Some thoughts as I think more about Leda's route, her Part 3 supports (of those ive seen), and reading some criticisms of her route since she seems to be the most controversial one out of the four.
The comparison point between Dimitri from Three Houses is really really obvious, and that does invite a lot of comparisons of how both stories treated their respective lords writing and quality-wise. And while I agree to a good chunk of the Leda route criticisms, I do think by the end of it I still prefer how her revenge story goes compared to Dimitri's.
But laying out said criticisms I agree with: Buccar's betrayal not having a truly proper resolution (you only see why Buccar stays and maybe even why Leda still tolerates him in Cai's route); *to* an extent how much revenge and anger takes up Leda's character compared to Dimitri who at least has WC and his post-redemptiom chapters; the ending not feeling quite as satisfying or somberly cathartic as it was in Azure Moon; the offscreen death of Mahna who was Leda's primary antagonist (really egregious tbh); not enough scenes with her and Aswan especially (needed 3 more scenes at least).
Those are a notable amount of flaws, and I understand those that come away not liking or even disliking Leda's route after it, especially by how Part 2 and 3's narratives don't really allow for her to have a moment in the spotlight compared to Theodora, Bertrand, and Fortuna.
Despite that, call it a low bar if you like, I do really still love this route. Much of it due to how much FW allows Leda to be incredibly messy and act in ways that are straight up evil, like her attempt at subduing Orchel, or the cruel shit she says to Cai. How she lets her soul open for Balor to corrupt more just so she could get more power to win the games. Tbh its the same novelty I like Edelgard for as otherwise in another game, she would just be a villain—I cannot imagine for example the universe where Betrand or Ochel's routes took precedence, everyone would hate her lmao.
But otherwise, its the same reasons I like Dimitri for how they wrote her. Revenge consumed her life, to the point its the only reason she kept living after her massacre—the analogy of it being an unhealthy addiction is more prominent compared to Dimitri's. She is a broken woman with suicidal thoughts who blames herself for what happened in Kassite (as she unknowingly let Lechner in the city's walls), and her revenge against Bertrand is the only thing stopping her from slitting her own throat, as she NEEDS to blame someone to ease at her own guilt. Rose Tempest have seen the good and kindness in her, but don't know how to save Leda, all they can do is be there for her and do whatever they can to stop her from going off the deep-end. Her relationship with Olympia is such a big highlight. I like how Fire Emblem allowed for a female lord to be so messy and deranged, without feeling insecure by making sure she still acted cute for the audience to still like her for (CF Edelgard getting scared by rats and Byleth finding it cute my beloathed).
But speaking of avatars—that is probably why I love Leda's story at least a fair bit more than Dimitri's. It does not rely on Eshmel for her development anywhere near as vitally Dimitri's was with Byleth. I do think his ending is better, and having 24 chapters basically does give him a lot more time and moments to flesh Dimitri and his story out, but Byleth is such a sore point tbh.
By contrast, Eshmel shows up about 2-3 times to save Leda from death such as the Risen Dead Banquet. They otherwise do not become a major part of her development as a character, which I thank God for. And even if I do think the ending just barely justified why Leda wouldn't kill him right there on the ground, I honestly appreciate that it was because of her own journey, her own sidecast, and her own justifications that lead her to sparing Bertrand's life. That she couldn't ignore the Arago conspiracy anymore, how Mahdel betrayed her twice but never did anything but show love to her (and sacrificing himself to save her), how Bertrand didnt resist anymore or beg for his life unlike Bjor or Balboa, Aswan pleading that Bertrand isnt the monster she thinks he is. Killing Bertrand is akin to Leda killing herself, and I honestly found it to be what I sorta wanted Dimitri's to be.
Dimitri's redemption is the most critical point of his story, but it unfortunately didnt land with me. Post-rodrigue Dimitri is a great character, and his supports are among the best in the game, and I love his ending—but the foundations of his redemption felt too rotten for me.
I found Rodrigue's death incredibly contrived. Byleth can use divine pulse, why are they letting Dimitri's other father figure die like how it happened with Jeralt? Maybe they think Byleth needs Dimitri to know the consequences of his actions and thus doesnt save him? That would be an interesting wrinkle for them as a chatacter if they actually could be treated as one.
Byleth holding Dimitri's hands in the rain is genuinely a really good scene as long as I'm headcanoning an AO3 Byleth's personality to them, otherwise I wish this scene could've been with any of the blue lions. Dedue especially. Speaking of, he should not be optional—I dislike how Dedue gets sidelined because of the possibility of not doing his paralogue. The only BL worth a damn of doing anything during Boar Dimitri's madness was Felix—I at least appreciate how Rose Tempest often didn't know what to do to help Leda, or helped her as much as they could while making sure to stop her from anybwirse thoughts. Byleth being central to his redemption gere takes it away from me due to how bland I find them.
And the fact that soon after, he gets "better" (I know he doesnt hes still mentally troubled) and comes to his old self again, I sorta don't like either. I really think a month of mourning and Dimitri processing Byleth's words, with him being unavailable as a unit up until that month's end, would have helped with showcasing the Battle of Gronder Field's affect on him. It feels like they wanted to rush this as much as they could so that players could play "good" Dimitri again.
I do overall think Leda's route had more issues writing wise than Dimitri's, but beyond me subjectively not being bothered by them as much, what really sealed the deal was the lack of an avatar as the central development for all of Parts 1 and 2. All of the Flame lords more or less solve their personal emotional conflicts (mostly) by the end of their routes before Eshmel and Fortuna take the spotlight. Their teams and their journeys were what saved them metaphorically, till Eshmel saves them literally in Part 2. Whereas Bylelth is a vital morality pet from beginning to end for each of the House Lords in 3H, and Byleth unfortunately is just too silent and bland for me to appreciate what they do for each one's route unless I headcanon fanfics for their personality.
Holy shit this got so long I apologize. All that said I dont dislike AM—probably still 3H's best story route tbh. I wish VW and CF got that same love. I just sorta wanted to lay this out for myself and see if any agree or disagree. I honestly really love the comparisons and contrasts between Dimitri and Leda.
TL;DR Byleth fucks up Dimitri's story a bit for me, I like Leda's because her team is more involved and very little Eshmel.
