Shaking it up: Benson with Thompson and Helenius, Doan taking his spot with Quinn and Östlund. Ellis draws the start.

• Really liked the forecheck and backcheck today, esp in p2.
• Power - Helenius - Zellweger goal was top notch. Great set up, great speed on the shot. Power's been amazing, and Zelly's quietly been one of our most consistently good players
• Crevier took some dumb fucking penalties but had a good strip in p2
• So much speed, love the aggression through the game. I know not every team is as bad at defense as the Sharks, but I'd love to see more of this kind of offense from the team more often
• PP sucked but PK (yellow orange) showed a lot of promise.
• Doan - Östlund - Quinn line had flashes of momentum but struggled to keep plays together. Would be willing to see them again, esp since Benson - Helenius looked great tonight.
• 4th line looked amazing. Beck Malenstyn YOU are a MACHINE
• ELLIS ISLAND. ENOUGH SAID.

I’ve decided to get into hockey this season, and as a Wisconsin sports fan I don’t have a local team to cheer for but I really respect buffalo fans so I’ve decided to become a Sabres fans. Who’s the best players on this team, what teams/players do we hate, I want to know it all.

Zach Benson, Buffalo Sabres

0 goals in 11 games

With 13 goals in 65 games last season, Benson isn’t the same bona fide scoring threat as other names on this list. But given how much the Sabres are counting on his internal growth to offset key departures (and how much his usage has ticked up as a result), zero goals in 11 games is starting to raise concerns.

In that expanded role, Benson is getting his chances. And unlike his teammate Josh Doan, his slower start isn’t because he has been shooting from farther out; he’s done the opposite, and is driving even closer to the net.

That shot quality adds up to 4.42 expected goals, according to Sportlogiq. And because he hasn’t cashed in on a single one of those chances, his goals below expected is third-worst in the league.

Joel Eriksson Ek, No. 1 on that list, is still producing at a high rate. Jack Hughes, who ranks fourth, is operating at over a point-per-game pace, too.

Benson joins a long list of underperforming Sabres. Only three forwards in Buffalo are on the positive side of the ledger here: Doan, Tage Thompson and Jack Quinn, which makes Benson’s zero goals all the more glaring.

A few things may be contributing to that. Despite challenging goalies from in closer and attempting more shots compared to last year at five-on-five, Benson is actually missing the net more this season. What happens before those shots matters, too.

We cannot be this much worse than last year, this is just silly. This has to be growing pains with new line ups right?

I refuse to believe this is a step backwards after all the hard work we put in.

The goaltending is inconsistent from what I can see, is there an agreement on this flaw or am i focusing on the wrong element?
