Hi I've got a question about emotions and shadow work!
In western chakra traditions, by anodea Judith and Carl jung, the emotional shadows correlate like so:
- root chakra fear
- sacral guilt
- solar shame
- heart grief
- throat lies
- third eye illusion
- crown attachment
I'm wondering if it could be argued that each of these emotions are based in fear but express in the way of the chakra. The Shadow parts of ourselves are suppressed, avoided, repulsed, etc so these Shadow emotions are from othering parts of ourselves, is that out of fear ultimately?
Root deals with stability of survival and sustenance of life, awareness, conscious mind, and connection to the body and material world.
Sacral deals with emotional flow, sexuality and creative force of the mind into the material, desire for material and psychic pleasures, subconscious mind
Solar deals with confidence, self image, ego, status, attachment, and the first of the superconscious mind.
Heart deals with connection to the humanity and soul of others, love of others before self, service, gratitude, forgiveness, circulation and shared energy, compassion and care.
Throat deals with pure expression of energy, communication, creating space for others' expression, articulation of the mind and heart, nobility and freedom.
Third eye deals with insight from experience, clarity of knowledge and recall, bias and the mind's filter, understanding of experience.
Crown deals with spiritual connection, spontaneous knowledge, unity with the universe, acceptance and liberation from the mind and material leaving only the spirit.
I personally feel all my chakras are imbalanced and exhibit each of these emotions especially guilt surrounding pleasure, shame surrounding my (the ego's) self image, and grief surrounding loss. I'm trying to write and discover the persinality of a character with imbalances in all chakras that undergoes assisted shadow work in a manifested psychescape of her own energy to integrate the shadows, and discover and liberate herself from a spiritual parasite that gave her trauma in childhood and influenced her energy expressions to take over her body.
Also to note, in ananda marga yoga tradition there are vrittis, propensities, fluctuations of subtle energy that are basically behaviors of the chakras that are usually bad but point to the chakras as having imbalance, displayed as the petals in chakra yantra/symbols. For example in sacral, the vrittis are cruelty, pleasure seeking tendency, indifference, mental stupor, suspicion, and fear of annihilation until one tempers their reptile mind to achieve pleasure without those selfish behaviors and thus not needing to feel guilty for pleasure. There are several to thousands of vritti of each chakra but the 50 petals are the main ones that combine and filter to become others.
It seems the correlation between the shadow emotion and vrittis is that they can cause one another. The Shadow is the emotion and the vritti is the behavior?
- Do you think that these Shadow emotions inherently come from the suppression or dissociation from the qualities of these chakras? Are they expressions of fear surrounding these qualities? Do you have any nuance, guidance, or corrections to add?
