Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

→ Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

→ Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Offering English Offering:English Seeking:English

• Upvotes

I am 26 years old (female), and my English proficiency is between A2 and B1. I am looking for a study partner—someone at my level or higher—with whom I can practice speaking English. I’ve noticed that I’m often able to spot my own mistakes when I speak to myself, so if you face similar challenges, perhaps we could work together on our English learning journey. Please send me a message if you are interested.

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: Russian/English Seeking: Korean

• Upvotes

Hi. I'm 22 and I'm looking for people to practice Korean language. My Korean lvl is basic I've learned it for half of a year. So especially I'd like to find someone native to practice and get some cultural exchange too. But if you're just learning Korean, we could learn and practice it together!
Anyway I can help you with English or Russian as well. (My Russian is native and my English is fluent tho)

I have a lot of hobbies. Workouts, singing, watching movies or youtube, sometimes I can play some games if I have a free time. I also love cooking and baking. Also I'm working and studying.

Offering Korean Offering: Korean | Seeking: English

Hi, I'm native korean, 30 M, living in Incheon(close to airport and near Seoul).

I'm finding kind of Online-penpal, using Reddit DM.

It would be great if we can extend to speaking and meeting, but my language level and circumstance are not sufficient for these at this moment.

I think my english level is around A1~B2,

when it comes to reading and writing. (speaking? maybe around A1~A2?)

If you are interested in learning korean, you can choose topics anything you want - K-cultures are welcomed, too. (ah, the word "welcomed" reminds me to say that both males and females are welcomed)

I will usually send you DMs around 22:30~24:00 KST(UTC/GMT +9) , not everyday - maybe 2~4 days a week. But time is ADJUSTABLE. Feel free to DM or reply to me, I can handle schedule.

And if you need help for korean speaking, I can phone call with you in korean, 1~2days on weekends.

Thanks for reading, I wish you to have a nice day.

Offering Portuguese Offering: Brazilian Portuguese; seeking: English, French (conversational), German (going into B1)

• Upvotes

Hello! I am 24yo, from Brazil, I am a grad student in humanities/social sciences, mostly interested for the humanities/social sciences. But I also like writing, art, walking/running, gadgets, traveling, eating well, cinema, and language learning. I wouldn't know how to describe myself politically nowadays , but perhaps I could just say I am a left social liberal and leave at that. I would say I am very curious and can be moderately funny at times. (People do laugh at my jokes.)

I want to practice English, French, or German. I would say I am fairly conversational in French or English — though it depends on the day, apparently, and I stutter a lot in English for some reason. (One of the reasons why I want to practice it.) As for German, I am going through a B1 course. I am not particularly conversant in it, but I think I could gain something from some practice with a native, be through writing or/and speaking. I would be willing to help you, in exchange, with your Portuguese and to teach you more about Brazil and Brazilian culture.

Offering Mandarin Offering: Mandarin Chinese (Native) | Seeking: English (Native)

• Upvotes

If you’re a native English speaker who happens to be interested in learning Chinese, maybe we could help each other learn.
I’m a native Chinese speaker looking to improve my English. I have a deeper understanding of the Chinese language than the average native speaker, and I believe learning from native speakers is one of the most effective ways to learn a language.
But there’s something I’ve noticed that many people don’t realize: Being a native speaker doesn’t necessarily mean you’re good at teaching your own language.
Most native speakers rely on intuition. They naturally know what sounds right, but when you start asking deeper questions about why something is said a certain way, they often struggle to explain it.
Eventually, the answer becomes: “I don’t know why. That’s just how we say it.”
I enjoy digging into the logic, meanings, and nuances behind Chinese words and expressions, rather than simply telling someone to memorize them.
If you’re interested in that kind of language exchange, I’d be happy to learn together!

Offering English Offering- English (u.s accent native fluency) seeking- French ,German, Other?

Hello ,

I'm hoping to find a conversation partner for either French or German language to video chat with once per week for a conversation ! I'm open to learning a language other than those if your willing to teach but I would be starting from scratch with most other languages.

I only know spoken french at the most basic level and written a bit more. I'd like to have more conversations in french about normal stuff maybe I could read a paragraph and get a critique on accent and general chit chat. I'm using chess to help me learn so it could be a plus if you're a chess player.

My German is slightly stronger maybe a b2? I'm hoping to gain better conversational fluency and make German language a part of my life regularly.

My English is very good, I speak with an American accent and can help you with your language questions , pronunciation, or try to explain anything that confuses you.

If your interested in practicing your English skills and would like to teach me some of your language id be really interesting in attempting it.

We could talk about languages, computers , gardening, hobbies , sports, it's all good. Forgot to mention! 36/m

Offering Russian Offering: Russian | Seeking: English, Japanese, Italian

Hi there. I'm 28M. I'm a programmer who loves learning different things. I study gamedev, pixel art and new programming language Zig. I'm native Russian as you understand already probably. Also I'm a streamer, a speedrunner (some games are fun to complete it as fast as possible) and sometimes watch Anime with English subs. One more thing, I regularly read some psychology bc it's an interesting field.

My English level is about B2, but my writing skills aren't great (speaking is terrible). I wanna fix that

I was learning Japanese for three months, so I don't even have N5

What about Italian... I know some phrases and words. That's it

Thx for reading. Looking forward to speaking with u if my post clicked 💜
