Hi everyone, I’m looking for help troubleshooting my GIGABYTE G5 KF5 (2023) with an RTX 4060.
This is the third time in the last four weeks that my laptop has failed to turn on after the lid was accidentally closed during operation. The first two times, I somehow managed to get it working again within about an hour. This time, it has been almost a full day and it still won’t turn on.
When I press the power button, its LED flashes once, but the fans don’t spin. The screen stays black and there’s no POST. The power indicators light up when the charger is connected.
Over the last four weeks, the lid has accidentally been closed three times during normal operation. Each time, the same issue occurred afterward.
During the first two incidents, I managed to get the laptop running again within about an hour. I’m not sure what helped. I randomly plugged and unplugged the charger, held the power button, and tried turning it on again. After it started working, it ran flawlessly for several days or weeks.
Before the latest incident, the laptop had been working normally all day and was connected to AC power overnight. I believe I shut it down properly, but I may have closed the lid before the shutdown had fully completed. I’m not entirely sure. In the morning, I found that it wouldn’t turn on. The room temperature was around 19°C.
Current symptoms:
*The indicator LEDs turn on when the charger is connected.
*The AC power indicator stays solid amber.
*The battery indicator was initially green. After disconnecting the charger for about 30 minutes and reconnecting it, it turned amber, then later green again.
*The power button LED flashes once when pressed.
*The fans don’t spin at all.
*The screen remains black; there’s no POST.
*I tested all USB ports. When I press the power button, connected USB devices briefly receive power or start charging.
I’m running BIOS F12, released in July 2025.
What I’ve tried:
*Disconnected the internal main battery and tried starting on AC power only. No change.
*Disconnected the CMOS battery. No change.
*Disconnected both the main battery and charger, then held the power button for 60 seconds. No change.
*Reconnected both batteries and the charger and tried again. Same result.
I’m suspicious of the lid sensor or embedded controller (EC) because, on several previous occasions, the laptop shut down or entered a similar unresponsive state when an iPad case with magnets touched the lower-right area of the laptop.
Could the Hall-effect lid sensor be incorrectly detecting the lid position, or could the EC be getting stuck? Is it possible that closing the lid triggers a fault that prevents the laptop from completing its startup sequence, as if it still thinks the lid is closed?
I realize it could also be a problem with the EC, BIOS, power circuitry, or motherboard.
The laptop is about four years old. I replaced the thermal paste and both fans about six months ago.
Has anyone experienced something similar with the GIGABYTE G5 KF? Is there a way to test or disable the lid sensor at the BIOS or EC level? Could a stuck EC cause these symptoms, with no fans spinning and no POST?
If I manage to get it running again, what should I do first to diagnose or prevent this from happening again?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
