💬Discussion Why don’t teams openly shop for different members of coaching staff?

• Upvotes

Like I know this is America brain but the coaching staff is picked out and coaches are openly shopped for apart from the head coach like I know set peice/gk coaches are a thing but why isn’t their an possession or out of possession coach whos job is to specialize in these things and work for the manager. Like there are so many managers that are good at man management but are rubbish tactically that could lean on a hypothetical tactical coach.

Let's know more about cryuff by combining what i know and what you guys know.

• Upvotes

I see many of current generation culers have no idea what or who Cryuff was i am posting a bit about him and you guys who know other stuff about him pitch in to make this post complete.

Hendrik Johannes "Johan" Cruyff (25 April 1947 – 24 March 2016) was a Dutch professional football player and manager, widely considered the single most influential figure in the history of modern football. While legends like Pelé, Maradona, and Messi are celebrated for their playing brilliance, Cruyff is uniquely revered for revolutionising the sport twice: first on the pitch as the conductor of "Total Football", and later on the touchline as the tactical architect behind modern possession-based football.

Making his first-team debut in 1964, he partnered with coach Rinus Michels to pioneer Total Football (Totaalvoetbal)—a revolutionary tactical system where no outfield player was fixed to a nominal position; if one player moved out of position, a teammate seamlessly filled the space.

He led Ajax to three consecutive European Cups (1971, 1972, 1973) before moving to FC Barcelona in 1973 for a world-record transfer fee. In his first season in Spain, he helped Barcelona win their first La Liga title in 14 years (including a historic 5–0 victory over rivals Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu).

After retirement he was no less of a manager than any other, Cruyff returned to Barcelona in 1988. He overhauled the club, leading them to four consecutive La Liga titles (1991–1994) and their very first European Cup in 1992 at Wembley. That's only a half of why he is most goated manager of Barca.....

The Famous La masia- he wanted the Barca way of football into players right from young age that's why

Cruyff insisted that every youth team at Ajax and Barcelona play the exact same 4-3-3 attacking, possession-focused system as the senior squad. He prioritized technical intelligence, quick passing, and spatial awareness over physical size—a philosophy that later produced players like Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, and Lionel Messi.

Random - he also mentored Pep which built a foundation for his extraordinary managerial career.

💬Discussion Football as We Know It Is OBVIOUSLY Going to Change, RIGHT?

I mean, given the tactical direction football is taking, I think it's clear that football is definitely going to change. Nowadays, everything is about analyzing things and then putting that analysis into practice. Pressing has reached unimaginable levels. Nowadays, most teams use man-oriented pressing, and playing out from the back as well as maintaining possession is becoming increasingly difficult (with counter-pressing too). Space is also overanalyzed, and I think all of this has several consequences.

First of all, I think football is going to become a sport that's less and less suited to television (as a spectator sport). Secondly, players are clearly being affected by a process of robotization. They have to operate (primarily, but not exclusively) according to the manager's tactics, which, like football itself, are constantly evolving through new innovations and so on. Players are still human, so certain player profiles will disappear because they won't be productive enough anymore, making way for other profiles. And above all, players are going to suffer more and more injuries (far more than they do now), and they're especially going to retire much earlier.

So either we inevitably continue down this path, or football is going to change. That's why I think the game is bound to change.

I'm not saying that everything I've mentioned is necessarily going to happen, but that's the direction things are heading in...

Edit:By the way, I didn't specify this, but when I talk about changes, I'm thinking of things like the length of matches, for example, although plenty of other things could change too.

Major Chinese brands drop Mbappe as backlash grows over Chairman Mao meme

Bit of a weird one, Mbappe was recently asked on French TV show 'The Bridge' about his favourite memes which he mentioned - some about Henry, and some depicting himself as a dictator, including one showing him as Chairman Mao. The original video has now been removed from the shows Youtube channel but has already circulated on social media.

Today several Chinese brands have cut ties with Mbappe as they see it as mocking political figure Mao Zedong, who is revered by their communist party. Even China's foreign ministry spokesperson Lian Jian has weighed in. Neither Mbappe nor The Bridge have commented yet.

I didn't have a meme with Mbappe causing an international incident with China on my bingo card but here we are.

*La Liga president Javier Tebas has now made a statement, also coming out from La Ligas corporate account, damage control time.

Mbappe has now publicly apologised for his comments.

💬Discussion Is it time to start having 2 coaches or managers?

I remembered once houllier became the joint manager of liverpool together with roy evans. thought it was pretty weird. it didn't last long.

but it's 2026, maybe it's time to start having 2 coaches or managers? one can be man management. the other can be tactics. and the rest can split. and one can be the bad cop, and the other can be the good cop. what do you all think?

