How many flies for a week in Alaska?
I’m going self guided. Primarily river fishing, Anchorage, kenai, homer. I’ll
Be there 9 days, fishing for 7. Targeting silver salmon, sockeye, and pink. Will take some time for dolly and rainbows too.
Me, my partner, teenage son, mom and dad. My mom isn’t very mobile and will probably throw spinners off a dock or bait where possible.
The teen and partner have fly fished a dozen days on rivers but usually from a boat in very productive water (middle fork salmon, Idaho).
My dad had fly fished once. We will be in a group of 10 with wildly assorted skill levels and interest levels.
I’m mildly obsessed with tying everything myself, using a lot of stuff I have gathered, harvested and thrifted. As a result I have a ton of material. I just added a dozen pink flies in 3 patterns each today for 36 more flies.
So how many flies for roughly 4 people for 7 days of wading fishing. Every time I look in the box it feels very full. When I divide it 4 ways I feel under gunned.
I can see myself landing on 2-3 productive patterns and burning through all of them while leaving the majority untouched. This is how my river trips usually go. Use 24 orange stimulators until they are gone. Use all my pheasant tails and be left with stuff half as productive.
But I feel silly going up with 400 flies. I probably have 100 non-egg flies tied. I have no idea how many eggs I’ve tied. I have enough material for 1000+ more streamers if that is my desire. I went pretty overboard.
I typically carry a couple hundred dries on a week long river trip and use maybe 30. But when my kids start fishing it is 30 a day.
Advice would be nice from anyone who has done this type of trip.
I know there are plenty of shops up there and I can always buy more but I’m going to have heartache over paying $6 for a dolly lama I can tie for 50 cents.
But somehow a $700 plane ticket is fine.

First Elk Hair Caddis Type
This one was kinda tough. I used deer hair instead of elk. I feel like I put too much material right near the eye. Will be doing more of this pattern soon to practice. This is addicting

Steelhead box help
I started putting together a box for NE Ohio steelhead. I’ve got taco eggs, sucker spawn and white zonkers so far. What are some favorite patterns for these fish? Looking to tie up a bunch and fill this box.

Just starting out and already addicted
Thanks to this sub for suggesting Charlie’s fly box for how-to vids. The Venture Fly Co videos have also been a great resource for a beginner such as myself and would highly recommend!

Deer Hair
I tried using Comparadun hair for the collar to make the profile smaller but I’m not sure if I like it. Size 6 B10S

Premium bucktail
I'm tying a fly order that is mostly big stuff for Canadian Pike and Musky, including some 10" long flies like Popovic's Beast and Double Bufords. I'm thinking I'm going to want the high-end bucktail for this. Since Primo Tail is no longer available, my next choice is Musky Fool's MF-A grade hair, but it's out of stock at present. I've been looking at Marabou Bros. "El Presidente" grade. Does anyone know if one of these is superior to the other, or if there's another brand I should be considering that I don't know about?
I don't live anywhere near a fly shop that would carry stuff like this, so it's going to have to be ordered online.

How to tie?
The nymph changer has a really buggy body, how would you tie that? I can’t seem to get it right with squirrel or hare in a dubbing loop. It just gets brushed out into long strands and falls out.
The two tone changer: is this tied like an EP baitfish; clumps tied on top and bottom, or is there some technique to get top/bottom contrast with the chenille wraps?
Any good videos of making these resin tails like on the gamechanger?

Love the eyes
Love the look of this dumbbell eye. I didn’t used to care if they had pupils or not but I think it looks much better with one. Fish probably don’t care one way or another

Relaxing UV chenille, tips?
I’ve got 4 colors of uv polar chenille I’m working with and it seems almost like a toss up on the fiber composition. The white i have lays totally flat out of the bag. The olive does similarly. But the purple and black are a snarly mess. Is there a way to relax the material at all? I don’t think it will mess with the end product, but the stray fibers are messy to look at
