Hey, there everyone. Ive been restoring/reviving an abandoned 1950s cabin on my brother property. Its been a long few months but its at the point where im repairng the holes, adding putty, sanding and staining the wood a dark expresso stain. This was a partial stain I did today to see if i would like the color, and I can say with certainty I do. Dark feels right for the age of the wood. But what do you think? This is pur DIY log sauna build that we decided to treat all walls with this angle grinder attachment. Takes forever but the surface you get is smooth and looks to me at least absolutely perfect.

My backwoods cabin will never merit a layout in a magazine, but I feel overwhelmingly blessed to have this lived-in cozy retreat.

Finally have heat! It’s been getting cold now so this was a huge step to get the wood stove in. I also set up a temporary kitchen and can continue the trim work. It’s been a beautiful fall so far!

We are looking to remodel the bathroom in our cabin. It is 3 seasons, unheated in the winter (northern WI) and currently on pier and beam foundation. Currently there is some sort of hard pvc like panels that are used for the walls and ceiling...I'm guessing it is the original from when it was built (1940-1950s). What types of materials should we be using for the new walls and ceiling, considering it is the bathroom and also not heated in winter? Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Starting with the bathroom and was wondering if anyone has any advice?

I have noticed there is a lot of peeling on the walls, not sure if that was from the previous owner? It is mainly by the tub and toilet

Do you think the whole thing should be sanded down and restained?

Is it best to cover the wood, tile for example or keep it exposed but treat it?

There is no fan in the room

We are definitely taking the tub out to inspect the floor underneath and thinking of adding a walk in shower?

Any wisdom or inspiration would be much appreciated!

Curious if anyone has any first hand experience incorporating their family cabin/cottage for future generations? When the family has expanded too much that it requires more oversight and control via a formal corporate structure.

Edit: Guess I’m looking for the diamond in the rough. Personally, I’m a very fortunate and grateful 5th generation member (and shareholder) of a +100 year old summer cottage. We absolutely have our challenges on vision for the future but as a corporation for over 55 years have been able to manage and use the cottage in an equitable way.

However, I do see challenges ahead with regard to ownership and access as imbalance develops amongst the family tree and emotional connection (and interest) wanes amongst some shareholders.

We laid out the living room of our cozy lake cabin to have two distinct spaces, lake-facing and gas fireplace-facing. We are currently a year into this remodel and spent the summer using it almost every weekend. It still needs a lot but it’s coming along nicely. 1965 build. Additions include a block-wall basement, loft with two dormered rooms on either end.

Has anyone tried or thought about a dugout? There have been a number of historical periods in various places around the world where people successfully lived in dugouts. I feel like the biggest reason people aren't living in dugouts today is because of legal restrictions and group think.

Yall give me adviceeeeee. Me and three friends (call them Denise, Charles and Pete) are thinking of buying a piece of land together and building a cabin there with like 4 bedrooms and one living room, an outside fire pit and four chairs.
When one of us is done with our time here, we'll bury the ashes beneath our respective chair and turn our room into a shrine (if that makes sense Imao let a teenage girl dream). After a good amount of time, after we're all gone, we want it to go to another friend group that loves each other as much as we do.

This is my first year owning a 1000sf cabin in Northern MN. The cabin has a boiler heating system with the piping running in the 18” crawlspace with all the domestic piping.

I am debating keeping it open this winter but am concerned the heat piping won’t keep the crawlspace (uninsulated CMU block) above freezing.

Does any one use a monitoring system like CabinPulse? If so how do you like it?

Getting ready to start a new building project on my land soon as a getaway cabin/house. Doing some planning and preliminary due diligence.

First I’m going to get a perc test set up soon so I know what type of septic system I will need and what that cost will be.

Second I think I have narrowed it down to a 30x32 (960 sqft) or 30x40 (1200 sqft) building.

BTW I am in north Texas specifically Lamar County.

Has anyone else done this in the last few years? If so are there any pitfalls or things you would have done differently. I plan to finish it out myself but will hire a company to build the shell.

i only get up to my cabin every couple weeks, and after heavy rain or wind i never know what the driveway is gonna look like until i get there. the last thing i want is to make the whole drive and find the entrance blocked by fallen branches and me not having the proper equipment to clean it up.

ive been thinking about putting a Wyze cam facing the driveway so i can check it from home before heading up. the cabin has wifi so thats not an issue, im just trying to figure out if pointing it down the driveway or back toward the cabin would be more useful.

This is my first year in the cabin. I'm in Colorado at 9,500ft. I plan to winterize the cabin in the next couple of weeks. When I come up this winter can I use the toilet in the cabin as long as I drain it and put antifreeze in it when I leave? Thanks,

Thursday afternoon through Monday morning at the cabin. Got some work done and some relaxing. Prepping old storage area for living room conversion, setting up new shed, graded the driveway, new fire pit/chairs set up

We only get up to the cabin a handful of times in winter so an empty building for months at a time is basically an invitation for mice. Last year we came back in spring to droppings in two of the kitchen drawers and some chewed cardboard in the closet. Planning to do a real cleanout before we lock it up this year and I keep seeing peppermint oil recommended everywhere. Not sure if it holds up over months of nobody checking on it though, since most of what I've read is about active households where someone's redoing it every few days.

I have never seen mice inside but have them outside. Its pretty well sealed. How can I keep the mice out?

I have a Gator. Should I take out the battery? Anything else?

If I wanted to go up in the winter, (keeping water off) would it be an issue?

Got delayed by moose season but progress is still ongoing. Wood stove should be installed next week! Ran out of stain and have some more trim to do. I think the homemade interior doors turned out great!

This cabin could have been bought for $40,000 6 years ago. Now it's sold at $169,000. Damn.
