Announcement EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: Negative comments criticizing a creator's use of AI assistance in their project will be removed

Recently, r/DragonQuest has seen a huge uptick in negative comments, such as calling projects "AI slop" whenever the creator mentions that AI assistance was used in some way. Going forward, negative comments that do nothing but attempt to derail project posts over their use of AI assistance will be removed for trolling (Rule 1). Repetitive abuse or mockery of this decision may result in a temporary ban.

While community feedback is vital, users should focus on constructive criticism of the quality and substance of the work rather than blind hostility and toxicity toward the creator. Many creators leverage AI to handle repetitive bottlenecks, allowing them to achieve milestones that would otherwise take years or be impossible. A prime example of beneficial AI assistance is the decompilation of games back into human-readable source code which can then be modified and natively ported to other platforms. It can also speed up translation projects that might otherwise never be completed.

We will be monitoring this situation closely as we move ahead and we will determine if a minimum level of quality will become necessary so that we're not overwhelmed with low quality projects. At this point, we're not there yet but there is definitely an uptick in releases.

To be absolutely clear: AI-generated artwork is still not allowed. Because AI artwork requires zero manual effort to generate in mere seconds, it can easily overwhelm a subreddit, drowning out genuine community created art.

Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !

Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!

We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index

Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"

So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)

This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.

Thank you and have fun questing!

General Which of the mobile DQ games should I buy? (Picture sorta related)

Throughout the many games I have played, sentinel of the start skies is my absolute favorite game. Unfortunately I can't play it, even though I have the cartridge my two 2Ds broke years ago. And they haven't published it on anything else so I can't play it. Nor do I trust sketchy sites for emulations, nor do I care for getting in legal trouble.

So my best option is to find a new dragon guest. Which of the mobile games has the most gameplay and quality?

Dragon Quest IX Grand Lizzier beaten solo

Post image

The videos are going to be coming out a fair bit faster for the next few bosses because all of my grinding is pretty much done until I get to the final dungeon wherein I’ll unlock the last class available before postgame.

This boss was a very easy due to how much setup I’ve done. And realistically, this is how the Tyrantula fight should have gone as well. By using Buff to negate the Defense drop of Double Up and tacking on Funereal Fource, you can see that my damage sky rocketed. Blind Man’s Biff from the Gladiator unique skill tree Guts also has a really good damage multiplier and while it does have the downside of not being able to pick your target, that’s completely negated in all but one boss fight.

Now, one might think Frost Fource would be better than Funereal Fource, given Ice on a fire breathing Dragon based monster makes sense, and you’d be right that Ice has a 1.25x damage multiplier. It’s just Dark element attacks have a 1.5x damage multiplier against the Grand Lizzier, and even though Earth element attacks have a .5x damage multiplier, the game picks the better element to use when an attack uses multiple elements such as Funereal Fource.

Not much else to say other than that, so up next is Larstastnaras. I hope I spelled that correctly, going purely off memory as is evident by the fact I misspelled “Lizzier” in my last video.

Dragon Quest VII Finally unlocked class changing after ~27 hours

Post image

Posted a few weeks back about reaching the first encounter after 3ish hours. Unlocking classes felt like another milestone, clock is a little over 27 hours which is pretty nuts. Comparing that to where I'd be in something like ff9 is comical. Would've probably broken the 30 hour barrier if I didn't look up a few spots I was stuck at.

Not sure if there are any other big changes but im glad to finally get more abilties/magic lol.

Hard to get time to play with little kids but I'm trying to keep at it which is hard with a game like this. I keep a ton of notes in an excel doc to remember what I was doing / found so far.

The whole Dharma bit caught me by surprise. It's like they hate the player. Other than the intro it was probably the longest island segment so far.

So fought the chump at lav 16,15&12 and still got BODIED! Sleep never worked and just magic attack was doing 53 AOE. So I died, lost half my money. Decided to save and go after him again except he’s not there and now I’ve saved over the game. Am I hosed?

Dragon Quest VII Dragon Quest 7 Thorn Whip PSX Version

I have recently started playing the PSX version of DQ7, and I before I spent hours trying to obtain one, I just wanted to double check: is the thorn whip obtainable from the Cactibal enemies?

