What 737 home cockpit part can't you buy, or can't buy at a sensible price?

Hi all, I'm a mechanical designer (SolidWorks, sheet metal) and a long-time sim fan. I'm thinking about making small all-metal 737 modules, but before I design anything I want to know what is actually missing rather than guess.

Three quick questions:

  1. What 737 part have you looked for and couldn't find, or couldn't afford?

  2. What did you end up doing: DIY, 3D print, salvage, or go without?

  3. For a plug-and-play metal version (USB, works with PMDG and MobiFlight), what would you realistically pay for: autobrake, rudder/aileron trim, fire panel, something else?

Not selling anything and there's no link. I'll post a summary of the answers here in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

My Thrustmaster Sky Yoke review... compact and complete, with compromises

Post image

Hi simmers!

Just posted my review of the Thrustmaster Sky Yoke, which is probably going to be a hit for console+PC gamers this Christmas.

Can't beat the features -- it's compact, fast to setup and pull down (under 2 mins). It's an easy pathway into flight sims... unless you're looking at something more accurate as a flight training tool.

Looking for advice on full scale Boeing 737 simulator

Hi everyone!

I was hoping to get some advice. I am not a sim expert but I have this Boeing 737 simulator that has been left here thanks to a messy divorce.

I am trying to get some insights into what it might be worth, the logistics involved in relocating it, and where I might find the right audience for something like this.

It seems like quite a niche market. I know it cost well over AUD $150,000 to build, with parts ordered from all over the world. But I assume it is not worth nearly as much as it cost to build given it was a hobby project?

At first I thought about selling it for parts because I could not get it working, but I figured it would be worth more if it were fully operational. So I had a consultant come in who managed to get it running again.

It is now fully operational. I believe Prosim is the main software, but the consultant also built custom software for bootups and diagnostics. It is based in Australia but I am wondering if there would be an international market for something like this, or if shipping it overseas would be too hard.

I was also wondering about dismantling and rebuilding it at a new location. Would it be worth offering the services of my consultant to help, or is that something you sim guys would know how to do?

I built a website with photos and all the specifications if anyone wants a closer look.

My questions:

  1. Roughly what is something like this worth, complete versus split up?
  2. Who would typically buy something like this, and where would be the best places to find them?
  3. Is it generally better to keep something like this together or sell the parts individually?
  4. What are the logistics involved in dismantling, shipping and rebuilding something like this?
  5. Anything else you think I should know?

What's included:

  • Full-scale Boeing 737-800 cockpit replica, complete with cockpit shell, authentic-style flight deck layout, pilot and co-pilot seats and windows
  • Fully equipped flight deck with overhead panels, MCP, EFIS, main instrument panel and dual CDU units
  • CockpitForYou motorised throttle quadrant and complete centre pedestal
  • Immersive panoramic visual system with three projectors displaying onto a large curved wraparound screen
  • Three networked high-performance computers, including one equipped with an NVIDIA RTX 4090 graphics card
  • Integrated ProSim737 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 software
  • Additional custom-developed software for automated startup, system diagnostics and simulator management

The simulator is fully operational, with the hardware, software and visual systems integrated into one complete setup.

If anyone can point me in the right direction or offer any tips, that would be amazing. Any help would be very much appreciated!

My setup is finally done

I am finally done. Mostly Winctrl panel. My autopilot panel is by SimGauges and my flight stick is the Moza AB9. I know I got the right hand stick on it right now but I am waiting for the left handed version. The wiring was painful but the custom box when the moza AB9 is was even more. The seat is from an Dodge Caravan from the early 2000s.

I haven't done a full flight yet as I was too tired last night after completing it. I will report back once I do.

A320 CPT Home cockpit, single seat cost

Post image
25 Upvotes

In the situation where I've already got my PC and all the required gear for a single seat A320 home cockpit (probably early/mid next year), how much would it cost to DIY a home cockpit, similar to the one above? I'm planning to also invest in a 3D printer, like a Bambu Labs A1, but if not I'd probably buy the panels from etsy etc.

I'm planning to buy the patreon for sim guy a320 project, but to be honest don't really know where to start - probably need to find a CNC cutting place first. Though I am considering getting the Core flight Technologies MIP frame just to ease the load. I'm living in HK, so places to CNC are a little scarce.

