Cinnamon Clipboard 1.2.0 released!
Cinnamon Clipboard 1.2.0 released!
Hi everyone! 👋
I'm happy to announce Cinnamon Clipboard 1.2.0, a new release with a first-run welcome screen and a few small usability improvements.
What's new in 1.2.0?
- First-run welcome screen: New users can configure a couple of basic settings before the application starts. The welcome screen can also be skipped, in which case the application starts with its default settings.
- Clearer history settings: The Save history (privacy mode) option has been renamed to Record history, with an additional explanation to make its purpose clearer.
- Clearer history limit: The settings now clarify that pinned items do not count toward the history limit.
Welcome Screen

A note about privacy and security
I've been exploring database and image encryption for Cinnamon Clipboard. However, implementing encryption properly and maintaining it responsibly turned out to be more challenging than I expected. I wasn't comfortable shipping a security-sensitive feature that I might not be able to maintain to the standard it deserves, so I've decided to abandon that work for now.
Instead, I'd rather keep the application simple and focus on the privacy protections it already provides:
- Temporary history: Users can choose temporary history when they want clipboard history that isn't retained persistently.
- Secret filtering: By design, text copied from Bitwarden, KeePassXC, and other applications that mark clipboard contents with the standard
secrethint is excluded from capture. This behavior is enforced by the application and cannot be disabled in the settings.
I believe it's better to be transparent about these limitations than to add a security feature I cannot confidently maintain.
What's next?
My next major goal is to investigate Wayland compatibility when the Linux Mint 27 beta becomes available.
For now, I don't see a need to add more features just for the sake of it. I'd rather keep the application stable, address bugs when necessary, and consider new features when users suggest something that genuinely improves the experience.
Availability
- GitHub release: https://github.com/Vaider13/cinnamon-clipboard/releases/tag/v1.2.0 — the
.debpackage is available for manual installation. - Launchpad PPA: The 1.2.0 source package has been uploaded and should become available once Launchpad finishes processing and building it.
New to Cinnamon Clipboard?
If you're discovering the project for the first time, I'm sharing a screenshot so you can get an idea of what the application looks like.

Cinnamon Clipboard is a clipboard manager for the Cinnamon desktop environment, designed with one main goal in mind: keeping clipboard history simple and easy to use.
You can find more details, features, and installation instructions on the GitHub repository.
A note about AI-assisted development
I also want to be transparent about how this project was developed: Cinnamon Clipboard was created with extensive help from AI. I've explained in more detail how I used AI during development in the project's README.
If you prefer not to use applications developed with AI assistance, I understand, but this project may not be for you. I'd rather be upfront about it so everyone can make an informed decision.
Thanks to everyone who has tried Cinnamon Clipboard, provided feedback, or contributed to the project! ❤️
Feedback and suggestions are always welcome.

SOLVED Why load up the swap file on disk when there is so much free memory?
I had several apps loaded in my 64Gb of Ram. I'm running ComfyUI in --CPU mode as I only hav 8Gb of VRAM on my RX580. The swap file was still unused as I had load of memory spare. When I started running a text-to-picture generation Mint suddenly decided to load a whole load of stuff into the swap file on my hard drive when there was still so much free space in RAM. Why did it do that? Is there a flaw in the memory management module or something? I've noticed it doing similar things before when there was plenty of apparently free memory. It doesn't make any sense as I thought the swap file was strictly for overflow because it's slower. It made the whole system crawl to an almost stop. What can I do to encourage it to only load things into the swap file when the memory is actually full?
UPDATE: Thanks for the responses, I've adjusted the swappiness right down to 1, I'll see how it goes.

Install Help How can I use secure boot with linux mint?
I recently set up a dual-boot system on my Acer Predator with Windows 11 and Linux. Secure Boot is currently enabled.
However, with SB enabled, GRUB (or the Linux EFI bootloader) fails to boot. Windows also failed to boot after I restored the default SB settings in the BIOS. I managed to fix the windows boot issue by using a usb drive to boot SecureBootRecovery.efi.
I’d prefer not to add a trusted EFI file manually through the BIOS unless I have to.
Is there any way to fix this issue and get both Windows and Linux to boot with Secure Boot enabled without manually adding a trusted EFI file?

