Kit Pic All dressed up with mics and a new cymbal

Post image
• Upvotes

Recently got this kit back from my parent’s house after 17 years in storage (now that I have space to put it). Pearl MMX 6-piece kit with an MRX bass drum. All in piano black except the snare which is in natural. Sometimes I do switch out the snare for my Chad Smith snare once in a while. Cymbals are all Zildjian A Custom (16 Projection crash, 10 splash, 20 Ping ride) except the 18 inch crash which is a K Sweet with brilliant finish. Microphones include Shure Beta 52 and 56 for kick and snare, SM-57s for the toms, and Behringer C-2s for the overheads. I have an AKG P220 for an optional room mic that I will start experimenting with soon. Just love looking at this thing even when I can’t play due to sleeping newborn/toddler. My skills are a shadow of what they used to be back when I played every day but hopefully with some time I’ll be worthy of this kit.

Discussion Double bass drumming frustrations

Hi all,

Drummer of 20+ years here who recently started delving into the wonderful world of double-bass drumming. I'm starting to get a little frustrated with my legs "freezing up" during consistent 16th/32nd note runs... It's like my hip flexors just give out.

I think the most ironic part is that I can hit fast BPMs (190+) with no problem using my ankle technique. It's these mid tempos (130-170ish) where I just can't for the life of me get consistent runs without my legs giving out.

My question to you all is, do you recommend I look into other techniques, such as heel-toe? Is there a practice routine that can help me get past this plateau? I see videos of drummers doing single strokes at these mid tempos and I'm just wondering HOW!?

Obviously practice is the #1 answer, but I need to make sure I'm practicing correctly. Any tips/video recommendations would greatly help!

Hey guys,

Ive been drumming for about 2 months now and i was looking for any advice about my form.

Everyday i do around 30min on the practice pad.

I do 20x 1st and 2nd exercises of stick Control using 90 bpms with 8th notes.

Then i do Dimitri Fantini speed exercises at 80BPM.

What do you guys think i should improve in my form?

Last time I posted here, everyone said I should add another drum, and an 8” Yamaha stage custom popped up for $80, so I grabbed it! I’m still trying to decide if I want to cut out the bottom heads to do the concert tom thing, or if I like them as-is. Sizes are 8/10/12/13/14/16/18/22/24 plus the two snares, a 14x5.5 Dynasonic and a 14x6.5 Gretsch birch. I’m still working on getting mics on it, I don’t have nearly enough clips and stands for all these toms!

I had a saved search alert on Reverb, and this popped up, and I snagged it almost immediately. $220 and free shipping. I spent an hour cleaning up the cellophane tape around the hole and the tags. Sounds incredible. Don’t let your dreams be dreams.

Was buying this 20” thin crash and happened to see this 18” crash Avedis reissue. Safe to say I bought both. Check your local shops. You never know what gems you can find.

I am all for competition and can only see this as a net good for drummers, however seeing these two talk about this product as if it’s the first of its kind in the market was just dumbfounding to watch.

Killing time this morning I walked into the local music shop and asked if they had any used cymbals and they sold me this. It has a very nice sound. I didn’t know these were a thing. Any knowledge about Armand from this group would be very appreciated.

Question Footblaster kick pad hit surfaces

• Upvotes

Wondering if anyone can share their experiences with the Footblaster kick pad. It says it includes a #6 hit surface, which they describe as "average feeling." Is that sufficient for 250bpm heel toe, or should I drop the extra 50 bucks on the #1 hit surface?

If your RH is hammering off beats is it still RH lead? Cause it don’t feel like it.

Going thru summer footage at the moment.

Feedback Wanted Homemade Kick Cahoon - made from 3/4 and 1/8th inch plywood.

This is my homemade kick cahoon. I made it with 3/4 inch and 1/8th inch plywood. I have inlaid stained glass with 1/8 inch plywood appliques to make the shapes and letters pop more. I also put a strobe that fires on the beat inside the drum, so it flashes various colors on my kick. What do you think about it? Thanks.

Discussion Non-Technical Drum Performances That Are Hard To Emulate

This year I decided to finally start dusting off my electric kit that's in the basement. And honestly, I kick myself for not doing this so much sooner! I am a multi-instrumentalist (piano, guitar, bass, percussion) and I had forgotten how much pure joy it is to play drums. I've been working on my chops by mixing technical exercises with just having fun jamming along with songs I love. The practice has paid off and I have definitely seen improvement on my technique. I find it easier to do songs that require some speed and precision, but kind of lacking in groove. What I'm finding challenging but fun now is trying to play along with songs that are non-technically demanding, but it's tougher than it sounds to get the feel right. In my case, some examples would be:

  • "Don't Get Me Wrong" - The Pretenders
  • "19th Nervous Breakdown" - The Rolling Stones
  • "It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)" - The Rolling Stones
  • "Semi-Charmed Life" - Third Eye Blind (getting that bouncy feel for me is harder than it sounds)

I could have listed a thousand Stones examples actually. Charlie Watts is, for me, such an idiosyncratic player, and so essential to the sound of The Stones. Getting the finesse and dynamics right (he's a pretty laid-back drummer) is tough for a dude like me who loves just beating the shit out of the drums! What are some examples of songs or players that are not technically demanding, but hard to copy for you?

First Kit HELP! Gear4Music Mesh Heads

• Upvotes

I’ve just bought my first kit and need to buy mesh heads due to having neighbours with young children. I don’t have much money to spend on heads so I looked at the Gear4Music ones on their website as well as the Remo SilentStrokes. Would the Gear4Music heads sound anywhere near as good as the Remo ones?

Help Playing got rusty

So recently I just got back from not being able to drum for about a year and my playing is really rusty. I was able to use a practice pad sometimes but not nearly as much as I wouldve liked so my playing is just bad now compared to last year, any advice for getting back up to snuff?
