Grandma Buggins - Blackwater, Surrey

On my recent travels I passed through Blackwater in Surrey where there are two shops and a van all nearby. I'd already bought this one when I spotted the van that I previously posted. I'll be sampling the other shop in a few months time when I'm gigging round that way again.

I popped into the interestingly named Grandma Buggins to sample their wares, as recommended by one of the crowd at the venue.

Here we have my usual; lamb doner wrap, chili sauce and no salad. I'm noticing that more and more people are getting upset at the lack of salad. It's reminding me of the brain slugs in Futurama. Once again, I digress...

This wrap was prepared with ninja-like stealth. I saw Bossman and his team of underbosses all very busy then one appeared with my wrap. Nobody approached the spit or the Bain marie beside it. There must be another Bain marie to the side. I didn't see the application of the sauce either.

Well, after feeling this to be a little on the light side, that's why I decided to eat the other and save this one. This was reheated in the morning at 180° for 25 minutes. Served up when it measured 75° in the middle.

The verdict... the chili sauce was bottled. I could taste that it was a standard, bottled synthetic kinda thing. It wasn't one of those oversweet jobs though. Meat was standard, not too greasy. You can see that it was little, shredded slices. Overall this gets a B grade. It wasn't bad but nothing special. Dönerdog liked it.

Weighing in under average at 430g and priced ever so slightly above average at £8.25, this has landed on the spreadsheet at 63/95. Not great. I probably won't go back with the Ozzy van nearby.

Popped into here on my way home from an early Sunday gig. Always nice to add a new place to the spreadsheet.

Here we have my usual; lamb doner wrap, chili sauce and no salad. I didn't want cold veg on my hot food, plus it upsets the salad Nazis so it's a win/win. You do you.

Tortilla wrap was heated on the hot plate while Bossman was stirring his meat pot. Heheh, that sounds rude. Obviously, with it being around 8 on a Sunday night, he wasn't expecting a mass influx of customers. We had a nice chat about business and how it's close to the end of the month so fewer people are out. Anyway, I digress...

Bossman spread a nice portion of meat all over and then added a good few spoonfuls of his homemade chili sauce. He wrapped that bad boy up and also let me pick a can to have on the house. Cheers Bossman! For info, I got a Pepsi Max.

I felt the weight when he handed it to me, grinned and thanked him again. I could tell this was a thicc boi, which was great after the previous night's kiddy portion.

The verdict... chili sauce was flavoursome with a bit of heat. I give an A for the sauce but a B overall. It was regular doner, decent. Weighing in at a very respectable 646g, yet costing a below average £8, this has landed on the spreadsheet in 7th place! Yup, this is 7/95. Very impressive.

Safe to say that I'll be using him again. I'll probably ask if he could fry some onions on the hot plate next time too.

Homemade 🥙 Homemade Mixed Kebab

This was just beautiful. Homemade picked red cabbage made the day before, fresh chicken breast cut into chicken chunks and marinated in Colman's Chicken Kebab seasoning and pan fried. Fresh Iceberg lettuce and red onion. The Doner meat was purchased from Iceland. The standard version. Finished off with Heinz Turkish Garlic sauce (put on after the photo was taken). Honestly, it was better than some takeaways. The homemade pickled red cabbage took centre stage with this meal. Unreal!

Brothers Kebab - Gosport

For those who don't know the backstory, I'm a musician who plays a lot across the south. I love a kebab at the end of the night after a gig.

Returned to Gosport for another gig last night. I had been recommended two places to try and this one was closer to the venue.
Here we have my usual; lamb doner wrap, chili sauce, no salad. That's what I like. That's why I buy it.

Standard tortilla wrap heated on the grill. Meat was served from the bain marie, as happens a lot at late night places. Chili sauce was homemade and decent. Bossman poured on one ladle which was just enough for the quantity of meat.

Overall this gets a B grade. It was decent enough but small. It was slightly greasy, as is the norm from bain marie kebabs but I've had way, way worse. It was demolished fairly quickly.

