Commonly asked questions - check here before making a question post

If you have a question about the Municipality of Anchorage someone else probably had the same or similar question in the past.

Please use the search function to look through the past question posts before making a post or comment. Many helpful users here have already given great in depth responses to many common questions. If you have a specific question after looking over the previous posts, feel free to post your question here in this thread or make a new post.

Low effort posts that clearly haven't looked through past submissions or can be easily answered by a quick internet search may be removed, a good way to avoid that would be to specify in your post that you have already looked over the sticky and searched online.

Below is a list of direct links to some commonly asked questions. However, even if you do not see your question on the list please take a moment to search before posting. When searching or when using one of the links below you can also change the sort function from top to new to see more recent posts.

Please be kind to people, the search function of reddit is far from perfect. Tourism is valuable to our city and at one point all of us were new to the city or had questions about local services and businesses.

We took a community poll on this rule a year after implementation. Here is a link to the poll and the feedback the community gave.

Random paper I found about trading card sales at AK Walmart’s. Kinda interesting how Anchorage stores compare to rest of the state in sales.

Lonely dudes club?

I used to really like the military. It was a natural transition after college. A beautiful way to spend one’s 20s. Now that I’m in a leadership role, with no friends, and no real colleagues (in my very niche career field), I have no idea what to do with myself.

🦠DELTA DAVE 🦠 Dave Bronson Accuses Democrats of Scuttling Homeless Navigation Center to Keep Repub From "Getting a Win"

This is the first time I've listened to an interview with Bronson. I'm a socialist and do not agree with his libertarian policies. But he sounded very genuine in wanting to tackle the issue of homelessness using ideas that have worked for cities. When he was mayor, a homeless navigation center project was greenlit, engineering and design were completed, and concrete was already being poured. This was done without the approval of the assembly and rightly stirred a shit storm:

https://alaskapublic.org/2023/06/20/anchorage-assembly-delays-vote-on-putting-11m-towards-homeless-navigation-center/

and ended up being an expensive failure:

https://alaskapublic.org/2023/06/16/anchorage-taxpayers-will-pay-full-bill-for-homeless-shelter-contracting-failure/

He says that it was killed in a shameless partisan way "so that a Republican didn't get the win." If this wasn't the case, why was this cancelled? Why haven't we been able to centralize services at one navigation center and why is the scattered/piece meal approach (that obviously isn't working) still being pushed? What was wrong with the $15/million pricetag when we are spending $9 million/year just to keep a small part of the population in hotels?

I understand we won't be building studio apartments for the homeless anytime soon, but getting them out of the camps in the woods should be our top priority. The time for stupid partisan politics is over and everything that has been done in the past in this toxic political environment has failed. In before anyone posts Ds/Rs are evil. You are a brainwashed idiot who has no interest in actually solving this problem and your opinion adds nothing to the discussion!

edit: wow, what a braindead thread. Thank you to all who added new information and addressed the issues.

Alaska Club Issue or AIO?

So I am a little taken aback by Alaska Club. We were never asked if we were married, but we were open and upfront about being married partners, specifically stating during the membership sign-up that my husband and I were looking to sign up. I did notice the membership consultant skimmed over the married part of the application as he was scrolling through it (I figured it didn't matter since we were applying for a couples program), and he didn't bother asking to confirm whether we were or were not. He was by no means rude or anything, but the situation was very much preventable.

Imagine our surprise, after more than a week, when my husband inquired about our membership cards and was told that our application was 1) placed on hold because we had to sign an affidavit for an unmarried couple's application, 2) there's nothing they can do because the application was processed (like what? I thought it was on hold?), and 3) if we didn't want to sign the affidavit, we had to send a copy of our marriage certificate? (We were told it was too late to change the application, and we needed proof we married AFTER THE FACT?) If the application was processed erroneously and then placed on hold for processing, why would they not correct the sales consultant's mistake instead of requesting a gay married couple to furnish proof of marriage by asking for a marriage certificate when this was not a requirement when we signed up for it, and I assume not a requirement for any heterosexual identifying marriages? Also, who in the world brings a marriage certificate to the club, let alone a gym?

AIO? Has anyone signed up and was asked to provide a marriage certificate as proof of marriage? I sent an email to accounting last week and it's been crickets. Has anyone had issues with how they handle things?

UPDATE 10/27 Alaska Club did process the contract the same day they asked for our marriage certificate, weird, and we are locked in. Thanks to the manager at the South location someone from their accounting department finally responded and apologized. Basically saying "my bad I'll see to it that we will address it". We will stick with them until the contact is over and then go from there. Unfortunately, it was the only place that we knew that had a gym, a pool, sauna, steam room, hot tub, fitness classes nd other small things we liked. Thank you all for some recommendations and confirming that I was not overreacting to the situation. Hopefully it's the only "weird" situation we will face here.
