News [Granger/Baugh] Connor Hellebuyck gets Olympic flashback with Jack Hughes’ lost tooth: ‘Gotta stop doing that’

Thumbnail
nytimes.com
86 Upvotes

The last time Jack Hughes played in front of Connor Hellebuyck, back in February at the Winter Olympics, he had his teeth knocked out by a high stick, returned to score a goal and helped his team win.

Eight months later, in Hellebuyck’s debut for the New Jersey Devils, Hughes repeated the feat. Unfortunately for him, every last bit of it.

In the first period of Tuesday’s game in Dallas, Hughes was hit in the face by a high stick from Stars forward Justin Hryckowian as he absorbed a big hit from New Jersey’s Jesper Bratt. Hughes fell to the ice and appeared to spit his teeth out before heading to the dressing room.

Hughes returned shortly after wearing a face shield and scored the Devils’ final goal of the night in the third period to extend the lead to 5-1 and seal the victory. Hellebuyck stopped 17 of 18 shots in an impressive debut with his new team.

Devils facing statistical gauntlet tomorrow in Denver

TL;DR: Colorado is 20-5 against rested road teams arriving in Denver on the second half of a back-to-back. The Devils are walking directly into that scenario tomorrow.

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole after tonight’s win.

Initially, I was curious about whether the Devils would fly tonight, or stay overnight in Dallas and travel the next morning. The answer seems to be that they almost certainly fly tonight. That got me thinking about the other obvious wrinkle here — Denver (or more specifically, Denver’s altitude).

The altitude thing has obviously been discussed before, but I started wondering whether it matters more on the second half of a back-to-back. Guys who played 18-22 minutes the previous night, getting on a plane around midnight, crossing a time zone, getting crap sleep in a hotel, and then jumping back into game action at 5,200 feet seems like a much different proposition.

So I started looking at how teams have actually performed in this exact situation.

I researched back through the 2014-15 through 2025-26 seasons (excluding the  2020-21 COVID year). I looked specifically for games where the visiting team had played on the road the night before, traveled to Denver, and then faced an Avs team that had at least one day of rest. I also excluded games where Colorado itself was on the second half of a back-to-back. In other words, basically the situation the Devils are in right now.

The results? There were 25 games. Colorado went 20-5.

Even more striking: the Avs outscored those teams 108-51. That works out to an average score of roughly 4.3-2.0.

Now, this obviously isn’t proof that altitude turns teams into pumpkins. The Avs have been a world class team for much of the past 10 years, and there’s already an obvious disadvantage when playing the second half of a road back-to-back. (I looked it up, and on average, a rested home team facing a road team on zero days’ rest wins roughly 59% of the time). Making very rough adjustments for how good Colorado itself has been during these seasons, you’d probably expect the Avalanche to win something like 65-66% of these games anyway. But instead they’ve won 80%.

This isn’t a rigorous statistical analysis, and I don’t think it “proves” anything, but it’s nonetheless eye-opening. Even beyond the win %, the goal differential of +57 in just 25 games is nuts. That’s +2.28 goals per game; for comparison, the normal advantage for a rested NHL home team facing a road-road back-to-back opponent is only around half a goal per game.

And weirdly, while Colorado is definitely a *really* good home team the past few seasons, when you look across the full 12 years I analyzed, they don’t appear to have some enormous overall home-ice advantage compared with the rest of the league. Their home-vs-road improvement is basically normal. This is what makes me wonder whether the real effect isn’t simply “playing at altitude is hard,” but rather “Altitude + acute fatigue + overnight travel might be an especially bad combination”. If you’ve ever traveled to Denver, that at least passes the common-sense test.

Like everyone else, I’m stoked right now — huge trade last week, 4 game win streak, team was buzzing tonight. But this particular scheduling spot is brutal. So I’m treating tomorrow as a scheduled loss. While I’d be thrilled with stealing a point, I don’t think we should be particularly shocked if Colorado wins by a fairly ugly margin, despite how we’ve been playing lately.

Hopefully, my mini research project is a huge distraction, the Devils prove me wrong, and we keep this wagon rolling. If we do pull out the W tomorrow, let’s just skip the rest of the season, cause we’re winning the Cup. (But if we lose tomorrow, clearly this shit is rigged, back-to-backs are stupid, and the Avs should be forced to move back to Quebec).

LGD.

Season Goals

I was very excited with tonight’s result and got me to thinking what would be a realistic set of goals that you would like to see out of this season. For me it’s:

2 wins against the Canes, Islanders and Caps. I feel like this is a good barometer for how good this team is. Hitting this goal will absolutely thrill me.

I feel as though I’m fixated on seeing this result. Definitely excited to see how the season unfolds. Also hoping to take my little man to his first game. I’m curious to see what other Devils fans want to see out of this season. Thank you guys and Go Devils.

Thank you Sheldon for becoming a good coach instead of a bad one. Everything he does now has been flawless, whereas every decision he made before sucked.

Honestly just been a great performances from him lately. From coaching for his job and having the worst system in the league to having the best process and results in the league. Who would have thought?

Whatever he changed over 4 games most have made the team elite.

Thank you Sheldon for not being an idiot. You are a gem.