So, the tale of the tape... priced below average at £7.50, but weighing in at a disappointing 342g, this has landed on the spreadsheet at 66/93.

It's the lowest rated place of the four I've tried in Gosport. I won't be going back. I've got another place in Gosport to try, but I won't be back there until March. Got a few trips to Fareham left this year plus three new venues to find a nearby place. Sixteen gigs left this year, plenty of opportunity to try new places. 👍

Question ❔ Iskender Kebab or Lamb Gryo?

There's a Turkish restaurant near me, and I'm choosing between the Iskender Kebab or Lamb Gryo. I am a big fan of gyros and have fixed many myself. I never have had an Iskender Kebab so I don't know what to expect. Should I stick with what I know or try the Iskender Kebab, or is it a really niche dish that will taste vastly different from a Gyro?

Iceland Grill House Spicy Doner Kebab Meat... plus Dönerdog

Finally, my third buy of the 3 for £10 kebab meat offer from Iceland. Regular visitors will have seen my reviews of the Battered Meat (tasty) and the Pepper X (emotional) so here's the last one I picked up.

I was gonna do this in the air fryer but mine has just died! Gutted, but it's been over four years and gets used almost every day so can't complain. I'll have to nip to Costco and buy another but I digress...

Popped this onto an oven tray with a baking sheet and stuck in for about 15 minutes at 180°, turning halfway through. Pulled it out before it totally dried out and got too crispy. I had a mix of soft and crispy bits which was ideal for me. Of course, I had the whole bag. There was some nonsense on there about "two servings."

Served up on a standard tortilla with my mate's homemade chili sauce. This is pretty decent. I'm not sure if the spice level was down to the meat or just the sauce, but it all worked nicely together. Compared to the frozen kebab meat I've had in the past, this is much nicer. I'd probably get this again. The battered stuff has been my favourite because it's pure filth. 😋👍

Dönerdog was a very big fan of this. He liked it a lot.

San2 - Hounslow (plus Dönerdog)

Played in Hounslow last night which meant I was absolutely, definitely going to be visiting San2 for my post gig kebab. I've been a regular here for years. There's been a recent change to the doner meat. It used to be red but now, it's brown. It still has tandoori spices though so that's cool.
Here we have my usual, doner wrap, chili sauce, no salad. I know this upsets people, which makes me like it even more.
Unfortunately, they use a bottled chili sauce. However, this isn't standard doner, it's tandoori flavoured and the sauce actually works with it.
This is a decent portion and overall I give it an A grade. It's bloody delicious, that's why I go back again and again.
Weighing in at a very decent 533g for just £7, this is on the spreadsheet at 8/92. Safe to say that I will definitely be back. It's a shame for the other places in Hounslow because since discovering San2, formerly Santos, I rarely go anywhere else.
I'll be returning to Hounslow in December. Bet you can't guess where I'll be going?
Oh, I also bought another wrap for breakfast! Fan oven, 180° for 25 minutes. Check with a meat thermometer for 75° and you're all good. Dönerdog approves of this. He's a good boy.

Didn't take any better photos of the meat as I was too busy eating it, but it was a large chicken doner with a homemade bread that they toasted on top of a bunch of shish that was cooking at the time...

Then they basted the bread in doner fat inside before putting it face down on the grill. It was like watching someone compose an orchestra. I feel like Bossman really sorted me out!

Chicken and lamb donner wrap from Chiquitos in Loughborough

.

Picked this up from Chiquitos in Loughborough. Weighed it when I got home and it came in at just over half a kilo.

Decent amount of chicken and lamb donner, with some salad and sauce, all wrapped up in a soft flatbread. The meat was nicely seasoned, still warm and surprisingly juicy by the time I got home.

Cut it in half to see what was inside and there's a pretty generous amount of meat throughout. The bread held together well too, despite how much was packed into it.

Not a bad effort for a cheapish takeaway wrap, especially considering the size of it.