Discussion Looking for a good full icon theme
I want a nice full icon theme compatible with Linux mint 22.3 Zena cinnamon that has a bit of depth but still keeps a bit of simplicity and doesn't change much of the original icon logo. I am currently using Papirus as my icon theme and i would prefer dark theme if it is there. If you have recommendations then please send with link. Thanks!

Kernel 7.0.0-42 Video Solution
I let this kernel version install today, just like I've done many times before. This is the first time an update did something weird. Watching videos on YouTube, Reddit, and Facebook all showed this kind of green discoloration in various places. I went back to 7.0.0-38 and problem solved. I hope the next kernel update fixes the issue.

Graphics Drivers 1080 TI Driver Issues
My buddy says I'm getting the classic Linux experience in my switch to Mint. At first it was issues with my WiFi card which apparently just happened to be one that didn't play well with Linux so I grabbed a new card no big deal. Now it seems like I'm having driver issues and from what I can tell, it sounds like Linux driver support for the 1080ti. Would my best bet just be to grab a newer card that should have longer support? All of the games I play currently are on Steam and play well with Linux (per protondb) so I'm thinking the only issue can be my graphics drivers? No matter what I'm playing I'm getting like 10FPS max.
TLDR; Should I just get a newer GPU or is there an option for 1080ti that I haven't been able to find or understand yet? 😅😅

I ported NFS Most Wanted Black Edition (2005) to run NATIVELY on Linux Mint - 60 FPS locked on my ThinkPad X270 (HD 620), no Wine / no Emulator
github.comHey Minters!
I ported NFS Most Wanted Black Edition (2005) to run natively on Linux Mint as a real Linux binary (Vulkan + SDL3), no Wine / Emulator needed.
Tested on my ThinkPad X270 (i7-7600U, Intel HD 620, Mint 22.3 XFCE) and it locks at 60 FPS.
It's a .deb package - just install and select your own original Xbox ISO. No pirated files included, it's an open-source preservation project.
No terminal needed:
1. Download .deb from Releases
2. Double-click to install
3. Launch from Games menu

Discussion Switched from windows to linux
I work at a company that provides Windows laptops with a ton of extensions and software installed. I don't even know why so much is necessary, but the experience has been terrible.
My laptop becomes extremely slow just trying to do basic development work. Opening VS Code, asking an AI agent to make changes, running a server through Command Prompt, opening Chrome to check the server, and keeping Jira, SSO, and email open can make the entire computer crash.
And even after closing everything, sometimes I can't get back to work immediately. I open just the agent and try to continue making changes, but the system remains unresponsive for a while.
The frustrating part? I barely have any files on that laptop. Just two cloned repositories for my projects.
After dealing with this frustration, I came home to my personal laptop, which was also running Windows, and realised I was fed up with seeing Windows altogether.
So, I completely removed Windows and installed Linux Mint. I've even done some personal styling with themes, icons, and other customisations.
And honestly, I'm enjoying Linux so far. 😌
Edit: Used AI to format this post, but the thoughts are entirely my own.

Discussion I said i was giving Mint a 30 day run, that was yesterday...
I'm in love already. Having a blast with the terminal. Still tinkering with it to get it set up exactly how I like. I'm having a blast with the learning process. I'll get around to doing some actual productive work.....eventually. I know people like to hate on AI, but it's been a total game changer for me in the learning process and figuring out terminal commands, etc.

Discussion Need some information
Howdy, I've been using a decade-old PC on win10 for the last few years and been intending to just wait to get a newer laptop in a couple months to convert it and the PC both to Linux, but various reasons have led me to think I aught to at least have it downloaded ready to install, and at that point I'm thinking I might just be smart to go ahead and install it soon. But I've got to ask a couple questions.
Firstly, system requirements? I know Linux is praised for being lightweight and all but I also know a potato PC nowadays is about half what this medieval hunk of metal has. How are the requirements on the three editions of Mint? Or more specifically how much do they actually use, especially the RAM and such.
And second is updates. I'm just curious how those work. Am I able to disable them, choose what gets added/changed, etc?
Also curious on the customizability, though I don't have any specifics on that front, just curious if there's interesting things that y'all'd like to mention.
And any other beginner things I may need to know, including what size of a USB stick I need since it seems like I need one of those?
