(Just joking don't take it seriously)

I've always been the person staring at the seatback map wondering why we're over Greenland on the way to LA, so I built a small game around exactly that.

How it works: you're in one city and your boarding pass names another. You turn a compass to the heading you think is right, lock it in, and your plane flies the real great-circle route across a 3D globe.

It catches a lot of people out. JFK to Tokyo isn't "west, 270°", it departs at about 333°, up over Canada and Alaska. JFK to Singapore leaves at about 3°, basically straight over the pole. And every destination has two right answers: the short way, or the long way around the planet.

• Free and no ads
• 700 cities per run, from famous capitals to lesser-known cities
• Daily passport, pilot ranks and your own airline
• Uses a perfect sphere (R = 6,371 km) rather than WGS84, so it's for building intuition, not flight planning

December 1978, the famous NZ UFO film. Look it up, great story.

I am also still thinking about what to use as body text...