My budget would be about 1500 pounds - any further advice on how to manage it would be amazing. Thanks.

All panels but the ARC-51 (UHF) finally assembled and soldered. Not the final placement on the stack. Just like to place them on the Dzus rails to ensure fitting.
COMM/NAV
ADF
FM
Intercom

Have been trying to source a real ARC-51 to do the conversion but so far have not found one so will probably be doing the acrylic panel style (like the FM) instead.

What else can you export from DCS besides the MFDs?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on a custom F-16C cockpit setup in DCS and experimenting with exporting the cockpit displays to separate monitors.

I know that the left and right MFDs can be exported using a custom MonitorSetup.lua file, but I'm wondering what else can be exported.

For example, is it possible to export the DED, EHSI, RWR, fuel gauge, engine instruments, warning lights, or other cockpit displays and instruments?

I'm particularly interested in whether analog instruments, such as gauges with moving needles, can be exported as individual displays or whether their values can be read through Export.lua and used to recreate the instruments in a separate program.

I'd appreciate any information about what's possible with the F-16C specifically, which methods or tools are required, and whether some displays require additional scripts or modifications.

Thanks!

Here’s my current setup for the A320. I’m looking forward to adding the winctrl overhead panel when it’s released and maybe I’ll build another small pedestal for the sidestick and tiller.

Bringing a flight simulator back to life

Post image
55 Upvotes

I’ve recently acquired a full-size flight simulator as a restoration project. It was completely non-functional when I got it.

It runs X-Plane 9.7 across two PCs, one Windows and one Ubuntu, driving five displays.

So far I’ve managed to get both computers running again, but I still need to sort out what appears to be a corrupted configuration to get the visuals working.

I’m also troubleshooting a faulty force-feedback yoke and have some replacement electronic components on the way.

The centre pedestal doesn’t seem to work either, although I haven’t investigated much beyond checking power and connections.

It’s also mounted on a basic motion platform, which I haven’t even attempted to get running yet.

Plenty left to do, but it’s slowly coming back to life!

Quick video question

If I have onboard video as well as a separate video card, can I use the onboard video to power a touchscreen that I'd like to use for a virtual streamdeck and use the video card for my gaming monitors and cockpit displays? Is this possible?

Building a CJ4 Home Cockpit: There's More Behind the Panels Than You Think

Thumbnail
gallery
11 Upvotes

I've been designing and building a full-scale Cessna Citation CJ4 home cockpit from scratch, and I thought I'd share a look at the engineering behind one of the panels.

These three renders show my latest Audio Panel design, starting with the complete assembly, then revealing the dedicated LED backlighting PCB and a second PCB underneath that houses the buttons and switches.

It's pretty amazing how much goes into something that looks relatively simple from the pilot's seat!

A quick project update:

  • Six new panel prototypes are currently in production.
  • Nearly every panel in the cockpit is fully designed.
  • Roughly 85% of the custom PCBs are designed.
  • The next batch of electronics should arrive in November.

I'm documenting the entire process, including the successes, mistakes, and lessons learned. I'm also making my CAD files, PCB designs, and other resources freely available to registered members so other builders can use them.

It's been a massive undertaking, but seeing everything slowly come together has been incredibly rewarding.

If you're interested in following the build or checking out the designs, here's my latest update:

https://525charlie.com/where-did-september-and-october-go/

I'd also love to hear from anyone working on their own cockpit or custom flight sim hardware. What are you building?

Head movement and home cockpits

I am thinking about getting a meta quest 3 to have the head movement in simulators like WT sim, IL2 etc. as smooth as possible.

But I also always wanted a proper home cockpit.

I assume you don’t play these massive setups in your homes with VR googles as you wouldn’t be able to find the buttons etc.

So how do you manage the head movements in dogfights etc. when you are siming?

I have tried headtrackers based on the webcam but especially if you want to look over your shoulder those tend to not cut it. Or maybe I am too stupid to set them up properly.

What is your solution that you use?
Or am I wrong that VR plus home cockpit works?

Edit: I have a 49 inch ultra wide screen I am planing to continue to use
