"What's on?" Wednesday

Our weekly post where people can highlight local events or interesting things that are coming up in the next week. It doesn't have to be your event, but this is a place where reasonable exceptions to our self-promotion rules are allowed. Please check whether the event you're posting about is already mentioned. If you're adding your own event, please try to answer any questions people may have in the comments.

You can also ask questions if you're looking for something to do, e.g. "Does anyone know of a good pub quiz in the centre on Thursday?"

"What's on?" rules:

  1. Leeds based events only
  2. Must be taking place in the next 7 days (next Wednesday included)
  3. Posts highlighting an event should include:
    • Event name
    • Date and time
    • Location
    • Price(s) (if applicable)
  4. A description of the event and a relevant link is recommended but not required

The rules may evolve over time as we find out how things work. Please send any feedback to the mod team.

This weekly thread is an opportunity for locally based small businesses / individuals / bands etc. to let your fellow redditors know what you're about and what you have to offer.

You're welcome to link to your website / store-front / social media, but primarily you should be using your comment to engage with the community here as part of the community. Part of that is taking the time to respond to questions people may ask, please keep that in mind.

The existing subreddit rules still apply, and low-effort comments will be removed (e.g. Links with little to no text).

If you have any thoughts or feedback please message the mods.

social Increase in aggressive begging within the city centre

Has anyone noticed a recent increase in aggressive begging in the city centre? It seems recently loads more than usual are begging, literally coming up to you blocking your path shouting for money. Some seem to be in some kind of trance whilst others are extremely aggressive at one point on Briggate members of the public had to intervene as a begger was loudly shouting at a woman who had ignored him becoming more and more aggressive.

question Loud metallic groaning noise coming from north Leeds somewhere

EDIT: Its a certain aeroplane making a sound! https://youtu.be/8GfhWAVfnVk?si=hEEl8eDUT5T6Ugvq&t=25

(I know, i’m adding to WhErEs ThAt NoIsE cOmInG fRoM?!? list)

It’s definitely not fireworks.

Every few hours, all year we’ve been hearing this sound coming from the direction of Far Headingley/Meanwood/Horsforth - maybe the airport?

It sounds like some kind of sound effect from a Sci-fi film.

I'm in Meanwood.

Anyone else been hearing it? It happened again about 9:50am. Starting to loose my head over it now 😂

question-serious Stolen bass - one of a kind, huge sentimental value

A friend's bass was nicked from Meatlocker studios a day or two ago. It's custom made by a now-dead friend, so has huge sentimental value and is irreplaceable. If anyone sees it around please get in touch. They are incredibly upset by this.

question Help picking up lost phoe

FOUND!

Any kind and honest souls that could help me? My girlfriend lost her phone last night after the Korn gig and didn’t notice until this morning. She is in her way to Norway now and didn’t have time to go back to Leeds to find it. I have the location from her iCloud, is there anyone that is willing to have a look for it and post it to her relatives in London? I would of course pay for postage

transport Bike on a Shipley train commute?

Having moved house and changed jobs I've still not quite got my commute down properly.

I need to work in Shipley two days a week, and live in North Leeds. I want to try commuting without my car, and using the very speedy and convenient trains.

I am by no means a super fit cyclist but I have a largeish heavyish step over bike, which has always suited me fine and I can comfortably cope with distance and hills, and can make it from my door to the train station in 15 mins - but I'm trying to work out how viable it is taking my bike on the train at rush hour to use when I get to the other side.

- Is there usually space on the 7.30am-8.30am trains for bikes? Northern's website says it has space for two bikes per train which sounds... insufficient.

- Does anyone leave their bike at Leeds station and what's the security aspect of that like - is there anywhere that is a safer bet to lock it for the full work day? I could walk the short distance on the Shipley side and leave my bike at Leeds station.

- Should I be looking at a more portable solution eg. a folding bike? I've never found them too comfortable as a taller person with longer legs but I feel like there should be an option for me in this day and age.

Any thoughts welcomed!

question-serious Is every household in Leeds 7 having issues with Yorkshire Water?

Our water went off from late Sunday afternoon until Monday evening, and we’ve just had a text saying it might go off again because they still can’t find the source of the problem. YW kindly offered free water from Oatland Green last night, but we’d already spent £25 buying bottled water from the shop by that time and was also settled for the night by then 🙄

I just hope they’re checking that elderly and vulnerable people are okay, especially those who might struggle to get water themselves.

Anyone previously done the Abbey dash 10k and know how strict they are regarding earphones? Website says they need to be bone conducting but I’m reluctant to spend £80 for one 10k run

question Could someone do some laser cutting for me? 1mm clear acrylic.

I've got a project on the go that uses a couple of small bits of 1mm thick clear plastic. I've tried cutting by hand, but it's not great looking, so I'm hoping there might be someone with a CO2 laser who would be able to help out.

It would be a 26x26x1mm square and a slightly larger one I can't remember exactly now with a 3mm radius on the corners.

If it's possible, I would like to try a surface pattern on the 26x26 one, either to slightly frost it or a specific pattern of dots, but that's secondary, I really just want to get some clean cuts.

question City centre petrol stations with jet wash

Hey all! I hope you’ve survived the wind.

I have a very specific question. I’m wondering if anyone knows of petrol stations near the city centre (Leeds Dock) that have coin operated jet washes. Not car washes: specifically jet wash machines.

It’s getting into soggy season and living in the city centre makes washing a huge mountain bike a little tricky. The idea is I can just ride to/via a petrol station to hose the worst of it off before coming home. I’ll be on the bike (i.e. not with the car) so a short pedal away is ideal.

I know for a fact there’s one on Dewsbury Road as I use that one on the ride back from LUBP. But if anyone knows of any others that definitely have jet wash machines, I’d be grateful for any intel.

Thanks in advance!

Update: Thanks for stellar answers. Some good options for me there.
