Tunnel Transformation in Handsworth 🥳

Sorting this tunnel took months, probably close to a hundred emails and a lot of partnership working.

Ashwin Road tunnel in Handsworth connects Grasmere Road to Ashwin Road. Without the tunnel it is probably a 15 minute walk.

Historically the tunnel was used by residents. But more recently we saw lots of dumping, mattresses inside, fires caused which burnt out the lights, drug taking and worse.

Network Rail own the tunnel structure, the Council maintain the path, and the police enforce against the dodgy behaviour.

Working in partnership with Operation Fearless, Birmingham City Council and Network Rail we managed to:

- Clear all the fly tipping and material inside
- Get the right help for the street community using it
- Fix the lighting which had been out for ages

I’m really hoping this is maintained. We want to paint the inside white and put a community mural on the side, too. But all with time.

Anyway, I’m just proud of this - people are really happy with the tunnel and it’s what our local communities deserve: safety, cleanliness and being able to use a tunnel that makes life just a little bit easier 🌹♥️

Looking to meet new people? Come to the r/Brum meet up!

Hi everyone, my name is Karl and after seeing a bunch of posts from people looking to make new friends, I thought we could organise a meet up like they used to back in the day!

I'm going to propose a date of either Saturday 14th or Sunday 15th November, which gives us around a month to organise. I assume a venue in the city centre will be convenient for most...

Please comment which day you prefer and if you have a suggestion or preference for a venue (I'm aware not all cultures like to be around alcohol) or maybe you run/have links to a venue that would host us.

After a couple of weeks for people to see this and weigh in, I'll start to make suitable arrangements!

Sunday Evening Quiz at The Flapper 6pm.

Hey all. Hope you are all well. Just a quick one for you all. As you may have seen I've recently started a new quiz on a Sunday at The Flapper. This will be a Pop Culture(ish) quiz which aims to be different from their Thursday quiz which will still be running. I'm looking to make this bigger and, of course, increase the amount of teams that play. It's £2 per person for the quiz, and starts at 6pm. There are drinks offers going on too and the kitchen is also open. The quiz utilises the screens that are available so you get to see the questions and watch clips. Rounds usually are name the tv show/advert etc, a magic number and other fun rounds. Come along and check it out. Maybe, just maybe form a Reddit team if you fancy it (max 6 people per team). A Sunday evening quiz might be just the start to fight the Monday dread!

Jewellery Quarter/Moseley/Kings Heath/Stirchley for a Dalston/Stoke Newington/hackney type area

Firstly, thanks to everybody who responded to my previous post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/brum/s/ACKxkonFNY

Has been super useful in helping me understand feasibility of my lifestyle plans. Im planning to move in early January, however the last question stands....which part do i move to? I know this question has been answered multiple times i.e. best places in Birmingham to live etc, however I think people's recommendations sometimes seem quite contradictory to one another. So I figured I'd ask you all to compare it to my ideal London area.

Abit about me incase it helps you understand my vibe:
30, single, black, male. Generally work from home/cafes. Will go to London roughly once to twice a week. Don't know anyone in Birmingham so will be looking to get active in music jams, football teams and chess groups etc.

(Im aware that Birmingham is very multicultural, but mentioned my race incase there are any areas that I should avoid if its a factor to consider)

My London benchmark: Dalston / Hackney / Stoke Newington. Young, creative, lots of independent bars, cafes and restaurants. Full of culture i.e. ethiopian food/mexican bars the lot! Busy but in a fun, ever-so slightly grimey, creative kind of way. Not an Oxford Street way if that makes sense.

Im also lazy so when/if I catch a late train back from London, I should be able to get off at a station no more than a 10 min walk to my house.

I would like the area I live in to be bustling but in a clean/fun/creative way, not an oxford street kind of way if that makes sense.

Current shortlist: In my previous post people mentioned Jewellery Quarter, Moseley, Kings Heath and Stirchley - Are those still the top places? Moseley, Kings Heath and Stirchley have no train station, but I've heard such good things I'm seeing if its at all feasible. Anywhere else I should consider (Digbeth, Harborne)?

Cheers Again!!! (See you all in January)

Question Art valuer recommendations?

Seeking a place which will value some limited edition 20th century prints I have inherited.

Those fancy looking high street galleries don't look like they'll do the job... will they?

Where can you buy sushi-grade salmon in Birmingham?

Ideally looking for a large slab of salmon. I would prefer it to be actually sushi-grade, and not just sushi that I need to freeze myself.

44yrs old. Too old to go out gay clubbing solo? Halloween question.

Hi all. I live in cov and used to love going out to Brum gay scene for event nights like Halloween but due to looking after a disabled relative plus a health issue I had re nerve pain issues I stopped going out a decade ago and my friends who I still speak to here and there on Facebook all moved away from cov so I've ended up billy no mates as far as going out is concerned.

I spent the last year getting back into shape and dropped near 20kg after walking 800 miles over 6 months and frankly that plus stopping smoking 18 months ago I'm in better shape than I've been since I was in my early 20s and part of me wants to go out to a night club in Halloween finest fancy dress but another more insecure part says 44 is too old and I should stay home and watch countdown till death arrives and plus I know no one.

I get it's a lack of confidence thing. Just wondering what your thoughts are. Was thinking of nightingales.

No late trains showing from Euston to Birmingham on Wednesday – are they cancelled?

Hi guys,

I need to get a late train from London Euston to Birmingham New Street this coming Wednesday (28 October). I already have an open return ticket.

I understand there is some engineering work that night, but I've checked National Rail, Trainline and Avanti West Coast, and it seems like they aren't selling tickets for the late trains anymore.

Does this mean the trains won't be running, or are they still planning to operate but haven't sold the tickets yet?

Has anyone travelled on this route during similar engineering works? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

18th birthday party

Hi im looking for an 18th birthday party venue that’s not a community church or a shool or anything like that. Id have around 50+ people invited but most of them won’t be 18 so i can’t rent out a pub. I was also looking at airbnbs as a house party but none of them allow it.
my budget would be around £500 and i dont mind the location of it as long as its in brum. If anyone has any places please let me know

Question Where do you get your favourite tea?

I'm interested in where the best places are for tea in Birmingham.

I'm more looking for the actual bags/leaf (whatever type you enjoy: jasmine, hojicha, English breakfast, thai, kashmiri, earl grey) rather than cafes and tea houses, though I'd welcome quality recommendations regardless.

I get my jasmine tea from Wing Yip.

Event Soho road mela was a joke

I wasn’t there too long but the atmosphere was just terrible, the dj and hosts kept trying to build hype but it seemed no one cared or even wanted to be there. I feel sorry for the team that went behind this because I could tell they put a lot of effort into the live show but no one cared tbh. Other than that the food was ok and could see families enjoy the rides that were on display.

Digbeth traffic

What is up with constant traffic in digbeth near HanBao and the Cuban bar. It’s always there at like 3pm and no other time but seems to be there every day!

Also: the traffic light by digbeth coach station I was there for 15 minutes today and it just wouldn’t turn green, I eventually had to just go forward with it staying red. Does this happen often bevause I feel like I’ve been there many times and I was so confused.

Clothes donations for Oxfam- available at M&S Longbridge?

I’ve just found out you can donate unwanted clothes for Oxfam by dropping them off in M and S store. Apparently you get a fiver off later Marks’ purchases.
Does anyone know what the process is within the Longbridge store (or any store if it’s the same across branches)? The Oxfam website guidance is vague- drop the stuff off and get a voucher in return.