I mean if they do a 3 peat and win the champions league again, and win the team of the year again next year at the Ballon Dor, they will be deemed as one of the great footballing dynasties in modern football history.

💬Discussion Judging a player based off his world cup campaign makes ZERO sense

I get the importance of the world, a player having a good or bad campaign shouldn't soley be decided by their world cup campaign. It's a TEN MONTHS long season and that should be the major factor on deciding award during the world cup. Unai simon won best goalkeeper and that makes no sense considering he's not even top 5 this season. Sure he had a good world cup; didn't really do much bcoz spain had a tight defense. That's not to take anything away from him bcoz he clearly played an important role too nonetheless.

It's just unfair to other gk who don't get the acknowledgment bcoz they don't play for a team like spain

Same thing in 2018? when Modric won. That's just my option. Maybe i’m missing a point. Lmk

Major title winning managers per club. I noticed Man Utd are strangely low on the list

I've crunched the numbers and discovered that in the post-war period the number of managers per English club who have won either the league title or European Cup is as follows:

7 Liverpool
6 Chelsea
5 Arsenal
4 Man City
2 Villa, Everton, Man Utd, Spurs

And across Europe it is:

21 Bayern
18 Real Madrid
14 Barca
11 Milan

One conclusion that can be drawn from this is that for all of Man Utd's might as a super club, their entire postwar success is thanks to two (incredible) managers. The same number as Villa, Everton and Spurs.
Without them they're nothing, which speaks to a real problem of being unable to withstand the loss of key personnel. This isn't a new problem for them, they struggled post-Busby and they're now struggling post-Ferguson.
Ferguson was so gifted that he made them Britains biggest club, but on this metric perhaps we should actually be thinking of them as just another Spurs…

Edit: the list comprises of the top eight trophy winners in England. The ninth club on that list (Newcastle) has won neither the league title or European club post-war, so seemed a natural place to stop the list otherwise there would be a huge raft of teams on 1 including the likes of Burnley, Ipswich and Portsmouth.

💬Discussion Alex Ferguson has warped the long history of Manchester Utd. Before Alex Ferguson, Utd had 7 league titles and he ended a 26 year drought. This is their norm. Fergie was their lightning in a bottle.

1.3k Upvotes

Ferguson was incredible, and Utd are just above average without him. He won THIRTEEN of their 20 titles.

Before he arrived....

Liverpool - 18
Arsenal - 10
Everton - 9
Villa - 7
Sunderland - 6

The guy made 2+ generations of people forget that Utd were not anywhere near the powerhouse they were in his time...before he arrived.

The last 13 years are no different to the 26 years they suffered before his arrival.

EDIT - 12 years before Fergie arrived, Utd got relegated. The truth hurts, UTD fans. But it is the truth.

💬Discussion We need to rethink penalty kicks

If a defender commits a foul at the corner of the penalty area, while the attacking player has their back to the goal, or there's a ton of other players around, and there's no obvious goal scoring opportunity - why hand out a free goal? Seems highly excessive, particularly if the defender is making an honest attempt at the ball. Especially when vast majority of penalty kicks result in a goal being scored.

I think a foul in the box should always be penalized with a yellow card. But it should not always result in a penalty kick, unless the attacking player has an obvious goal scoring opportunity which is stopped by the foul.

💬Discussion How many goals will we see in El Clásico tonight — and who scores more?

The last 10 Clásicos have produced 46 goals. That’s 4.6 per game.

9/10 had at least 3 goals

Both teams scored in 8/10

Barcelona won 6, Real Madrid won 4

No draws

Real Madrid kept 0 clean sheets

Barcelona kept only 2

The attacking numbers are close too:

Barcelona: 15.7 shots | 6.9 on target per game

Real Madrid: 14.0 shots | 6.4 on target per game

So let’s make it simple before kick-off:

How many total goals tonight?

And who scores more — Barcelona or Real Madrid?

💬Discussion Why is England so focused on the “Premier League” instead of just the “English League”?

In any other country, nobody cares about what the league is called. It’s just the country’s top league and who became champions, but in England, everyone only cares about what specifically happened in the time it has been called Premier League. The first time I’ve ever seen people say anything else was when Liverpool won their 20th league title, but any other occasion, it’s Premier League exclusively. Liverpool’s 19th league title was spoken about as if it was their first league title ever. For a country so keen on its history, it’s very interesting to just wipe everything before 1992 off the planet. Nobody would ever correct

Don’t get me wrong, other countries also don’t know their champions of 1963, but we don’t just erase that history. I mean, try telling anybody Real Madrid only won 9 “Champions Leagues” and see who takes you seriously.

Was there a massive change in 1992 that explains why the ‘90 season is so different from ‘92?
