and then Iron gives you 5-6, gold 9-10, diamonds 12-14 and ancient debris like 15-17). Then I think they could add a new way too. Maybe getting XP for achievements would be cool? Or even maybe add a modest amount of XP that scales for every micro achievement you get. Every new biome or animal tamed and so on. I think there should just be more things you can do for XP, whether that's a bunch of smaller ways that can add up through early progression, or 1 or two much more established ways that act as something you can actively go out and do, that aren't as easily farmable, that allows you to play the game without having to rely on trading and farming to get all your XP. For enchanting, I saw someone with a cool one saying you should have to collect all the enchantments in the wild somehow(trading, looting, maybe even crafting them) and then manually add them to empty book cases, that would be cool.

But yea, in summation, the game's reliance on farming and largely boring methods of gaining XP bores me, and I hope that they add something to change it, because it's the only complaint I have about a game that I think otherwise is fantastic. It can suck the fun out of some of my play throughs though.

[Mobs] Falcon Pets

I'd like to see Falcons being added to Minecraft as tamable mob which would be a neutral mob if not tamed meaning that they attack you if you harm hurt them or destroy their eggs if not tamed.

But if you do tame them with maybe chicken or fish, they would help you hunt like wolves and fight off mobs and they would fly and swoop at their targets similar to phantoms while following above you and along with you/ teleporting with you when you're using the Elytra.

You could also choose to have them land on your shoulder like parrots or maybe arm (maybe even have a leather brace in the offhand for different peaceful/ attack and follow modes or use one of those little masks where you could also dye it) when on land where you directly interact with them and heal them with fish, chicken and raw rabbit.

They could also naturally spawn and be found flying around their nests in the various mountainous peak biomes.

They could be bred with rabbit's foot which they would then lay eggs using a similar system to turtles but use nests instead.

It would also be cool if they could randomly drop rabbit hides and have a rare chance of dropping iron or gold nuggets like how cats bring rabbit's foot like as if the falcon found and brought you little shiny gifts from somewhere

[Blocks & Items] Bamboo Platforms: giving Happy Ghasts more utility

Bamboo Platforms are crafted with 6 Bamboos and can be attached to a Happy Ghast using a Lead.

Their main use is to carry a tile entity (by combining them together on the Crafting grid), such as a Furnace, Crafting Table, Chest etc. when flying with a Happy Ghast; all players aboard would be able to access the UI of the block when opening their inventory while riding the Ghast.

This could be useful in some scenarios when the player wants to build but can't place them down (or doesn't want to), or just for convenience.

When detached, the Platform would drop the block it was carrying (like old Chest/Furnace/Hopper Minecarts)
