It's Monday. Summer is winding down. Time to start thinking about doing all of the "getting ready for winter" you've been putting off all season. Time to be filled with existential dread for the cold darkness that will soon enough envelop us all...

So, in the spirit of ignoring that here's a place to mention any sort of event/meeting/whatever that people might not know about and might not warrant it's own post. Hopefully somebody has the something to help you keep procrastinating!

My mom is in her early 50s and is struggling to make social connections. Shes typically introverted, and doesn’t drink. (I believe this is contributing to the issue, as a lot of local social events involve alcohol.) My mom is super cool, and I’m sure she would make friends if she put herself out there. Does anyone have any suggestions on good activities or events she could participate in? Maybe similar to a book club or some sort of group that meets regularly?

Hello, we live in So Cal, are 68 yrs old, and have desire to see the Northern Lights before one of us dies. Looking around the dates for the new moon in. December, 12/8, and the places AI says are great to watch the lights from are all booked for this period of new moon in December.
My question- if we stay in Fairbanks - and yhe night is clear, is it easy to drive to a Northern lights viewing spot?

Moving to Fairbanks from the lower 48 and I was curious which ISPs local online gamers use and/or hate? Or what the options realistically are? I've done some research but I haven't seen many people specify what they're using their high speed internet for. Just gathering info, thanks!

Alright, from now through the end of this election cycle, we've decided to cram all things political into one spot!

In this one spot every week feel free to share any news, events, links, topics, slander, whatever specifically related to politics your happy lil' heart desires.

That said, a couple things-

1. We're loosening the rules a little bit- topics need not be related to Fairbanks specifically, but they must pertain to (at the bare minimum) Alaska. National politics has no place here.

2. We'll be monitoring this thread much closer than we do anything else. Civility will be enforced at the point of the ever-pleasant mod shaped ban-hammer. Please be excellent to each other, so that your friendly neighborhood unpaid mod staff don't have to be dicks to you.

3. Reports that are only because you don't agree with somebody else's viewpoint are going to be ignored.

Whatup FBX. Inviting all 21+music lovers. We, 3 vinyl DJs are playing at the UAF pub tomorrow night 8PM-Midnight. . It hasn’t been easy, but def worth the struggle. It’ll be the last vinyl gig of the year. All 3 are KSUA affiliates. Lionel Itchy has a Thursday 6PM “Adventures in Sound” show. He will be on 10PM, playing breaks and scratching it up. DJ Exoskeleton has a 10 year running vinyl only show, Sundays at 11AM titled “ The Metamorphosis”. Exo will be doing a conscience hip hop set. Mr Jam will be opening 8PM with soul/ reggae, then closing out at 11PM with Afro/latin funk/. I just want to boogie with yall! There is admission/ but please come get down and jam with us!

We don’t often think of Cook Inlet gas as a state-supported energy resource. That’s because private companies produce the basin’s oil and gas. However, the State of Alaska has consistently helped keep that resource flowing through cashable tax credits, favorable production tax treatment, royalty relief and public financing.

This support amounts to no small potatoes. The Department of Revenue reported Alaska paid $1.3 billion in cash to purchase tax credits for “non-North-Slope oil and gas activities” through 2021.                   

The Interior used to share in the benefits of these state investments through economy power purchases sent up the intertie. But with gas now scarce, the spigot to Fairbanks has been cut off. Southcentral utilities are understandably putting their own customers first. That is their responsibility. But an understandable outcome is not necessarily an equitable one, given the public investments that helped make those resources available. 

I have had pet rats before and I love them, they are like little dogs! Me and my wife are looking to adopt an albino rat (since apparently only albino ones are legal here) if anyone could point us in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it!

Seems like no matter what road you’re on, there is someone going 20 miles under the speed limit. Seems more than in past years. I get you need to go slower in snow and ice, but those slow speeds are causing more danger.

Early voting will also be available Oct. 24 and Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Oct. 25 and Nov. 1 from noon to 4 p.m."

Anybody know of places that do karaoke on weeknights? Ideally on Tuesday/Wednesday?

Hey there, I moved here recently in August from the lower 48 to start a grad program at UAF but I've been having some trouble building a new social circle up here. My cohort's nice and friendly and all but we're friendly more on the order of respected peers and classmates than friends outside the classroom. Are there any kind of social clubs or activities that are good places to meet new people around town? I tried some of the clubs on campus but they either meet infrequently or are very freshman-heavy for obvious reasons.

After a recent trip to Costco on a Saturday I thought I might share a few tips to help people understand how to behave in grocery stores, since apparently everyone has lost the ability to think about anyone but themselves.

1. If you need to stop and think about something or look around for a moment, step off to the side! Do not stop in the middle of a walking path or aisle with people behind you. Just move to the side and then you can look around all you want.

2. Do not leave your cart in the middle of the aisle while you walk away looking for things. Do not leave your cart in the middle of a walking path for any reason. Push it to the side.

3. Do not walk 4 people abreast and expect everyone else to move out of your way. It is a shared space. If you have your entire family walking side by side down an isle or a main corridor, you're an asshole.

4. Do not stop in the middle of an aisle or walking path and catch up with your friends. MOVE TO THE SIDE out of other people's way!

5. Not everyone is out for a Sunday stroll in the park to enjoy scenery.. Walking at a snails pace is fine, but stay off to the side so other people can go around you.

6. As you're walking out the doors, the time to stop and find your keys or check your receipt is NOT while you're in the doorway! MOVE. TO. THE. SIDE.

7. PUT. YOUR. CART. WHERE. THEY. BELONG. Leaving your cart in an adjacent parking spot is the epitome of narcissism. Stop being lazy. Stop thinking that it's someone else's problem.