The wiki says it is a 1/256 chance, but I wanted to be sure it was correct before dedicating time to grinding.

I really love the Fun size forge. It’s simple but fun, makes me think a little bit, and feels really satisfying every time I get a piece of gear to +3.

Dragon Quest IX The Tyrantula has been defeated

Post image
75 Upvotes

Sorry for the long delay between the last video and this one. I was doing a lot of level grinding across all classes on Metal Medleys this time which are significantly harder to kill that Metal Slimes. However, it was evidently necessary as the boss almost stunlocked me to death.

The Tyrantula is normally a relatively easy boss to fight due to having access to the aforementioned Metal Medleys to grind your whole party up to like mid/late 20s, and the fact that her Sticky Web move only hits one target. And that’s the problem; I’m on my own. So that Sticky Web move causing me to almost guaranteed lose my next turn in tandem with Venomissile ignoring my Defense and going straight for my Resilience meant the fight was a lot scarier than I thought it would be.

The main goal was to try and set up the Buff spell to increase my Defense stat, then use Funereal Fource for the ~1.3x damage modifier, and top it off with Double Up which would return my Defense to neutral (hence why I used Buff) and give me the two upgrade stages to my Attack. This didn’t work because the boss kept stunning me and wasting so many of my buff turns.

Now some of you might be wondering why I started at like half Max MP, and that’s because I encountered 4 Metal Medleys on the way to fight the boss and wanted to kill them for their exp.

Up next is the Grand Lizier.

General My Foray Into Dragon Quest

Post image
48 Upvotes

For years I've been a passive Dragon Quest fan. I've always known about the series, admired its legacy, and appreciated the role it has played in shaping JRPGs. But for one reason or another I never took the plunge and truly immersed myself in the countless adventures that make up this beloved franchise. That finally changed this year.

At the age of 35 I decided it was time to stop admiring Dragon Quest from a distance and actually experience it for myself. I'd played Dragon Quest XI in bits and pieces over the years, but I hadn't committed to exploring the series as a whole. More recently, I worked my way through the remakes of Dragon Quest I–III, getting a taste of the series' roots and seeing how its foundations helped establish so many of the conventions we associate with JRPGs today. Then came Dragon Quest V.

As of yesterday, I've officially completed the DS remake, and I can confidently say that something has clicked and it may have become one of my favorite games of all time. There's a special kind of magic to this series that I don't think I fully appreciated until now. The charm, the music, the monsters, the sense of adventure, and the simple joy of setting off into a world full of possibilities have all come together in a way that has completely won me over.

What I love most is that Dragon Quest doesn't feel like a series I'm simply playing to catch up on gaming history. It feels like discovering something wonderful that was waiting for me all along. There's something comforting about its familiar traditions, yet each adventure has its own personality and memorable moments that make the journey worthwhile.

I'm currently working my way through the series on the Nintendo 3DS, with plenty of adventures still ahead of me. Rather than feeling overwhelmed by how much I've missed, I'm genuinely excited to experience these games for the first time. I get to discover the stories, meet the characters, encounter the monsters, and form my own memories without having already experienced everything years ago.

It's a funny thing to fall in love with a series at 35 that has been around for so much of your life. But sometimes the right time to discover something isn't when everyone else is talking about it. Sometimes, it's when you finally decide to give it a chance.

I may have spent years as a passive Dragon Quest fan but that's no longer the case. I've fallen absolutely in love with this series, and I have a feeling this is the beginning of a very long adventure.

I just watched the entire 4.5-hour review of Dragon Quest VII. It's massive and so well put together, and it gives me renewed appreciation for the PlayStation original and reinforces my belief that there is no definitive version. Highly recommended!

Dragon Quest IX Do I need to save my Skill Points in DQ9?

Starting Dragon Quest 9 and I'd really like to complete it. Should I save my Skill Points on my party members/Hero until I know what I want my build to be?

Mainly just concerned about spending a lot of skill points in something I shouldn't be on my Hero, and then being out of luck and having to deal with with a bad build on my Hero for the rest of my play through (which is going to be a long one)

Any input would be nice, I'm new to this game!
